  • The study was conducted to investigate the effects of organic fertilizers and mulches on the growth and $CO_2$ assimilation in MM.106 apple trees. Growth and $CO_2$ assimilation of MM.106 apple trees grown in a greenhouse were affected by the nutrient concentrations and carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) ratio in the raw materials of organic fertilizers and mulches. The optimum C:N ratios, which makes microorganism convert the organic N into the inorganic N, were obtained in the organic fertilizer, poultry litter, green compost, and grass clippings, resulting in increasing single shoot height, SPAD, and $CO_2$ assimilation. The SPAD and $CO_2$ assimilation were affected by the treatments 5 weeks after the treatments, and then the tree growth was affected by the treatments 6 weeks later. The most efficient tree growth and development were observed in the 10 to $15\;mg{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ of the inorganic N in a soil, and the N was strongly related to the tree growth and development.

(McGlathery et al. 1996). • The characteristics of nitrogen mineralization in upland soil was studied with 27-week incubation at $25^{\circ}C$. The used soils in this experiment were received six kinds of livestock manure compost each year for four years. Six different composts, which were chicken (CHM), pig (PIM), and cow (COM) manure composted without bulking agent, and chicken (CHMS), pig (PIMS), and cow (COMS) manure composted with sawdust as a bulking agent, were selected for this study. The first-order model was fit to the observed mineral nitrogen (N) vs incubation days using a non-linear regression procedure. The soil potential for N mineralization (No) of manure compost (CHM, PIM, and COM) treated soils were higher than those of the manure-sawdust compost (CHMS, PIMS, and COMS) treated soils. The No value of PIM applied soil was 15.0 mg 100 $g^{-1}$, which was the highest value among the treatments. The amount of N mineralized in compost applied soils ranged from 8.1% to 11.9% of the total N content in soils and increased with increasing total N content in soils. The organic matter content in compost applied soils were negatively correlated with No value (r = $-0.69^*$). Therefore, our result indicated that determination of N application rate in livestock manure compost applied soil should be based on total nitrogen content better than soil organic matter content.

  • The effect of inorganic, organic nitrogen sources and amino acids on the coenzyme $Q_{10}$ production and coenzyme $Q_{10}$ component ratio was investigated. Among the nine organic nitrogen sources, CSP showed a remarkable enhancing effect on the production of coenzyme $Q_{10}$. But this enhancement was not observed in medium containing Bacto peptone, tryptone, casamino acid and soybean meal. These differences on the production of coenzyme $Q_{10}$ may be due to differences in kinds and amounts of component amino acids and peptides in the various organic nitrogen sources tested. In the addition of inorganic nitrogens, only $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ increase the coenzyme $Q_{10}$ production by 2.0 times compare to the control group. The addition of L-tyrosine to the medium containing Bacto tryptone, was also determined to be crucial for the coenzyme $Q_{10}$ production. But phenylalanin and tryptophan, other aromatic amino acids, had no stimulatory effect on the coenzyme $Q_{10}$ production. These results show that the production and components ratio of coenzyme $Q_{10}$ was greatly affected by the kinds and the concentration of inorganic, organic nitrogen sources as well as amino acids.

  • Winter annual green manure crops may be an effective tool for environmental-friendly agriculture system. The effect of legume (hairy vetch), non-legume (rye) and N fertilization ($190kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$) was examined and compared on red-pepper yield, nitrogen uptake, carbohydrate composition, and soil N and C contents. We monitored soil N and C for 120 days after incorporation (DAI) of green manures or mineral fertilizer. The mineralization of nitrogen reached the maximum around 30 DAI. The amount of inorganic nitrogen supplied by mineralization of hairy vetch residue was greater with than chemical N or rye. Photosynthetic rate was similar by 70 DAT in all treatments however, it in rye-incorporated red-pepper presented a sharp decline at later growth period. Leaf total nitrogen was greater with hairy vetch and chemical N than rye throughout the experiment. The soluble sugar increased steadily in all treatments from 40 to 110 days after transplanting (DAT) whereas starch showed a tendency of great decrease. Hairy vetch greatly promoted red-pepper growth by the later period however, chemical N showed the highest fruit yields.

  • BACKGROUND: Burcucumber(Sicyos angulatus L.) is an invasive plant species and disturbs ecosystems in Korea. The main method for prevention of burcucumber is cutting or pulling out. However, the studies accounting for the use of the by-product of burcucumber after cutting remain incomplete. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the applicability of burcucumber as a substitute for nitrogen fertilizer.METHODS AND RESULTS: Burcucmber plants only including stem, leaves, and petiole were collected from the Sky Park in Seoul and divided in to three categories based on the length of stem of burcucumber; 10-30 cm, 30-100 cm, and 100-200 cm. And they were input into soil with 20 kg-N/10 a. After 4 weeks aging, chemical properties of treated soils and the productivity of lettuce(Lactuca sativa L.) were examined. Both the inorganic nitrogen contents in soils and the growth of lettuce were increased with the decreases in length of burcucumber standing for young plant. And the inorganic nitrogen content and the productivity of lettuce were positively correlated(r= 0.9409).CONCLUSION: The C/N ratio of burcucumber was low, indicating fast decomposition and nitrogen supplying rate, resulting in the increase in lettuce growth. Burcucumber could be a good substitute for nitrogen organic fertilizer.

