Rise of China has correspondingly seen increased Chinese involvement at global stage and regional levels in different parts of the world. This has attracted claims of strategic competition and rivalry between China and U.S., as China is said to be working towards replacing hitherto U.S. influence. Consequently there have been calls for U.S. to counter increased Chinese involvement to safeguard U.S. influences and interests. This study aims to contribute to this debate by examining the extent to which increased Chinese involvement in Africa has, if any, supplanted U.S. strategic interests in the continent. The study contends that, Chinese involvement in Africa has entailed China creating own niche that does not necessary threaten U.S. interests in the continent as widely portrayed and imagined. This is premised on the fact that, U.S. has historically had relatively minimal strategic interests in Africa as compared to other more strategic parts of the world that China could significantly threaten. Seen in this way, increased Chinese penetration in Africa has not had immediate threats to U.S. core strategic interests, thus explaining U.S. measured response to counter Chinese presence in Africa.

This study aims to explore the significance of homework help service as a library program to support young people in the community and investigate the characteristics of homework help services in U.S. public libraries. It reviews the previous literature on the cases and trend of homework help services in U.S. public libraries. It also investigates the practice and characteristics of homework help services using an email survey targeting public libraries that offer the services. The results are analyzed in terms of the user, collection, space, public relations and human resources of homework help services. This study may contribute to eliciting the service plan on homework help service in its planning and implementation stage in public libraries.

2003년 미국동물병원협회(American Animal Hospital Association, 이하 AAHA)에서는 반려동물병원 경영에 있어서 매우 기념비적인 조사결과를 발표했다. "The Path to High-Quality Care"로 명명된 보고서는 동물병원의 경쟁심화와 수익성 정체로 고민하던 미국 반려동물 수의계에 새로운 희망과 이정표를 제시하였다. 이번 호에서는 상기 보고서의 내용을"최고의 동물병원으로 가는 길"이라는 제목으로 요약, 정리하고 한국 반려동물병원 경영에의 착안사항을 살펴 본다.

이 논문은 최근 들어 국민들의 행복감(happiness)이 어떻게 변화되어 왔는지에 초점을 두고 있다. 최근 연구논문들을 살펴보면, 미국과 영국의 경우 경기침체 등의 영향으로 국민들이 체감하는 행복감 수준이 정체내지는 줄어든 것으로 보고 되고 있다. 미국의 경우 1970년대 이래 최근 들어 여성들이 느끼는 행복감은 가장 큰 폭의 감소세를 보이고 있는 것으로 조사되고 있다. 이러한 행복감 상실의 가장 큰 주된 요인은 경기침체 등에 따른 실업률(unemployment)과 이혼 등에 따른 것으로 알려지고 있다.

'One Book, One City' reading campaign is one of the major reading campaigns, successfully conducted by public libraries in this century. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the significance of 'One Book, One City' reading campaign, as an innovative, continuing, and collective reading campaign by analyzing its growth and diffusion during the past six years. Also, analyzed are the themes. genres, and publication dates of the books and the characteristics of authors selected for 'One Book' in order to understand the cultural, social, and community-wide trend and objectives of 'One Book, One City' reading campaigns. An analysis of lists of 'One Book, One City' Reading Promotions Projects' available from the website of the Library of Congress, the Center for the Books, and bibliographic records of ninety books from LC OPAC, shows the preference for books recently published, significance of biographies and biographical fictions, and focus on the themes which help people better understand a multi-cultural and multi-racial society.

본 연구의 목적은 최근 건설된 노인전용 조합주택으로 입주한 노인가구를 대상으로 거주자 측면에서의 주거환경 평가이며, 아울러 미국 조합주택에 대한 이해를 도모하고자 한다. 설문지를 통해 수집한 자료는 빈도와 백분율 회귀분석을 사용하여 분석하였으며, 총 171가구가 본 조사에 참여하였다. 조사대상 가구주의 평균 연령은 76세였으며 교육 수준은 높았고, 가족형태는 부부나 독남가구가 대다수였다. 조사에 참여한 가구들은 저렴한 주택비용, 안전성, 주택유지 및 관리의 용이성, 주거 내의 접근용이성을 현 주거환경의 선택 동기로 손꼽았다. 현 주거환경의 평가를 물리적 환경, 사회적 환경, 그리고 거주자 참여방식의 관리에 대한 만족도로 크게 3가지로 나뒀으며, 물리적 환경 관련 요소가 주거환경 평가와 관련한 만족도에 가장 중요하게 작용하였다. 본 연구결과는 장기적인 주택관련 비용의 저렴화와 노인의 독립성을 위한 지원성이 강화된 물리적인 환경의 구축이 무엇보다 주거환경 평가시 중요하므로, 향후 노인전용 대안주택 계획시 이점에 대해 고려되어야 할 것이다.

