  • The purpose of this study is to examine relationship between water consumption and economic growth in Korea, and to obtain policy implications of the results. To this end, we attempt to provide more careful consideration of the causality issues by applying rigorous techniques of Granger causality. Tests for unit roots, co-integration, and Granger causality based on an error-correction model are presented. The existence of bi-directional causality between water consumption and economic growth in Korea is detected. This finding has various implications for policy analysts and forecasters in Korea. Economic growth requires enormous water consumption, though there are many other factors contributing to economic growth, and water consumption is but one part of it. Thus, this study generates confidence in decisions to invest in the water supply infrastructure. Moreover, this study lends support to the argument that an increase in real income, ceteris paribus, gives rise to water consumption. Economic growth results in a higher proportion of national income spent on water supply services and stimulates further water consumption.

  • Today, as the specification of pigs increases, it is important to develop eco-friendly livestock feeds that do not add antibiotics to highly utilizable materials as feed resources, and to produce functional eco-friendly pork and processed products. The purpose of this study was to establish Rubus occidentalis (RO) byproducts containing various amounts of physiologically active substances such as anticancer, anti - inflammation and antioxidant as a raw material for pig feed. The multifaceted efficacy of the RO fermented fodder (ROFF) was confirmed by the nutrient transport factors and antioxidant activity of Berkshire pigs. ROFF was added 0.3% to the general diet and the efficacy was confirmed by feeding diets to Berkshire pigs according to each weight for 43~73 days. As a result, the total cholesterol (TC), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) and HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels were decreased or were increased in the castrated male and female Berkshire pigs but not significantly. It was confirmed that the tendency was improved in nutrition physiology. The biochemical levels of female finishing pigs were not significant but increased. In the case of finishing pigs with possibility of pregnancy, it is expected that the nutrition supply for piglet production and will help in the production of the healthy piglet. Transferrin (TFE) levels tended to increase in female growing pig and 110-150 kg finishing pigs. Thus ROFF could minimize the negative effects of iron contents deficiency in female Berkshire pigs. Glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPx1) activity was increased in castrated male and female 110-150 kg finishing pigs. Therefore, ROFF tends to improve the antioxidant capacity. The results of this study suggest that ROFF is one of the most favorable dietary sources when considering the contents of RO in feed. In particular, ROFF could have a positive effect on nutrient transport and iron content of female rather than castrated male Berkshire pigs.

  • Fresh water that can be used by a person of the total amount of water on the planet is increased because it is less than 0.01 % except underground water, ice and snow, etc. water management response need. In order to protect and efficiently utilize water resources, major countries are conducting water footprint studies that can quantitatively estimate the amount of water put into the operating phase of the resource harvesting phase, mainly agriculture. Korea has also recently developed a number of policies in order to cope with water shortages, and in the construction industry, as well as the need for basic research to support it has been emphasized. This study was constructed DB up to the raw material harvesting step, the transport step, the production stage in order to estimate the water consumption of resources to be put into the work process to target the drainage of the road. Water usage estimation method was utilized the method presented in the Water Footprint Manual and the environmental score card certification guide, unit water usage each drainage main method was calculated after estimating the water footprint considering the water character factor, indirect water and the direct water, the water consumption factor of material input to each process. Brown asphalt, rebar, remicon of the drainage material as a result of the water footprint calculation accounted for 97 % of the total. Drainage method is a culvert, a side channel, a culvert wing wall, reinforced concrete open channel accounted for 92.2 % of the total. Drainage total step-by-step calculated water consumption and water footprint was found in order of raw material harvesting step, transport stage, production stage. Water footprint each drainage method or total drainage material calculated in this study can be used as a base data in the agricultural and construction sectors. In order to increase the reliability of the analysis, it is believed that further overseas databases will be needed for continuous review and research.

  • Changes in soil water potential and soil water content, evapotranspiration and water use efficiency during red-pepper cultivation were investigated under different mulching conditions(Non-mulching, Transparent vinyl and Black vinyl mulching) in a sandy loam soil for 1982 & 1983. The soil water potential up to 20cm depth for transparent vinyl mulching were higher than those of non-mulching condition until the rain free days lasted 25 days, and more than 6 weeks for black vinyl mulching. Root zone water content up to 10cm, 20cm, 30cm, and 50cm for transparent vinyl mulching were lower than those of non-mulching condition after the rain free days lasted more than 2weeks, 3weeks, 5weeks and 6weeks, respectivery. Soil water depletion of deep soil depth were more than that of surface zone for transparent vinyl mulching as the rain free days continued, whereas there was no difference to soil depth for non-mulching condition. Evapotranspiration rates under transparent vinyl mulching condition were higher in dry season but lower in wet season than those of non-mulching condition. Total evapotranspiration during growing season of mulching with transparent or black vinyl was not siginficantly different from that of non-mulching condition, whereas water use efficiency was increased by vinyl mulching with not only whole mulching but also top mulching.

