Critical Analysis of Cultural Imperialism - From Simplistic Imperialism to Dynamic Cultural Fluid (문화제국주의의 비판적 고찰 - 단선적 문화제국주의에서 역동적인 국제적 문화 유동으로)

  • This article focuses on analysing and interpreting cultural imperialism issues that have long been debated. One of issues among them is related to the characteristics of international cultural fluid. What had been debated is that cultural imperialism has been ended or not and the debates were connected to the so called 'reverse cultural imperialism'. The other issue is about this fluid is the continuation of globalization or a part of localization and this is related to the phenomena of cultural homogenization or hybrid. General trend was that simplistic cultural imperialism which had been occurred during the 1970s and 1980s was no longer effective but global dominance by transnational global media is still strong and worldwide. Therefore my research interest is centered on how they look international cultural exchanges with regard to cultural imperialism. And is the framework of cultural imperialism thesis still effective tool in researching and analysing international cultural flows? How do we look globalization relating to international exchanges? Is globalization an another aspect of imperialism? In conclusion, international cultural fluid is not so simple. Like natural phenomena or human progress, a phenomenon is not consisted of a single factor or relation. Cultural fluid is a complex one mixed with various phenomena and relations. This is related to internal and external contradictions, internal and external dynamics of a society and nation, and social and cultural life of human beings. Recent research results show that globalization and localization are closely related to many country's programming schedule, and particular cultural interpretation of specific programmes and culture are adopted to the country's culture and patterns. Cultural fluid has both-sides. One the hand it has useful and positive sides and on the other hand it has harmful and negative aspects. Imperialistic factor, globalization, cultural homogenization or hybrid are all operated and functioned together in cultual fluid. It is difficult to say that cultural imperialism thesis has been ended because American and global media's dominance is still effective. What needed at this time for us is a complex and dynamic analysis of international cultural fluid instead of simplistic cultural imperialism.

The Impact of Understanding Korean Food on Image, Attitude, and Globalization Regarding Korean Food (한식에 대한 인식이 한식에 대한 이미지, 태도, 세계화와의 영향 관계 - 영어권.일본.중화권을 중심으로 -)

  • This study aims to suggest theoretical models to examine the composition factors of recognition, image, attitude toward Korean food and its globalization and investigate their relationships, which was analyzed based on the results of a survey. To achieve this research purpose, frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis and the analysis of Cronbach a values were performed using the SPSS 13.0 program, and multiple regression analysis and simple regression analysis were also performed to analyze their relationships. The results of this study are as follows. First, the recognition of Korean food influenced its image and attitude toward it. Second, image of Korean food had an effect on attitude toward it. Third, both image and attitude regarding Korean food influenced globalization of Korean food. Accordingly, what this study can contribute to in the development of Korean food culture are as follows. First, this study will contribute to making a good image of Korean food and its globalization by changing people's recognition, image, and attitude toward Korean food and making them interested in Korean food suitable for globalization. Second, this study will help to make detailed marketing strategies to globalize Korean products and culture through Korean food. Third, this study will be helpful for improving the image of Korean food and creating economic benefits by attracting Korean food tourism. Moreover, it will help to give Korean people hope and pride of their lives. Fourth, this study will help to promote activation of Korean food tourist resources by connecting Korean food recognized to be LOHAS and well-being foods with Korean cultural tourist resorts. Fifth, this study will make people have right recognition and attitude by developing nature-friendly and healthy Korean food culture. Sixth, this study will be a detonator for more active studies by encouraging researchers to be concerned about and participate in globalization and commercialization of Korean food continually.

직지상 제정 경축 세미나

  • 인류의 소중한 문화유산인 '직지'가 지난 4월 유네스코로부터 세계기록유산분야 최초의 시상제도인 '직지상'으로 제정된 것을 기념하기 위한 경축 세미나가 지난 6월 4일 오후 청주 고인쇄박물관 세미나실에서 열렸다. 이날 세미나의 제1주제는 허권 유네스코 문화팀장이 '직지상 의미와 전망'을 주제로 발표하고 김승환 충북대 교수의 사회로 황재봉 시의원, 임병무 충북일보 논설위원이 토론을 벌였다. 이어 제2주제로 박조원 한국문화정책연구원의 '직지상 제정과 세계화 추진'이란 주제발표와 전순동 충북대 교수의 사회로 강형기 충북대 교수의 박종관 충북민예총 사무처장이 토론을 벌였다. 제3주제는 노영민 국회의원이 '국가차원의 직지문화정책과 지원방안'이란 주제발표를 한데 이어 이동주 직지세계화추진단장, 남윤성 청주문화방송 특집부장의 토론이 있었다. 다음은 노영민 의원이 발표한 내용을 요약 소개한다.

  • 자유시장 경제를 신봉하는 사람들은 국가간 교역의 증대는 비교우위에 따른 무역의 증대를 의미하고 이것은 국가간 상호이익을 도모함으로써 세계적인 부를 증진시킨다고 주장한다. 세계화로 다른 나라의 다양한 물품을 우리나라 소비자들이 싼 값에 살 수 있고, 생산자도 세계의 넓은 시장에서 판매활동을 할 수 있으므로 세계적인 부를 증진시킨단 말은 일면 타당해 보인다. 그러나 후진국의 경제발전(특히 수입대체산업의 육성)에 악영향을 미칠 것이며, 선진국 경제에 후진국이 종속되는 결과를 낳을 것이라고 한다. 또한 세계화는 이익을 보는 계층과 손해를 보는 계층을 극명하게 나눠 놓음으로서 분쟁과 갈등을 증대시키는 면도 있다. 예를 들면 최근의 농산물시장의 개방에 따른 우리나라 농민들의 피해, 자본의 대량유입과 대량유출에 따른 외환위기의 위험성 등 개발도상국을 비롯한 중.후진국이 감수해야 할 지도 모르는 부담이 상당하다. 경제적인 종속 이외에도 사회적, 문화적인 종속을 우려하는 시각도 있다. 이러한 가운데 세계화를 주장하는 미국과 대립되는 상황이 나타나는데 이는 자국 문화를 수호하려는 정부의 노력으로 보인다.
