  • The purpose of this study was to analyze how the Library and Information Science (LIS) related research efforts in Korea contributed to the progress of the Human Computer Interaction (HCI) discipline to identify the potential collaboration research partners and topics. The following data was used for the network and frequency analysis: titles, keywords and affiliation information extracted from the Korean journals serving the LIS fields as well as the conference proceedings of the Korean HCI society. Information communication technology, computer engineering, and technology industry had been active in research collaborations but LIS field was comparatively not active. This study was able to determine that LIS researchers carried out important research but they had not much interests in the topics that required interdisciplinary collaboration. However, there were a number of papers, which were not authored by LIS discipline researchers, in the LIS related journals. In addition, there are a few ongoing interdisciplinary research projects which included LIS researchers. This reveals that it is possible for the LIS field could play an important role in the future if the researchers actively participate the collaborative projects.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the extent of collaboration by comparing team size patterns of Korean LIS journals with international LIS journals. For the sample dataset, the top 30 ranked international journals in the field of LIS were selected using the Scimago Journal Rank (SJR), and 4 Korean LIS journals were selected for the years between 2010-2016. The size of the team who authored Korean journal articles were collected from the RISS database, while the size of team who authored international journal articles from the top LIS journals were collected using the Scopus database. The result of this study shows that the most common team size ranged from one member team to three member teams. Overall, the collaborative team size in international journals was higher than Korean journals. In particular, one member team was the most common team size in Korean journals, whereas two members team was most common in the international journals. At the subject level, the most common team size was one team member in the subject area of Library Related, while the most common team size was three team members in the subject area of Science/Engineering. The result of this study suggests that within LIS, the size of teams may vary considerably due to differences in subject areas.

  • The goal of the present study is to identify the topic trend in the field of library and information science in Korea. To this end, we collected titles and s of the papers published in four major journals such as Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, Journal of Korean Library and Information Science Society, and Journal of the Korean BIBLIA Society for library and Information Science during 1970 and 2012. After that, we applied the well-received topic modeling technique, Latent Dirichlet Allocation(LDA), to the collected data sets. The research findings of the study are as follows: 1) Comparison of the extracted topics by LDA with the subject headings of library and information science shows that there are several distinct sub-research domains strongly tied with the field. Those include library and society in the domain of "introduction to library and information science," professionalism, library and information policy in the domain of "library system," library evaluation in the domain of "library management," collection development and management, information service in the domain of "library service," services by library type, user training/information literacy, service evaluation, classification/cataloging/meta-data in the domain of "document organization," bibliometrics/digital libraries/user study/internet/expert system/information retrieval/information system in the domain of "information science," antique documents in the domain of "bibliography," books/publications in the domain of "publication," and archival study. The results indicate that among these sub-domains, information science and library services are two most focused domains. Second, we observe that there is the growing trend in the research topics such as service and evaluation by library type, internet, and meta-data, but the research topics such as book, classification, and cataloging reveal the declining trend. Third, analysis by journal show that in Journal of the Korean Society for information Management, information science related topics appear more frequently than library science related topics whereas library science related topics are more popular in the other three journals studied in this paper.

  • This study attempts to investigate the scatter of citation, obsolescence, and half-life of some social science literature. For the study 131 journal articles taken from three scholarly journals in the field of Economics. Public Administration, and Library and Information Science are selected and all analyses are taken in terms of the material types, the publication place, and the publication year of the papers cited by those journal articles. In result, it was found that the half-life of monographs is 6.76, that of scholarly journal articles 8.07, that of reports 6.49, and that of theses 3.45. Also, the study finds that most researchers in those field, cited more articles published in foreign countries(67.79%) that those published from Korea(32.21%).

  • In the many countries including United States, numerous librarians participate as research project members and publish papers in related/non-LIS journals. In recent years, the quantity of papers published by librarians in LIS journals and the non-LIS journals is similar. This study analyzed whether librarians join the research team in various academic fields in South Korea, carry out the research together, and publish the papers in co-authorship. This study collected and analyzed 319 articles of the authors affiliated with libraries published in the last 10 years from the Korea Citation Index. As a result, there were not many articles published by the authors in the non-LIS journal. Nonetheless, specific examples of librarians collaborating closely with other disciplinary research teams were observed; Medicine, Architecture, Materials Engineering, etc. Librarians' contribution in research projects in South Korea is expected to increase in the future. Therefore, it is desirable to prepare for this such as opening courses on research projects in the library and the department of LIS which is training librarians as well.