  • Determining the actual evapotranspiration(ETa) of a crop, and appropriate water management of the crop based on the ETa are very important For increasing the yield. The present study aimed at determining ETa and crop coefficient of sesame growing under different climatic conditions with the transparent thin polyethylene film mulch(0.03 mm thick) and without this mulch. Bottomless cylindrical lysimeters(105cm in diameter, 120cm in height, protruded 20 cm above the soil surface) were installed on the field of sandy loam "Bonyang series" soil with a moderate drainage. The determination of ETa was performed by measuring each component of a model equation, $ETa=(R+I)-\{Ro+(D1+D2)\}+C{\pm}{\Delta}S$. Sesame, cv. "Ansan" was sown in two rows with the spacing of $50{\times}15cm$ on May 10 in 1991 and 1992. The mulching covers 80% of the soil surface. Sesame consumed the water of 139.0 mm(1.53 mm/day) and 171.2 mm(1.59 mm/day) in ETa without the film mulch, but that of 132.6 mm(1.46 mm/day) and 199.8 mm(1.85 mm/day) with its mulching through both years of 1991 and 1992, respectively. The ETa's accounted for 52 and 69% of the potential evapotranspiration(ETp) in the mulched crop, and 54 and 59% of ETp in the non-mulched crop 1991 through 1992, respectively. Its ETa's were much more and their gap between the mulching and non-mulching treatment was larger in 1992 than in 1991 as a result of the better climatic condition of 1992.

  • This research carried out forest community classification on the basis of the methods of ZM school, in order to furnish useful information needed for forest management, and for afforestation and preservations of Abies koreana forest which was Korean native species, and the research results could be summarized as follows. Abies koreana forest was divided into 10 vegetation units ; This forest was divided into Abies koreana-Quercus mongolica community and Abies koreana-Sasa quelpartensis community. Abies koreana-Quercus mongolica community was divided into Tripterygium regelii group, Patrinia saniculaefolia group, and Typical group, and Tripterygium regelii group seas divided into Typical subgroup. Pimpinella brachycarpa subgroup, and Hemirocallis fulva subgroup. Abies koreana-Sasa quelpartensis community was divided into Berberis koreana group, Trachelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium group, and Typical group. Berberis koreana group was divided into Typical subgroup and Hepatica asiatica subgroup, and Tranchelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium group was divided into Hepatica asiatica subgroup and Typical subgroup. According to the results of the analysis by coincidence method, Abies koreana-Quercus mongolica community represented in Mt. Chiri, Mt. Deokyu and Mt. Kaya which were located in the Sobaek mountains, Abies koreana-Sasa quelpartensis community represented in Mt. Hanla. Therefore it was thought that Abies koreana forest was classified by geographical position, and vegetation units of Abies koreana forest tended to be classified by the altitude and topography. As for DBH and height of Abies koreana, mean DBH and height of Abies koreana-Quercus mongolica community were each 28.4cm, 10.6m that were larger than mean DBH and mean height(each 23.6cm, 6.3m) of Sasa quelpartensis community. Among Abies koreana-Quercus mongolica community, Patrinia saniculae-folia group had the smallest mean DBH and mean height(20cm, 5m), and among Abies koreana-Sasa quelpartensis community, Typical group had the smallest mean DBH and mean height(4cm, 3m).

  • Recently International Water Association(IWA) has proposed new performance indicators for water supply services and their successful applications are being reported continually. According to the various reports, the percentage indicators were suggested not to be used for performance comparison, especially where the targeted areas have great difference in consumption per service connection. But unfortunately in Korea the revenue water ratio, one of the percentage indicators is still being used to set up the goal of water-related administration and to compare the performances between systems. Therefore this study aimed to prove the inapplicability of the percentage indicators with nation-wide data and to suggest better performance indicators for more efficient water loss management. According to the result of the comparison of various performance indicators with conventional one, it is roved that percentage indicators ca not evaluate the performance efficiently where the local situations are significantly different. It is suggested that the better performance indicators such as real losses per service connection or ILI should be used to benchmark the performances of water suppliers on water loss management so thai the problems of water losses could be identified easily and recovered effectively.