본 연구는 미 L-A에 거주하는 한국이민 노인들의 특성을 파악하고, 그들의 생활만족도에 기여하는 결정요소들이 무엇인지 가려내며, 그 얻어진 결과를, 동일한 시각과 접근으로 시도되었던 미국 노인들에 대한 선행연구들의 결과와 비교 분석하였다. 연구는 1986년 12월에서 1987년 2월까지 3개월간 미 L-A 카운티에서 거주하는 55세 이상의 한국 이민노인 390명을 대상으로 설문지 조사를 실시하여 그중 192명을 자료분석에 사용하였다. 단계별 중다 회귀분석의 결과, 활동성의 제약정도, 결혼상태, 재정적인 안정, 교육정도, 연령증가 등 5가지 변인들의 특별히 한국노인의 생활만족도가 강한 연관성이 있었고, 반면 자신들이 평가한 건강상태, 지인과의 사회적인 상호작용, 미국거주 년한 등은 노후생활의 안녕에 전혀 직접적인 영향력을 행사하지 못했다. 그러나 자신들이 평가하는 건강상태는, 활동성의 제약 등과 같은 다른 변인에 미치는 효과를 통해서 생활만족도에 간접적으로 강하게 영향을 미치고 있었다. 이러한 결과를 선행연구에서 나타난 서구나 미국노인의 생활만족도 결정의 세 요인인 건강상태, 사회경제적 지위, 사회적 활동성과 비교해 볼때, 사회적 활동성과 연령증가 변인에서 서로 상반되는 대조를 보이고 있었다. 즉, 백인노인들은 나이가 듦에 따라 생활만족도가 낮아지거나 혹은, 연령증가와 생활만족도 사이에 별로 유의할 만한 관계를 보이지 않고 있으나, 본 연구에서의 한국노인은 나이를 먹으면서 오히려 생활만족도가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 사회적 활동성은, 백인노인의 생활만족도에 긍정적 혹을 부정적으로 가장 강하게 영향을 미치는 요인중 하나임에 반하여, 한국노인들은 이것이 자신들의 생활만족에 중요한 것이라 믿고는 있었지만 실제 통계학적으로는 영향력을 행사하지 못하는 요인이었다. 주거환경(자식과의 동거여부) 역시, 이제껏 한국사회에서 기대되어왔던 통념과는 달리, 한국노인의 생활만족도에 아무런 영향을 주지 못하고 있었다.

교통의 발달 및 빈번한 문화와 정보의 교류는 옥외 recreation 활동 참여의 다양한 인종적 구성을 가져왔다. 이 연구의 목적은 옥외 recreation 활동의 하나인 스키장에서 이용 밀도에 대한 선호도를 문화·인종간의 혼잡규범적 차이로서 해석하는데 있다. 한국의 용평 스키장과 미국 Hunter Mt. 스키장에서 한국인, 주한 미국인, 미국인, 재미 한인 들을 대상으로 이용밀도에 관한 선호도를 측정하기 위한 설문조사를 실시한 결과, 1,157부의 설문지를 회수하여, 문화·인종간의 차이를 규명하기 위하여 Kruskal-Wallis test 실시하였다. 연구의 결과로서 재미한국인의 이용밀도에 대한 선호도가 동일 인종인 한국인집단보다 사회 문화적으로 공통성이 있는 미국인집단에 더 유사하였으며 그와 반대로 재한미국인집단은 동일 인종집단인 미국 집단과 차이가 없었다. 이 결과는 혼잡 규범으로서의 이용 밀도의 선호도가 이용자의 개인적 특성 및 인종적 특성뿐만이 아니라 문화인종적 특성에 영향을 받는다는 결론을 얻었다.

This study examined Korean and the U.S.A..'s television anti-smoking advertisements that were coined to discourage adults and teens smoking. A content analysis of 71 television advertisements listed in the "Smoking Guidance Program" operated by Korea Health Promotion Foundation. This study evaluated to detect whether the advertising content reflected core health communication theories such as health belief model, theory of reasoned action, and social cognitive theory used in the designing of anti-smoking ad message to change behavior and attitudes toward smoking unfavorably. The results showed that Korean anti-smoking ads mostly relied on social norm messages, followed by smoking attitude. The message of modeling and self-efficacy was least used; while, the U.S.A. ads focused more on modeling and self efficacy. This difference comes from the cultural difference. Namely, Korea focused more on collectivism rather than individualism. The anti-smoking ads of Korea and the U.S.A. most frequently adopted horror and humor rather than sadness, no appeal, and angry. The ads targeted more on adults rather than teens. The research identifies the types of advertisements that are most likely to utilized and underutilize in the Korea and U.S.A. anti-smoking ads and contribute to further understandings of anti-smoking ads theoretically.

정보기술의 무한한 잠재력에도 불구하고 이로 인한 문제점들이 부각되고 있는 바, 그 수용여부에 따라 사회계층간 심각한 정보격차 현상이 나타나고 있다. 그러나 정책격차는 인터넷 이용을 통해 상당부분 완화시킬 수 있으며, 실제로 미국의 경우를 FIND/SVP의 통계조사를 토대로 그 실태를 살펴보고자 한다.
