  • International Development Cooperation (IDC hereafter), which closely relates to international trade and foreign direct investment, is gaining global importance regarding diplomatic relations and economic cooperation. As Korea contributes increasing resources to the international community, Korea should play a larger role in the IDC along with increasing academic cooperation, impling more necessity to grow research on the IDC as a crucial element of international trade. The IDC has focused on the provision of basic human needs, such as food, shelter, and clothing. However, higher education has not yet be explored for its effectiveness or validity as to service area including foreign trade or insurance. In this regard, this research aims to review existing IDC literature, to propose a project for insurance education, and to provide alternative ways for future development of the IDC. This paper is structured as follows. First, the literature review begins with the IDC's history and development, review of traditional methods of providing basic human needs (food or sheltering) and public health, importance of job creation and business activities to alleviate poverty, and the introduction of insurance education as a vehicle to reduce poverty. Results of the case study provide implications for service area projects including foreign trade education.

  • Export credit insurance is a policy tool for export growth. In the era of free trade under the governance of WTO, export credit insurance is still allowed as one of the few instruments to increase exports. This paper, using data on short-term export insurance contracts issued to foreign subsidiaries of Korean companies, calculates the expected loss per exposure by combining the effect of risk factors (credit rate of foreign importers, size of mother company, and payment period) on loss frequency and loss severity in different levels. We, applying generalized linear models (GLM), first fit loss frequency and loss severity to negative binomial and lognormal distribution, respectively, and then estimate the loss frequency rate per contract and the ratio of loss severity to coverage amount. Finally, we calculate the expected loss per exposure for each level of risk factors by combining these two rates. Based on the result of statistical analysis, we present the implication for the current premium rate of export insurance.

  • Recently with making of 'The Consumer Insurance (Disclosure and Representations) Act 2012(hereunder CIA)', the UK revised the duty of disclosure especially with the consumer insurance contract. According to the CIA, if the misrepresentation was careless, the insurer may have the three options based upon what the insurer would have done had the consumer taken care to answer the question accurately; a compensatory remedy, avoidance of the insurance contract or, amendment of the contract. I realized that the establishment of CIA has been exposed to pro-actively relieve the breach of Warranty and Disclosure, Representations as far as required by the Global Insurance market. It was found that it is expected to bring significant changes in UK Insurance Act system of the 21st century, and prepares competition from neighboring countries. On the other hand, in the common law system, countries under MIA(1906) are trying to address the breach of warranty and Disclosure, Representations, except the UK cannot completely adhere with a positive attitude.

  • With the fast growing of international trade and ever-changing trade environment Korea is facing more risks in international trade and they are getting more diverse and happen more frequent with high severity. Big firms of international trade are ready and treat the risks quite well, but small and medium size firms have hard time to manage the risks due to their poor understanding, not much capital to spend, and weak skills of risk management. Holding significant size of international trade of Korea, the small and medium size firms need systematic and integrated risk management and the K-sure(former Korea Export Insurance) can make a significant contribution to help them manage risks in international trade business. This study is proposing the adoption of ERM(Enterprise Risk Management) for international trade business of Korea. Especially for small and medium size firms of international trade, the K-sure may set up integrated risk management system to help them and promote the export growth, which is a great mission of K-sure.

  • In the UK's the insurance law 2015, a remedy for breach of warranty in marine insurance was introduced. Also, if the insured proves that breach of warranty in marine insurance does not affect damages, the insurer pays the insurance money to the insured. The UK's marine insurance law has served as the governing law that has been the standard for the marine insurance industry for a long time. Korea and China were heavily influenced by the UK maritime insurance law. Therefore, this study analyzed the cases of breach of warranty in marine insurance in Korea and China. Through this, the insurer avoid the insurance contract for an accident that occurred after the breach of warranty. this result will be different under the new revised insurance law system. With the revision to The Insurance Act 2015, one of the biggest change in the insurance system is that it is possible to remedy of the violations of warranty. However, such a revision of the law requires considerable attention as it also changes the interpretation and judgment of the courts. Accordingly, a practical response of the insurance industry is required. It is necessary to prepare for possible disputes in practice.

  • The purpose of this study aims to the improvement prospect of green insurance industry in Korea. Green insurance includes all classes of general insurance business including unoccupied property insurance and empty building insurance, business insurance, personal insurance, etc. Green policies often cover expensive systems that are not covered under most property policies. The same is true for some underground property, which is also exempted from many property policies. At least insurers already offer products designed to fund rebuilding damaged properties to meet certain environmental and building standards. While the products are in their infancy, insurers and brokers say the huge interest in environmental issues will increase demand. Green buildings that improve energy efficiency and air quality and reduce waste are designed to reduce their effects on the environment and the health of building occupants. Buildings account for 39% of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions, according to the Department of Energy. Insurers say that, as sustainable buildings become more common, green insurance will become more popular and some of its features might become a standard part of property policies.
