  • The most of original horizontal bearing capacity theory of the pile is not efficiently to consider interaction between soil and pile because it is only to consider the earth pressure theory and separately the ground form pile. In recent, in order to improve the pile technology, it is necessary to confirm the real behaviour characteristics of pile under lateral load. Hence, to evaluate the behaviour characteristics of the single and group pile under lateral loads using the strain wedge model that could consider the interaction between soil and piles. Primarily, laboratory scale down model tests was carried out to predict the behaviour characteristics on real size piles using the strain wedge model. The comparative analyses between model test and numerical analysis for the evaluation of whole behaviour were conducted.

  • Bucket foundations, which are used in the foundations of offshore wind turbines, should be able to withstand large amounts of horizontal and moment loads. Tripod bucket foundation, which combines three single buckets, has been used to increase horizontal and moment capacities. This study performed numerical analysis using ABAQUS (2010), to analyze the group effect and the bearing capacity of a tripod bucket in clay. Parametric studies were performed varying the bucket spacing ratio S/D (S=spacing between the centers of the bucket and the tower; D=diameter of the bucket) and depth ratio L/D (L=embedded length of skirt). The applied constitutive models were a linear elastic perfectly plastic model with Tresca yield criteria for normally consolidated clay and an elastic model for buckets. Loading in the vertical, horizontal, and moment directions was simulated with an increase in each movement at a reference point. The bearing behavior and the capacities of a single and a tripod bucket were compared. Capacity evaluation method of the tripod bucket was suggested using the capacity of a single bucket.

  • The p-y curve has been used to design pile foundations subjected to lateral loading. Although the p-y curve has a large influence on the pile lateral behavior, p-y curves have not been clearly suggested. In this study, the p-y curve of clay was evaluated for drilled shafts in marine deposits by using 3-dimensional numerical analyses. First, the optimization study was performed to properly determine boundary extent, mesh size, and interface stiffness. The numerical modeling in the study was verified by comparing the calculated and the pile loading test results. Then, the p-y curves of single and group piles were evaluated from the parametric study. The selected parameters were pile diameter, pile Young's modulus and pile head fixed condition for a single pile, and pile spacing for group piles. Finally, the p-multiplier was evaluated by comparing the p-y curves of a single pile and group piles. As a result, the p-multiplier at pile spacing of 3D was 0.83, 0.67 and 0.78 for the front, middle, and back row piles, respectively, and showed values similar to those of O'Neill and Reese (1999). For the pile group with pile spacing larger than 60, the group effect can be ignorable.

  • Many transmission towers, high-rise buildings and bridges are constructed near steep slopes and are supported by large-diameter piles. These structures may be subjected to large lateral loads, such as violent winds and earthquakes. Widely used types of foundations for these structures are pier foundations, which have large-diameters with high stiffness. The behavior of a pier foundation subjected to lateral loads is similar to that of a short rigid pile because both elements seem to fail by rotation developing passive resistance on opposite faces above and below the rotation point, unlike the behavior of a long flexible pile. This paper describes the results of several numerical studies performed with a three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) of model tests of a laterally loaded short pile located near slopes, respectively. In this paper, the results of model tests of single piles and pile groups subjected to lateral loading, in homogeneous sand with 30$^{\circ}$ slopes and horizontal ground were analyzed by the 3-D FE analyses. The pile was assumed to be linearly elastic. The sand was assumed to have non-associative characteristics, following the MC-DP model. The failure criterion is governed by the Mohr-Coulomb equation and the plastic potential is given by the Drucker-Prager equation. The main purpose of this paper is the validation of the 3-D elasto-plastic FEM by comparisons with the experimental data.

  • In this study, we investigated the reinforcing effects of waveform micropiles in a stratigraphic setting comprising buried soil, weathered soil, and weathered rock. We conducted a series of field load tests and determined that waveform micropiles exhibited sufficient bearing capacity through frictional resistance in the soil layer and demonstrated favorable constructability in conditions with deep bedrock layers. Moreover, the vertical stiffness of waveform micropiles was approximately 2.2 times higher than that of conventional micropiles when subjected to the same design load. Pile group load tests comprising conventional and waveform micropiles showed that micropiles with higher stiffness carried a greater proportion of the load. Although there was no significant difference in the bearing capacity between conventional and waveform micropiles under the same design load, waveform micropiles with higher stiffness showed a load-carrying capacity 1.7 to 3.2 times greater than that of conventional micropiles. These findings suggest that waveform micropiles can be effectively used for foundation reinforcement and reduce the risk of foundation failure when increased loads due to modifications such as expansion remodeling are expected.

  • In this study, the resilient modulus test and Light Weight Deflectormeter (LWD) test were conducted to simulate the moving vehicle load for the evaluation of the internal failure of epoxy asphalt pavement. The Measured displacement in the resilient modulus test of epoxy asphalt concrete showed very little residual deformation under repeated loads unlike the conventional asphalt. Therefore, the test results were evaluated as a normal state due to its similarity with elastic deformation. The deflection results from the resilient modulus tests were converted to the surface deflection modulus and the normal range of surface deflection modulus was estimated applying LWD measurement of 1 SIGMA level. Internal failure of pavements were estimated using the suspicious failure range at $60^{\circ}C$ and hysteresis. Internal moisture penetration and a decrease in bonding were observed in partial areas at $140{\mu}m$ of surface deflection. However, the areas showed inflection points in the hysteresis. Field investigation by suggested criterion indicated a high degree of accuracy.

  • In this study, a complex behavior connector is proposed to overcome the problems that may occur when small pile pipe and micro pile is used as a friction pile concept in the lower foundation of an oil sand plant where a piloti foundation is used. The individual settlement and heaving of piles were connected in one group to allow the composite behavior. This study performed to analyze the load carrying capacity to identify a complex behavior. In addition, the shape of the composite behavior connector was examined to apply the advantages of pile-group and piled raft foundations to oil sand plants. A scale model was constructed to measure the behavior of the load. The stability and weakness of the device were selected to determine the shape of the connector using the scale model testing.

  • Long span structures with low natural frequencies such as shopping malls, large offices, and assembly rooms may experience signification dynamic responses due to human activities. In this study, equations to estimate the magnitudes of group walking loads are derived and a simple procedure to estimate and evaluate the corresponding response of the existing and new building structures subjected to human loads is proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified analytically using a simple floor and experimentally on a footbridge measuring the structural response induced by group pedestrians. Results indicate that the amplitudes of group walking loads can be easily estimated if the mode shapes are available, and that the corresponding structural responses can be estimated easily by the simple response measurement using the proposed method.
