  • Pipelines are buried in urban area, and the position (depth and orientation) of buried pipeline should be clearly identified before ground excavation. Although various geophysical methods can be used to detect the buried pipeline, it is not easy to identify the exact information of pipeline due to heterogeneous ground condition. Among various non-destructive geo-exploration methods, ground penetration radar (GPR) can explore the ground subsurface rapidly with relatively low cost compared to other exploration methods. However, the exploration data obtained from GPR requires considerable experiences because interpretation is not intuitive. Recently, researches on automated detection technology for GPR data using deep learning have been conducted. However, the lack of GPR data which is essential for training makes it difficult to build up the reliable detection model. To overcome this problem, we conducted a preliminary study to improve the performance of the detection model using finite difference time domain (FDTD)-based numerical analysis. Firstly, numerical analysis was performed with homogeneous soil media having single permittivity. In case of heterogeneous ground, numerical analysis was performed considering the ground heterogeneity using fractal technique. Secondly, deep learning was carried out using convolutional neural network. Detection Model-A is trained with data set obtained from homogeneous ground. And, detection Model-B is trained with data set obtained from homogeneous ground and heterogeneous ground. As a result, it is found that the detection Model-B which is trained including heterogeneous ground shows better performance than detection Model-A. It indicates the ground heterogeneity should be considered to increase the performance of automated detection model for GPR exploration.

  • This paper presents a system which recognizes dynamic hand gesture for virtual reality (VR). A dynamic hand gesture is a method of communication for human and computer who uses gestures, especially both hands and fingers. Since the human hands and fingers are not the same in physical dimension, the produced by two persons with their hands may not have the same numerical values where obtained through electronic sensors. To recognize meaningful gesture from continuous gestures which have no token of beginning and end, this system segments current motion states using the state automata. In this paper, we apply a fuzzy min-max neural network and feature analysis method using fuzzy logic for on-line pattern recognition.

  • For efficient welding it is necessary to maintain stability of the welding process and control the shape of the welding bead. The welding quality can be controlled by monitoring important parameters, such as, the Arc Voltage, Welding Current and Welding Speed during the welding process. Welding systems use either a vision sensor or an Arc sensor, both of which are unable to control these parameters directly. Therefore, it is difficult to obtain necessary bead geometry without automatically controlling the welding parameters through the sensors. In this paper we propose a novel approach using fuzzy logic and neural networks for improving welding qualify and maintaining the desired weld bead shape. Through experiments we demonstrate that the proposed system can be used for real welding processes. The results demonstrate that the system can efficiently estimate the weld bead shape and remove the welding detects.

  • The accuracy of peripheral object recognition algorithms using 3D data sensors such as LiDAR in autonomous vehicles has been increasing through many studies, but this requires high performance hardware and complex structures. This object recognition algorithm acts as a large load on the main processor of an autonomous vehicle that requires performing and managing many processors while driving. To reduce this load and simultaneously exploit the advantages of 3D sensor data, we propose 2D data-based recognition using the ROI generated by extracting physical properties from 3D sensor data. In the environment where the brightness value was reduced by 50% in the basic image, it showed 5.3% higher accuracy and 28.57% lower performance time than the existing 2D-based model. Instead of having a 2.46 percent lower accuracy than the 3D-based model in the base image, it has a 6.25 percent reduction in performance time.

  • The cloud computing paradigm introduced pay-per-use models in which IT services can be created and scaled on-demand. However, service providers are still concerned about the constraints imposed by their physical infrastructures. In order to keep the required QoS and achieve the goal of upholding the SLA, virtualized resources must be efficiently consolidated to maximize system throughput while keeping energy consumption at a minimum. Using ANN, we propose a predictive SLA-aware approach for consolidating virtualized resources in a cloud environment. To maintain the QoS and to establish an optimal trade-off between performance and energy efficiency, the server's utilization threshold dynamically adapts to the physical machine's resource consumption. Furthermore, resource-intensive VMs are prevented from getting underprovisioned by assigning them to hosts that are both capable and reputable. To verify the performance of our proposed approach, we compare it with non-optimized conventional approaches as well as with other previously proposed techniques in a heterogeneous cloud environment setup.

