현재 미국 데이비슨 초등학교에서 도서미디어 교사로 활동하고 있는 송은경씨가 4월 학교도서관 미디어의 달과 관련해 미국의 도서미디어 교사의 자격과 역할, 학교도서관 미디어의 달 활용방법, 학교도서관 미디어의 달의 각종 행사를 소개해 주었다. 우리나라 학교도서관 활성화에 좋은 참고가 되기를 바란다.

The purpose of this study Is to investigate how federal legislations for school libraries and school library standards have affected the development of school libraries in the U. S. The U. S. school library statistics, school library standards, and federal legislation were analyzed. The results show that school libraries have been developed by continuous supporting from federal legislation, rather than that of states' governments or school districts. The school library standards also are considered important factors for school libraries' improvement. As understanding the history of the U. S. school libraries' development, Korean school libraries are needed persistent supports from Korean government.

This study inquired into the significance and the Process of development of military library being recently issued as a movement to establish a library In the military units in Korea, focusing on the library management of military in the United States. Firstly, the history of military libraries in the United States and military library service of the U.S. Armed Forces during the Korea War was investigated and analyzed. And, the establishing status, organization, and the contents of library service program in the United States was researched.

지난 7월 20일 미국대사관 자료정보센터 주최로 '미국에서의 도서관 역할과 미래' 에 대한 워크숍이 개최되었다. 이날 모임에는 약 100명의 공공, 대학, 전문, 특수도서관 사서 및 조사부 기자들이 참석하였으며, 도서관 환경의 급격한 변화 속에서 우리 도서관과 사서가 어떻게 미래를 준비할 것인가에 대하여 미국 도서관계 인사들의 발표에 이어 청중들간의 활발한 토의가 있었다. 해외 도서관 인사들의 새로운 시각이 국내 도서관계에 도움이 되었으면 하는 바람에서 주요 발표내용을 요약하여 이번 호에 게재한다.

‘역자 주-이글은 미국도서관협회 산하인 대학 및 조사연구도서관협회에서 발행하는 월간지’College and Research Libraries' 1973년 3월호(제23권 2호)에 실린 글이다. 컴퓨터가 도서관계에 많이 도입되고는 있지만 수서 및 목록문제는 여전히 가장 중심적인 문제로서 관심의 대상이 되고 있다. 그렇기 때문에 미국에서 국가적으로 계획을 추진하고 있는 것이다. 계획적인 수서와 협동목록이 국가적인 견지에서 볼 때 막대한 재정절감을 가져올 수 있는 것이기 때문이다. 비록 우리들의 형편이 컴퓨터를 미국에서와 같이 광범위하게 활용할 수 있는 단계에 있지는 않으나 선진국의 도서관들에게 다소나마 도움과 자극을 줄 수 있다면 역자로서 매우 만족스럽게 생각하는 바이다. 원문 명 및 필자: The national Program for Acquisitions and Cataloging : Its Impact on University Libraries, by Carol F.
