The use of lasers in medicine has opened up entirely new fields of therapy and diagnosis. The process in biotechnical applications of laser is basically different from traditional one in other technical field because of critical account to the human body. This paper surveys the principle of biomedical applications as well as possible future developments in laser medicine. In particular, the following subjects are extensively presented : 1) laser-tissue interaction, 2) therapeutic, and diagnostic technique, 3) laser op tical fiber for medicine, and 4) laser safety.

A systematic methodology is developed for the prediction of the lithology using electrofacies classification from wireline log data. Multivariate statistical techniques are adopted to segment well log measurements and group the segments into electrofacies types. To consider corresponding contribution of each log and reduce the computational dimension, multivariate logs are transformed into a single variable through principal components analysis. Resultant principal components logs are segmented using the statistical zonation method to enhance the quality and efficiency of the interpreted results. Hierarchical cluster analysis is then used to group the segments into electrofacies. Optimal number of groups is determined on the basis of the ratio of within-group variance to total variance and core data. This technique is applied to the wells in the Korea Continental Shelf. The results of field application demonstrate that the prediction of lithology based on the electrofacies classification works well with reliability to the core and cutting data. This methodology for electrofacies determination can be used to define reservoir characterization which is helpful to the reservoir management.

태양에너지 이용이 크게 역설된지도 벌써 상당한 년월이 흘렀으나 대규모 이용은 아직 실용화되지 못하고 있다. 다수의 반사경을 사용하여 태양 광선을 탑 위에 올려놓은 보일러에 집중시켜 여기에서 발생하는 수증기를 이용하여 터어빈을 회전, 발전하는 태양열발전 방식의 10MW의 파이롯드 플랜트가 금년중에 미국에 건설될 예정으로 있다. 이것은 앞으로 100MW의 발전소를 현실시키기 위한 것으로 기술적으로는 큰 어려움이 없고 대량생산이 되면 경제적으로도 원자력발전보다 오히려 유리하다고 한다. 기상조건과 지리적조건이 다른우리나라에서는 실현이 어렵겠지만 이러한 류의 구상은 우리나라에서도 가능할 것이다. 이 헬리오스타트(시계장치로 회전하는 반사경에 의하여 태양의 반사광선을 일정한 방향으로 보내는 장치)를 사용하는 발전에 대하여 휴우스톤대학의 물리학 교수이며 태양 에너지 연구소장인 힐데프란드박사와 같은 물리학교수이며 동연구소의 부소장인 밴드할박사가 상세한 논문을 발표하고 있다. 다음에 그 논문의 요약을 소개한다.

초기 컴퓨터는 주로 원자핵물리와 관련된 계산에 사용되었으나 곧바로 컴퓨터의 도움을 받아 물리 문제를 해결하고자 하는 방법은 물리 전 분야에서 광범위하게 적용되었다. 물질의 가장 작은 요소를 찾고자하는 소립자물리학에서부터, 물질의 성질을 규명하는 응집물질물리, 나아가서 거대 우주의 구조를 밝히고자 하는 우주론에 이르기까지 컴퓨터의 사용이 확장되고 있다. 이러한 확장은 전산물리^[2]라는 물리의 큰 분야를 형성하였고 현재 미국물리학회의 14개 분과 중 하나로 자리 매김하고 있다.^[3]
