  • Monodisperse polymer particles were prepared via one-step seeded polymerization using PMMA seed particles and HDDA (or EGDMA) as crosslinking monomer. For the study, the effects of 1) the ratio of the absorbed monomer or monomer mixture to the seed polymer particles (swelling ratio), 2) the ratio of EGDMA in absorbed monomer mixture, 3) the dosage of initiator, and 4) electro less Ni plating on the variation of mechanical properties of monodisperse polymer particles, such as recovery rate, K-values, breaking strength and breaking displacement, were investigated by using MCT (micro compression test). It was observed that monomer swelling ratio influenced only breaking strength, but EGDMA ratio in monomer mixture, dosage of initiator and electroless Ni plating affected both K-values and breaking strength.

  • Electroless Ni-plating is often utilized in industries due to its physical and mechanical characteristics in contrast to conventional electroplatings. Thus, electroless Ni-plating will be broadly applicated in many fields. However, The physial and mechanical properties of this depositss depend largely on the structure and P content of film and heat treatment. And here discused about the important results of those past research.

  • Thermal barrier efficiency and endurance of coatings in liquid rocket engine combustor were evaluated for air plasma spray coating and electro/electroless plating. The result of firing tests has revealed occasional occurrence of local delamination of $ZrO_2$, NiCrAlY coating obtained by the method of air plasma spray in the region of supersonic flow and it necessitated a new coating method as a substitution. It was found that Ni-Cr coating by means of electro/electroless plating can substitute $ZrO_2$, NiCrAlY coatings of air plasma spray in terms of thermal barrier efficiency and endurance.

  • A metal-coated FBG (fiber Bragg grating) sensor has a memory effect, which can recall the maximum strains experienced by the structure. In this study, a nickel-coated FBG sensor was fabricated through electroless (i.e., chemical plating) and electroplating. A thickness of approximately $43{\mu}m$ of a nickel layer was achieved. Then, we conducted cyclic loading tests for the fabricated nickel-coated FBG sensors to verify their capability to produce residual strains. The results revealed that the residual strain induced by the nickel coating linearly increased with an increase in the maximum strain experienced by the sensor. Therefore, we verified that a nickel-coated FBG sensor has a memory effect. The fabrication methods and the results of the cycle loading test will provide basic information and guidelines in the design of a nickel-coated FBG sensor when it is applied in the development of structural health monitoring techniques.

  • The effluent limit of nickel from electroplating wastewater has been strengthened from 5 mg/L to 3 mg/L from 2014. However, currently applied treatment process for nickel plating wastewater is unable to meet the effluent limit, most of the treatment concept conducted by treatment plant is dilution with other metal bearing wastewater. This can cause very significant impact to the environment of nickel contamination. With this connection, the feasibility test has been conducted with the use of electrolysis by using sacrificial electrodes. Experiments were conducted in synthetic and electroless nickel plating wastewater. Optimal condition of current density, pH were derived from the synthetic wastewater. It was found that the removal efficiency of nickel exceeded 94% at the operation condition of at pH 9 and the current density of $1{\sim}2mA/cm^2$. At this conditions, the iron sludge was generated very low amount. However, it was unsuccessful to meet the effluent limit by applying these treatment conditions to the real electroplating wastewater. This can be explained due to the matrix effect of other metals and anions contained real electroplating wastewater. From the result of further study, the optimal conditions for the real wastewater treatment were found out to be at pH 9, current density $6{\sim}7mA/cm^2$, for 5 minutes of operating time. At these conditions, 88% removal of nickel was achieved, which results the residual nickel concentration was below 3 mg/L.

  • In the study, electroless Ni-plating on flexible ethylene-propylene-diene-monomer (EPDM) rubber sheets for the application of an insert block for shielding electromagnetic interference of multi cable transit (MCT) systems was investigated. Ni crystallinity and adhesion have been found to vary with processing parameters such as pH and temperature of the plating bath. It was shown that Ni-films having the high crystallinity and optimum electric conductivity were obtained on EPDM rubber sheets under pH 7 and 8 at $60{\sim}70^{\circ}C$. The conductive Ni-plated EPDM rubber prepared at pH 7 at $70^{\circ}C$ showed the enhanced adhesion and electric conductivity, and the high electromagnetic interference shielding effect in the 400 MHz~1 GHz range.

  • The electroless nickel plating on high alumina ceramics was performed in the bath containing nickel chloride, sodium hypophosphite and mono- or bi-carboxylic acid as a complexing agent in order to examine the empirical rate law as well as the effects of the complexing agent, plating temperature and pH on the rate of deposition. Adding the carboxylic acid to the plating bath, the rate of deposition was increased considerably, and each of the complexing agents showed a maximum deposition rate plateau around a particular concentration of the complexing agent. The rate of deposition was increased with increasing either temperature or pH, but microstructure of the surface became more rough. Furthermore, empirical rate law of the elecltroless nickel deposition on high alumina ceramics was discussed with the activation energy and other rate parameters calculated.
