Detection of Various Sized Car Number Plates using Edge-based Region Growing (에지 기반 영역확장 기법을 이용한 다양한 크기의 번호판 검출)

  • Conventional approaches for car number plate detection have dealt with those input images having similar sizes and simple background acquired under well organized environment. Thus their performance get reduced when input images include number plates with different sizes and when they are acquired under different lighting conditions. To solve these problem, this paper proposes a new scheme that uses the geometrical features of number plates and their topological information with reference to other features of the car. In the first step, those edges constructing a rectangle are detected and several pixels neighboring those edges are selected as the seed pixels for region growing. For region growing, color and intensity are used as the features, and the result regions are merged to construct the candidate for a number plate if their features are within a certain boundary. Once the candidates for the number plates are generated then their topological relations with other parts of the car such as lights are tested to finally determine the number plate region. The experimental results have shown that the proposed method can be used even for detecting small size number plates where characters are not visible.

A Comparison of EEG and Forearms EMG Activity depend on the Type of Smartphone when Inputting Text Messages (스마트폰 유형에 따른 문자 입력 시 뇌파 및 아래팔 근활성도 비교)

  • Purpose: This study investigated the relationship between smartphone addiction propensities and compare muscle activity of the forearms and brain wave depend on the type of smartphone when inputting text messages. Method: We used an EMG to measure the change in muscle activity by attaching pads to the four muscles in both forearms of all 16 participants. We simultaneously conducted EEG measurements by observing the changes in alpha and beta waves recorded from electrode attached to both ears and the forehead of the participants. The participants had to input a given text using three different types of smartphones for ten minutes each. Result: The comparison of the EMG when inputting text involved a one way analysis of variance and the results showed that the iPad3 was highest for muscle activity followed by GALAXY Note2 and iPhone4. For EEG measurement, a one way analysis of variance was also used and the results showed iPhone4 was higest followed by GALAXY Note2 and finally iPad3 for EEG stress score. Conclusion: The results are thought to be used as reference data for smart phone users.

Development of Railroad Rockfall and Landslide Information System using GIS (GIS를 이용한 철도 연변 낙석, 산사태 정보시스템 개발)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop rail rockfall and landslide information system to manage spatial database using GIS. For this, a spatial database containing information such as railroad, map, topographic analysis, meteorological data, and rockfall has been constructed for 2.5 km or 5 km buffer zone from the Kyungchun, Youngdong, Jungang, Taebak and Jungsun Rairoad where risk of landslide occurrence potential is high. For management of the spatial database, railroad rockfall and landslide information system has been developed. The information system consists of view, table, chart, layout and project environment. The functions provided in the system are data conversion, editing, labeling, zoom in and out, map making, graphic editing, text DB management, charting, on-line help as well as input, retrieve and output of spatial database. The system was developed using ArcView script language Avenue, and consisted of pull-down menus and icons for easy use. The spatial database and the information system can be used to rockfall and landslide management and analysis near the railroad as basic data and tool.

An Efficient XML Query Processing Method using Path Containment Relationships (경로 포함 관계를 이용한 효율적인 XML 질의 처리기법)

  • As XML is a do facto standard for a data exchange language, there have been several researches on efficient processing XML queries. The most important thing to consider when processing XML queries is how efficiently we can process path expressions in queries. Some previous works make results by performing a sequence of join operations on all records corresponding to labels in the path expression. Others works check the existence of paths in the query using an RDBMS's string comparison operator and make results by extracting the records corresponding to the paths. In this paper we suggested a new query planning algorithm based on path containment relationships and two join operators supporting the planning algorithm. The join operators use only the records related to the paths in a query as input data, scan them only once, and generate result data using a pipelining mechanism. By analysis and experiments, we confirmed that our techniques(a new query planning algorithm and two join operators) achieved significantly higher performance than other previous works.

The Effects of Different Display Sizes of Smart Phones to the Task Performance (스마트폰의 화면 크기가 과제 수행도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the usability and user interface of different display sizes for smart phones. For this purpose, two different display sizes and two different operating systems were used. Estimation values and observation values were calculated using the key-stroke level model (KLM) for 11 functional factors. The processing times were decreased when a large display size was used, but this tendency did not have statistical significance. There was no difference in the processing times when different types of operating systems were used. Nevertheless, some character input tasks showed a little shorter processing times with large display size than with an ordinary display size.

  • A cadastral map that is base map on Land Information System is divided by two categories, graphical and digital cadastre. And digital cadastre can be displayed with location coordinates of nodes that depict parcel boundary on digital cadastral records. The transformation of digital cadastral records means that imported text data of node coordinate would be transformed into system data. This study was implemented to search reasons of errors resulted from transformation of graphic data and then to analyze the accuracy in terms of Position and area. For this, checking of software used in Geo-Spatial Information System was implemented at first and it was found that the accuracy is up by using double precision in coordinate transformation. On the position accuracy the errors at nodes was erased during making topology and the errors did not effect other nodes. On the area may the area errors because of being in error limit of allowable area had no problems in using of system.

