  • This study was to diagnose the ontogenetic ability of drought tolerance in trees, and was to investigate the seasonal changes in tissue-water relations parameters, ${\pi}_o$, ${\pi}_p$, $E_{max}$, $N_s/DW$, $V_o/W_s$ and $RWC_{(tlp)}$, obtained from P-V curves on the Pinus koraiensis and Abies holophylla shoots. The results obtained are as follows; 1) Seasonal changes of original osmotic pressure at maximum turgot, ${\pi}_o$, were -1.2 to -1.6 MPa in Pinus koraiensis and -1.4 to -1.7 MPa in Abies holophylla. 2) Seasonal changes of osmotic pressure at incipient plasmolysis, ${\pi}_p$, were -1.8 to -2.1 MPa in Pinus koraiensis and -1.6 to -2.1 MPa in Abies holophylla. 3) Seasonal changes of relative water content at incipient plasmolysis, $RWC_{(tlp)}$, were 70 to 77% in Pinus koraiensis and 69 to 85% in Abies holophylla. 4) Seasonal changes of maximum bulk modulus of elasticity at maximum hydration, $E_{max}$, were 2.2 to 6.3 MPa in Pinus koraiensis and 3.1 to 7.9 MPa in Abies holophylla. 5) Seasonal changes of number of osmoles of solute in symplasm versus dry weight, $N_s/DW$, were 0.5 to 1.3 in Pinus koraiensis and 0.3 to 1.0 in Abies holophylla. 6) Seasonal changes of original osmotic water volume versus total water volume (symplasmic and apoplastic water), $V_o/W_s$, were 55 to 65%r in Pinus koraiensis and 40 to 65% in Abies holophylla. Consequently, as the comparative values of ${\pi}_o$, ${\pi}_p$, $E_{max}$, $N_s/DW$, $V_o/W_s$, and $RWC_{(tlp)}$, it might be suggested that Abies holophylla shoot could have more or less a greater ability of drought tolerance as compared with Pinus koraiensis shoot.

  • Neuroinflammation is mediated by the activation of microglia and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Therefore, the inhibition of neuroinflammation may be an effective solution to treat these brain disorders. Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis is an insect belonging to the order Coleoptera and inhabits Korea, China, Japan and Siberia. P. brevitarsis seulensis is an edible insect that can be consumed as a protein source for humans. It has been reported that P. brevitarsis seulensis contains useful bioactive substances for hepatoprotection and improving blood circulation, such as indole alkaloids. Microglia cells are the main source of proinflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide (NO) in the central nervous system, which Perform neuroimmune, inflammatory, and other neurobilogical functions. In this study, we investigated the anti-neuroinflammatory effects of P. brevitarsis seulensis ethanol extract (PBE) in activated microglia cells treated with lipopolysaccgarude (LPS, 100 ng/ml). As a result, PBE significantly inhibited NO production without cytotoxicity and decreased the expression levels of inducible NO synthase and cyclooxygenase-2. In addition, the production of inflammatory cytokine secreted by LPS was also reduced by PBE. These results suggest that PBE could be a good source of functional substances to prevent neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

  • Most pruning branches of mulberry, Korean raspberry (bokbunja), and blueberries are discarded without use. These discarded pruning branches were utilized as feed in the investigation of the development and oviposition characteristics of Protaetia brevitarsis with a focus on breeding possibilities. It was observed that the developmental period of P. brevitarsis larvae fed with berry fermented sawdust from mulberry, bokbunja, and blueberry was shortened to 157.3 130.3 days, and 140 days, respectively, compared to 169.3 days for those fed with oak fermented sawdust. The weight and survival rate of the larvae also increased. Under all three types of fermented sawdust feed, the percentage of larvae with weight ≧ 2.5 g during the group was over 60% between 6-8 weeks after hatching; however under oak fermented sawdust feed, it was within 10%, and the percentage only increased after 10 weeks. The average number of eggs laid per female was ≧ 80, with an average oviposition period of approximately 9 weeks; however, there was no significant difference owing to the large deviation per individual. Furthermore, mixed fermented sawdust from the three berries enhanced the growth rate of larvae, and there was no difference in the number of eggs laid compared to those fed with control oak fermented sawdust. Our study demonstrates berry fermentation sawdust is just as effective as oak fermentation sawdust in the breeding of P. brevitarsis.
