  • This paper aims to identify the characteristics implied in the process of change of Stephen Sondheim's musical style and to derive the structural communication tools that connect the creator and audience and the implications. The strategies that appear in Sondheim's musical works are the following. First, Sondheim's early musical works follow the principles of book musical and emphasize the integration faithful to the basic elements such as the rhythm and meaning of the lyrics. Second, in the era of early postmodernism, Sondheim attempts the principle of extreme deconstruction through the concept musical Company and pursues rational thought through fragmented dramatic flow. Third, while maintaining dramatic linearity to overcome the lack of immersion caused by extreme deconstruction, Sondheim realizes a more elaborate and formalized fusion style of the principles of integration and deconstruction through the choruses and the songs of the characters in Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd. Finally, Sondheim attempts multiple experiments to break down the boundaries of act and scene and to express new subject matters through his works such as Sunday Park with George and Into the Woods. In conclusion, Sondheim's fusion experiments and strategies are the process of finding a framework and a medium of communication to induce dramatic immersion of audience and at the same time create rational thinking about social problems to deliver the message of the creative work with the leading aesthetics of the modern musical's box-office success.

  • This study focuses on the potential for creating spatial and atmospheric effects in small theaters using mobile stage equipment, without being constrained by physical space or theater facilities, for mega musical productions. With the continuous growth of mega musicals in the domestic market, the study analyzes the distribution and sales of musical works in Korea and proposes methods for creating spatial effects in university musical education to facilitate the production of mega musicals in small theaters. The mobile stage equipment is designed based on the principle of the periaktoi, a stage mechanism used in ancient Greek theater and the characteristics of mobile stage equipment used in musicals such as <Notre Dame de Paris> and <Laundry>. The mobile stage equipment is a four-sided column-shaped device, which is applied to the musical <Les Misérables> to derive the potential for creating spatial effects, representing the inner state of characters, and forming the mood of the drama. The study is expected to provide opportunities for performing mega musical productions in university musical education and to contribute to the development of the musical industry and education. The utilization of mobile stage equipment demonstrates the possibility of producing mega musical productions in small theaters.

Despite the various discussions in the venture capital practice in the performing art area, there has been few studies analyzing the investors' perspective. While juggling with the 'artistic value' and 'rate of return', the investors are concerned about the 'transparency' of the performing art practice. When coupled with the subjective judgment of 'artistic value', the information asymmetry between the investor and the performing art manager becomes more delicate. In the performing art business, 'SPC(Special Purpose Company)' is considered a possible solution to organize the deal structure in this field. • In 2019, Disney's musical film "Aladdin" was newly introduced with Princess Jasmine's theme song "Speechless," which was not featured in the animation "Aladdin" in 1992. Written as a theme song, "Speechless" expresses Princess Jasmine as a self-reliant, enterprising and dignified woman. The song made the change in Princess Jasmine's character very articulate. She has developed herself as an active and enthusiastic character from a rather passive and reserved figure. The musical film "Aladdin" has drawn much attention and love from many audiences with its own narrative and original songs, but the addition of a new theme song "Speechless", which was not in the animation in 1992, made the musical film "Aladdin" even more powerful and meaningful. The study examined the organic relationship between the musical features and narratives of the newly included theme song 'Speechless' in the musical film Aladdin. Through the analysis of the six scenes that include the musical features of the theme song "Speechless," the study looked at how the relationship between music and narratives had an influence on cinematic expression.

  • This study aims to propose and apply a song analysis method for musical songs and acting. Prior to rehearsing a musical on stage, students and actors practice diverse exercises ranging from singing, acting and dancing. Among them, singing a musical song requires the actor not only to learn the pitch, beat and melody of the music but also to express the story and scene of the character in combination. Previous studies on analysis focused on research from the perspective of individual elements of singing, acting, and dancing rather than the proposal of comprehensive analysis methods. It is time for comprehensive analysis methods to be developed to practice musical songs and demonstrate them on stage. This study selected "Epiphany" sung by Todd from the musical Sweeney Todd(1979) as the subject of analysis. The song was analyzed in five stages: synopsis, music analysis, lyrics analysis, Uta Hagen's The Six Steps analysis, and Michael Chekhov's Psychological Gesture analysis. Through proposing and applying this step-by-step analysis method, this study verifies the usefulness of musical song analysis for practising both musical theory and practical skills at the same time and provides a base for future studies.

  • The purpose of this study is to reveal the significance of musicals and find a way to utilize them in Korean language culture classes for foreigners. Korean language education aims to improve communication skills, and cultural education is necessary to help students understand not only the language but also the social background and context of the language. Accordingly, the author of this study has put together a lesson plan for Korean culture incorporating musicals, a topic that has been heretofore disregarded in Korean language education. Musicals are an appealing art medium for Korean language learners, as they provide striking visuals centered around distinct narrative structures and music. The musical "Swag Age: Shout out Joseon!," which this study focuses on, provides particularly suitable content, as it deals with social issues that are relevant even in contemporary Korean society and includes sijo (poetry), which can be used to teach traditional Korean literature. Based on the above characteristics, the author of this study outlines a Korean culture lesson plan teaching sijo through the musical "Swag Age: Shout out Joseon!" The class will be for learners of intermediate level and above, and consists of 4 sessions: 1) Understanding the overall plot of the musical, 2) Learning about Korean sijo, 3) Writing sijo based on your own life, and 4) Presenting your own sijo. This culture class is significant in that it goes beyond simply learning about sijo and enables students to internalize the meaning of and actively enjoy sijo by writing their own versions. In addition, it is expected to be a compelling class that, on top of its educational value, introduces and allows students to experience a wider range of Korean popular culture by adding the musical genre to the common repertoire of movies, dramas, plays, and pop songs often covered in Korean culture classes.
