  • This study aims to propose and apply a song analysis method for musical songs and acting. Prior to rehearsing a musical on stage, students and actors practice diverse exercises ranging from singing, acting and dancing. Among them, singing a musical song requires the actor not only to learn the pitch, beat and melody of the music but also to express the story and scene of the character in combination. Previous studies on analysis focused on research from the perspective of individual elements of singing, acting, and dancing rather than the proposal of comprehensive analysis methods. It is time for comprehensive analysis methods to be developed to practice musical songs and demonstrate them on stage. This study selected "Epiphany" sung by Todd from the musical Sweeney Todd(1979) as the subject of analysis. The song was analyzed in five stages: synopsis, music analysis, lyrics analysis, Uta Hagen's The Six Steps analysis, and Michael Chekhov's Psychological Gesture analysis. Through proposing and applying this step-by-step analysis method, this study verifies the usefulness of musical song analysis for practising both musical theory and practical skills at the same time and provides a base for future studies.

  • The most important role of actors is to transmit the thoughts and feelings to the audience or viewers. The expression methods of acting of each genre are clearly different. In order for the actors to act, crossing over the boundary of each genre such as movies, TV, dramas, musicals, they should understand the characteristics of each of the subdivided genres. If they understand the characteristics of the acting method different from one another and acquire the expression method to adapt to the spatial circumstances of each of the media, it becomes freer to act, crossing over the boundary of each of the genres. For the sake of this, actors must understand and acquire the characteristics of each of the genres. In order to compare differences in domestic/foreign curriculums, selecting musical-related departments of domestic colleges with four-year course and 2 or 3-year course, and also five musical-related schools in the US and another five schools in France, the actual lesson status of dance curriculum was researched. In the results, for the development of Korean musical, it would be necessary to reorganize its curriculum. First, the systematic dance curriculum suitable for musical site would be needed. Second, the dance technique lesson suitable for diversified musical expressions should be strengthened. Third, teaching methods for the characterized musical dance would be necessary. Above all, we need effective education method concerned with performance venues. Musical students are facing difficulties in performing acting, singing, and dancing at the same time. In reality, it is even tough to learn a single area among them. For the original Korean-style musical that could be imitated by no one, the systematic curriculum of college is very important.

  • Jeong Sun-Ah built up her performance career for twenty years with bold and energetic acting and solidified her status as a leading actress of Korean musical since her debut. To benefit from the value of her experience this study performed an in-depth interview with her, applying the Theory of "Projection" and "Back-projection", which are the psychological principles of acting, and derived "acting(entering the roles)" and "de-acting(leaving the roles)" techniques. As result, Her acting mechanism involved emptying her ego, embodying a persona by projecting the role created by intensive exploration of materials like previous performance, film of the same title, original novel, and script, and then getting the ego back by back-projecting through dynamic activities such as overseas travel and dance. She pre-studied the roles by physically visiting sites that are important to the characters. She was unique in that she pursued a difference by changing vocal trainers for each musical production and undertook more intense physical training than vocal practice to achieve powerful singing performance. In most of her works (75%), she suffered from aftereffects such as depression, narcissism, hysteria, and insomnia due to disorder caused by breaking away from the roles. However, she relied on self-help and alternatives are needed in the future such as reinforcement of expert counselling. Jeong Sun-Ah appeared on an average of 1.6 productions per year, practiced for an average of 1.7 months, and performed for an average of 3.9 months with an average of 100 days of break between productions. Her performance record from this research demonstrates her constant preparation and passion, as well as the know-how of reserving and distributing energy. So, it has a valuable implications for acting education and self-management of actors and actress.

  • I attempted to study the resolution of how I can show the essence of an original musical production to audience, the possibilities of how recreate impossible elements according to Korean musical environment because of cultural and linguistic differences, and verify the meaning of adjusting an original production to Korean one through directorial approaches to licensed musical production. I mainly exemplified 2009 Korean production (Charlotte Theatre, March ~ August, 2009) that I directed. The purpose that I wanted to analyze the case of Korean production mainly is able to prove a wide variety of possible challenges rather than simply licensed ones because the former was recreated in 30 years after the first original production. Recreation and coaching to acting through fine and precise analysis of an original production, Koreanizing Western culture of the licensed musical, resolving the problem of linguistic nuances are the important ways to direct licensed musical. For licensed musical director, cooperation with original creative team and Korean production company must be the most important job.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of contemporary vocalization and songs in order to learn various vocal methods in musical vocal classes and apply them to students. Musical vocalization methods change and evolve according to the demands of the times. Today, the characteristics of contemporary musicals cannot be limited to anyone genre, and the genre of music as well as the style of work are derived from several genres and coexist. 'The Girl in 14G,' the subject of this study, is a song that appeared in the album of Kristin Chenoweth, a famous American musical actress who uses various vocal techniques. Jeanine Tesori composed this song with various vocal techniques such as Classical, Jazz, Belting, and Mixed Voice to express New York's representative music genres of Broadway Musical, Metropolitan Opera and East Village Jazz. The development of the song consists of a difficult process in which one actor has to act across three different characters in three musical styles and singing methods. Singing 'The Girl in 14G' requires a lot of effort and practice as it is necessary to acquire various vocal techniques, which makes it a good text for students and actors in the educational perspective. As a result, this study confirmed that this song is a representative piece with a solid musical and dramatic composition and is a good example that shows the convergence characteristics of contemporary musical vocal techniques.
