  • A computational system to predict flowfield and infrared signature in aircraft exhaust system is developed. As the first step, a virtual mission profile is considered and an engine is selected through a performance analysis. Then a nozzle that meets the requirement of each mission is designed. The internal flow in the exhaustion nozzle at the maximum thrust is analyzed using a state-of-the-art CFD code. In addition, a system to combine information of the skin temperature distribution of the nozzle and after-body surface with an infrared prediction code is developed. Finally, qualitative results for the infrared signature reduction design are obtained by investigating the infrared signature level under various conditions.

  • In this paper, we suggest how to determine the parachute deploy position for accurate landing of a UAV at a desired position. The 9-DOF dynamic modeling of UAV-parachute system is required to construct the proposed algorithm based on neural network nonlinear function approximation technique. The input and output data sets to train the neural network are obtained from simulation results using UAV-parachute 9-DOF model. The input data consist of the deploy position, UAV's velocity, and wind velocity. The output data consist of the cross range and down range of landing positions. So we predict the relative landing position from the current UAV position. The deploy position is then determined through distance compensations for the relative landing positions from the desired landing position. The deploy position is consistently calculated and updated.

  • In this research, the initial sizing of a HALE(High Altitude Long Endurance) UAV which uses solar power and hydrogen fuel cell as an alternative energy was performed. Instead of a wing box type, a glider type was chosen since it is relatively easy to get a data thanks to many researches abroad. Maximum takeoff weight is around 150Kg and the propulsion system is composed of motor, propeller, solar cell, and hydrogen fuel cell which can be recharged through electrolysis. Maximum takeoff weight was estimated as aspect ratio, wing span, wing area change while considering energy balance of required energy which is necessary for flight during the entire day and available energy which can be taken from the solar cell.

  • The effects of various nozzle configurations on infrared signature are investigated for the purpose of analysing the infrared signature level of aircraft propulsion system. A virtual subsonic aircraft is selected and then a circular convergent nozzle, which meets the mission requirements, is designed. Convergent nozzles of different configurations are designed with different geometric profiles. Using a compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier CFD code, an analysis of thermal flow field and nozzle surface temperature distribution is conducted. From the information of plume flow field and nozzle surface temperature distribution, IR signature of plume and nozzle surface is calculated through the narrow-band model and the RadThermIR code. Finally, qualitative information for IR signature reduction is obtained through the analysis of the effects of various nozzle configurations on IR signature.

  • Propeller performance measurement system for high altitude UAV was designed and applied to the wind tunnel test for 2 propeller models with a diameter around 1 m. Mechanical power of the propeller was directly measured by using the torque sensor installed on the rotating axis. The thrust of whole operation body including the propeller was measured by thrust road cell. The guide rail system was suggested to reduce the weight influence of operation body on the thrust road cell. The influence of each measured variables on the aerodynamic coefficients was studied with the repeatability and uncertainty analysis. This analysis result shows that the accuracies of the road cell and the wind velocity were major factors for the thrust coefficient. Propeller performance with typical RPM was measured with various wind speeds and the test results was summarized by performance coefficients for 5 different RPM.

  • The flight controller should meet the flying qualities, stability margins, and time response requirement according to the class of a target aircraft or UAV. Classical design process of PID controller is a very time consuming process and needed trial and erros. The best way is to apply the multi-disciplinary optimization algorithm to meet the numerous constraints of controller requirements. This paper presents how multi-objective parameter optimization (CONDUIT) can be used to determine many design parameters of lateral stability and augmentation system for roll and heading controller of the small UAV. To verify the effectiveness of applying the optimization method, designed controller using optimization are compared with the baseline controller that is designed only considering the time responses.

  • In this paper, vSLAM aided integrated navigation system is implemented and performance analysis of the system is completed via flight test. The system can suppress divergence of position error of INS only system by updating vSLAM correction information when temporary GPS signal outage occurs in bad radio condition. In the flight test, integrated hardware containing GPS, IMU and camera is loaded under RC electric helicopter. Performance of the integrated navigation system is verified by comparing estimated position of INS/vSLAM system with that of INS only system.

  • This paper presents a test development of a Fly-By-Wireless flight control system for a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Fly-By-Wireless system (FBWLS) refers to a system that uses a wireless network instead of a wired network to connect sensors and actuators with a flight control computer (FCC), reducing considerable amount of wires. FBWLS enables to design a much lighter aircraft along with decreased maintenance time and cost. In this research we developed a Zigbee-based FWBLS UAV in which sensors (GPS and AHRS) are wirelessly connected via a FCC to aileron and elevator servo motors. In order to see the effect of time delay due to wireless signal on the flight stability of the UAV, several flight tests were conducted. From the tests, it was confirmed that the effect is minor by comparing the flight response of the FBWLS with the corresponding Fly-By-Wire system.

  • The frequency and risk of disasters are increasing due to environmental and social factors. In order to respond effectively to disasters that occur unexpectedly, it is very important to quickly obtain up-to-date information about target area. It is possible to intuitively judge the situation about the area through the image-map generated at high speed, so that it can cope with disaster quickly and effectively. In this study, we propose an image-map generation and visualization system from UAV images for real-time disaster monitoring. The proposed system consists of aerial segment and ground segment. In the aerial segment, the UAV system acquires the sensory data from digital camera and GPS/IMU sensor. Communication module transmits it to the ground server in real time. In the ground segment, the transmitted sensor data are processed to generate image-maps and the image-maps are visualized on the geo-portal. We conducted experiment to check the accuracy of the image-map using the system. Check points were obtained through ground survey in the data acquisition area. When calculating the difference between adjacent image maps, the relative accuracy was 1.58 m. We confirmed the absolute accuracy of the image map for the position measured from the individual image map. It is confirmed that the map is matched to the existing map with an absolute accuracy of 0.75 m. We confirmed the processing time of each step until the visualization of the image-map. When the image-map was generated with GSD 10 cm, it took 1.67 seconds to visualize. It is expected that the proposed system can be applied to real - time monitoring for disaster response.