Readability Enhancement Algorithm for Patterned Retarder based Stereoscopic 3D display (Patterned Retarder 방식 입체 디스플레이에서의 가독성 향상 기법)

  • This paper proposes a readability enhancement filter for Patterned Retarder (PR) display. In general, when some texts in stereoscopic images are shown on PR display, their readability tends to be lowered. In order to overcome this problem, we present a readability enhancement algorithm which consists of readability filtering stage and post-processing stage for specific characters. First, each input stereo image is divided into an odd line image and an even line image. Then, they are independently up-scaled vertically by using Lanczos filter. Next, two up-scaled line images are averaged considering vertical phase difference. In post-processing stage, two specific characters which are normally difficult to read on PR display are detected, and they are filtered for additional readability enhancement. Here, this additional filtering is based on a specific brightness adjustment, and is applied only for two characters. The experiment results show that the proposed method achieves significant improvement in terms of readability in comparison with the previous scheme.

Classification of Climate Zones in South Korea Considering both Air Temperature and Rainfall (기온과 강수특성을 고려한 남한의 기후지역구분)

  • This study aims to classify climate zones using Empirical Orthogonal Function and clustering analyses considering both air temperature and rainfall features in South Korea. When examining climatic characteristics of air temperature and rainfall by seasons, the distribution of air temperature is affected by topography and latitude for all seasons in South Korea. The distribution of rainfall demonstrated that the Yeongdong area, the southern coastal area and Jeju island have higher rainfall while the central area in Gyeongsangbuk-do is the least rainfall area. Clustering analyses of average linkage method and Ward's method was carried out using input variables derived from principal component scores calculated through Empirical Orthogonal Function analysis for air temperature and rainfall. Ward's method showed the best result of classification of climate zones. It was well reflected effects of topography, latitude, sea, the movement of surface pressure systems, and an administrative district.

  • 본 연구의 주제는 텍스트를 어떻게 회화적이미지로 전환시킬 수 있을까?에 대한 것이다. 오늘날 디지털 환경 속에 있는 우리는 이미지 중심의 세계 속에 살고 있다. 과거 텍스트가 해왔던 정보의 생산과 전달 그리고 저장의 역할을 오늘날은 상당부분 이미지가 하게 되었다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 아날로그 방식과 정서는 여전히 우리 곁에 남아있는 것도 사실이다. "Yesterday to Today"는 문자의 최소 단위인 알파벳을 통하여 이미지를 재현하려는 작품이다. 이 작품은 크게 두 가지 Idea로 이루어지는데 하나는 복수개의 실시간 영상 소스를 이용하여 이미지를 구성해내는 것과, 다른 하나는 텍스트에 의한 이미지의 변환이다. 복수개의 실시간 영상 소스는 프로그램이 작동하는 컴퓨터와 직/간접적으로 연결되어 전달되는데, 직접적으로 연결되어 근거리의 특정한 지점으로부터 영상 소스를 받을 수 있고, 또 하나의 방법은 인터넷을 통한하나 이상의 원거리 지점으로부터 보내어지는 영상을 조합하여 받을 수 있다. 프로그램 구현 개념은 픽셀 소스 카메라에서 캡쳐된 최초 이미지를 명도, 색상, 채도로 분류하고, 이것의 각각을 26개의 구간-자판의 개수에 의하여 정해짐-으로 나누고, 다시 그 각각의 구간을 26단계로 나눈다. 이렇게 나누어진 구간들은 알파벳과 1:1로 대응시켜 결과이미지의 해당 부분을 수치대로 재현하도록 프로그램 시킨다. 이미지의 부분들을 지정하기 위하여 특정한 텍스트로부터 알파벳의 빈도수를 조사했는데, 이 조사를 바탕으로 빈도수의 많고 적음에 따라 이미지부분들이 26개 구간으로 정해졌다. 이미지 재현 방법은 사용자가 모니터 위의 Result Image Cam을 통하여 얻고자 하는 이미지를 캡쳐한 후, 특정한 텍스트를 타이핑하면 이미지를 재현할 수 있는데, -입력된 텍스트의 알파벳은 프로그램이 지정한 HSI 컬러 모델의 영역과 1:1로 대응하게 하였다-이 이미지는 특정 장소에 실시간으로 받아진 영상을 데이터화 한 소스에 의하여 만들어진다. 이미지를 재현할 때 텍스트에 따라 알파벳 빈도수는 달라질 수 있으므로 비록 최초 이미지가 동일할지라도 얻고자하는 결과 이미지가 달라진다. 그러므로 사용자는다양한 창조적 경험을 할 수 있다.

  • Computerized map reading system is one of the most important application areas in the image processing.A map databaes can be used for a wide range of scial activities such as narural resource assessment,regional plan-ming,and reaffic nabigation system. The road segments,however,are extracted as briken in the area where they are overlapped and interupted by chracters and symbols.Few approaches have been taken to complete road segnents interupted by map symbols.In this paper,a movel approach for the extracation and completion of road segements interupted by map symbols is proposed using neural networks.The system is applied to 1/25,000 scaled maps published by the Grographical Survey Unstitute of Ministry of Construction of Korea.It will be shown that the system can extract and reconstruct road segmetns for the various areas of maps sucessfully.