  • Recent studies demonstrate that machine learning has expanded in the field of seismic interpretation. Many convolutional neural networks have been developed for seismic sequence identification, which is important for seismic interpretation. However, expense and time limitations indicate that there is insufficient data available to provide a sufficient dataset to train supervised machine learning programs to identify seismic sequences. In this study, patch division and data augmentation are applied to mitigate this lack of data. Furthermore, to obtain spatial information that could be lost during patch division, an artificial channel is added to the original data to indicate depth. Seismic sequence identification is performed using a U-Net network and the Netherlands F3 block dataset from the dGB Open Seismic Repository, which offers datasets for machine learning, and the predicted results are evaluated. The results show that patch-based U-Net seismic sequence identification is improved by data augmentation and the addition of an artificial channel.

  • Mathematical modeling is the process of representing physical phenomena using equations, and it often describes various scientific phenomena through differential equations. Numerical analysis, which is capable of approximating solutions to partial differential equations representing physical phenomena, is widely utilized. However, in high-dimensional or nonlinear systems, computational costs can substantially increase, leading to potential numerical instability or convergence issues. Recently, Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) have emerged as an alternative approach. A PINN leverages physical laws even with limited data to provide highly reliable predictive performance and can address the convergence issues and high computational costs associated with numerical analysis. This paper analyzes the weak signals, research trends, patent trends, and case studies of PINNs. On the basis of this analysis, it proposes directions for the development of PINN techniques in the agricultural field. In particular, the application of PINNs in agriculture is expected to be more effective than in other industries because of their ability to reflect real-time changes in biological processes. While the technology readiness level of PINNs remains low, the potential for model training with minimal data and real-time prediction capabilities suggests that PINNs could replace traditional numerical analysis models. It is anticipated that the research and industrial applications of PINN will develop at an increasing pace while focusing on addressing the complexity of mathematical models in agriculture, mathematical modeling and the application of various biological processes; securing key patents related to PINNs; and standardizing PINN technology in the field of agriculture.

  • In relation to the algae bloom, four types of blue-green algae that emit toxic substances are designated and managed as harmful Cyanobacteria, and prediction information using a physical model is being also published. However, as algae are living organisms, it is difficult to predict according to physical dynamics, and not easy to consider the effects of numerous factors such as weather, hydraulic, hydrology, and water quality. Therefore, a lot of researches on algal bloom prediction using machine learning have been recently conducted. In this study, the characteristic importance of water quality factors affecting the occurrence of Cyanobacteria harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) were analyzed using the random forest (RF) model for Bohyeonsan Dam and Yeongcheon Dam located in Yeongcheon-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do and also predicted the occurrence of harmful blue-green algae using the machine learning and deep learning models and evaluated their accuracy. The water temperature and total nitrogen (T-N) were found to be high in common, and the occurrence prediction of CyanoHABs using artificial neural network (ANN) also predicted the actual values closely, confirming that it can be used for the reservoirs that require the prediction of harmful cyanobacteria for algal management in the future.

  • Lack of streamflow observations makes model calibration difficult and limits model performance improvement. Satellite-based remote sensing products offer a new alternative as they can be actively utilized to obtain hydrological data. Recently, several studies have shown that artificial intelligence-based solutions are more appropriate than traditional conceptual and physical models. In this study, a data-driven approach combining various recurrent neural networks and decision tree-based algorithms is proposed, and the utilization of satellite remote sensing information for AI training is investigated. The satellite imagery used in this study is from MODIS and SMAP. The proposed approach is validated using publicly available data from 25 watersheds. Inspired by the traditional regionalization approach, a strategy is adopted to learn one data-driven model by integrating data from all basins, and the potential of the proposed approach is evaluated by using a leave-one-out cross-validation regionalization setting to predict streamflow from different basins with one model. The GRU + Light GBM model was found to be a suitable model combination for target basins and showed good streamflow prediction performance in ungauged basins (The average model efficiency coefficient for predicting daily streamflow in 25 ungauged basins is 0.7187) except for the period when streamflow is very small. The influence of satellite remote sensing information was found to be up to 10%, with the additional application of satellite information having a greater impact on streamflow prediction during low or dry seasons than during wet or normal seasons.