  • Fifty-five field experiments were conducted in order to find out some useful indices for the prediction of N-supplying capability(NSC) of soils under cultivation of corn in Pennsylvania over 3 years from 1986. Contents of $NO_3-N$, absorbance at 200 nm of the extract from soil with 0.01M $NaHCO_3$ were identified to be used as indices before planting. Methods for the estimation of organic nitrogen available later in the growing season(KCLA-N, PBBA-N, UV260 nm absorbance of $NaHCO_3$ extract) were not to be used as good indices individually, but when those are combined together with inorganic $NO_3-N$ showed a highly significant correlationship with the NSC. The year of an even distribution of rainfall, 1987, gave the highest significant correlationship between NSC and the indices. For soils of the same texture with slightly different physical properties, combined indices obtained from physico-chemical factors improved the degree of predictability when the grades of soil slope, depth of Ap were considered at the same time. More futher researches such as this need to be done before any conclusive result can be drawn.

  • The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effects of applying time of cattle slurry and fertilizing added mineral nitrogen on dry matter yield of orchardgrass and also to estimate proper levels of fertilizing nitrogen when idled arable land rapidly increased these days, which was used for the production of Orchardgrass. The results were as follows. 1. The annual yields of dry matter were produced 5.62~6.67 ton per ha when cattle slurry applied at rates of $30m^3$(average mineral fertilizer equivalent to 120kg) per ha in different dressing times. Those were higher 0.60~1.65 ton or 0.16 ton per ha than the yields from non-fertilizing or phosphrous and potassium fertilizing. 2. Relative yields of annual dry matter from mineral nitrogen fertilization of 120kg per ha were 142~146% in comparsion with control plots(cattle slurry plot or phosphrous and potassium plot). On the other hand, those of cattle slurry application were 112~133% in comparion with non-fertilizing plot. 3. The efficiencies of nitrogen on dry matter yield(kg DM/kg N) were 5.0~13.8 DM kg/N kg when cattle slurry applied to Orchardgrass at rates of $30m^3$(average mineral fertilizer equivalent to 120kg) per ha, and were 21.3~23.1kg DM/kg N at the same level fertilization of mineral nitrogen. 4. On the condition of this study, mineral nitrogen were fertilized after applying cattle slurry at rates of $30m^3$(average mineral fertilizer equivalent to 120kg) per ha in order to minimize chemical fertilizer and increase the potential production of Orchardgrass. At this situation, marginal dry matter yields of 8.48~8.63 ton per ha were obtained as the level of economic even point goint when mineral nitrogen fertilization is between 119.4 and 133.3kg per ha. It was possible to obtain the maximal dry matter yield(8.98 tons/ha) with fertilization of 202.8kg N/ha.

  • To determine the optimum application of fertilizers for the cultivation of tomato in plastic film house, eighteen soils which contained different salt contents were taken from four different areas under plastic film house cultivation, Youngdong, Boeun, Cheongweon county, and Cheongju city. The dry weight and the amount of N, P, and K uptakes of tomato in the plot with no fertilization were considered as the factors representing the fertility of the soil. The differences in the dry weight and in the amounts of N, P, and K uptakes of plants between the plots with fertilization and with no fertilization were considered as the factors representing the total effect of fertilizer and the effects of fertilizer N, P, and K, respectively. These factors of soil fertility and fertilizer effects were estimated by correlation and regression with the chemical properties of the soil in order to find the critical levels and recommended method for optimum fertilization of tomato. The standardized partial regression coefficients of inorganic nitrogen ($NO_3-N+NH_4-N$) contents in soil for the factors of fertility ranged from 247 to 1,159, showing the best, while those of the others ranged from 0.02 to 4.02. Those of inorganic nitrogen ($NO_3-N+NH_4-N$) contents in soil for the electrical conductivity were also the best and were ranged from 35.2 to 36.0 compared with the values of less than 1.0 of the others. These results demonstrate that the content of inorganic nitrogen in the soil is the best index for both soil fertility and electrical conductivity of the soil. The critical level of inorganic nitrogen ($NO_3-N+NH_4-N$) in the soil for maximum productivity with zero value of fertilizer effects for tomato, estimated through Cate-Nelson split method was $220mg\;kg^{-1}$. This was the same value as evaluation for the cultivation of chinese cabbage. In conclusion, for optimal application of fertilizer in plastic film house, 1) no fertilization is recommended when the contents of inorganic nitrogen in the soil is more than $220mg\;kg^{-1}$; however, 2) in the case of less than $220mg\;kg^{-1}$ of inorganic nitrogen content in the soil, the optimal level of fertilization could be estimated through the regression equation between fertilizer effects and content of inorganic nitrogen in the soil.

  • To examine the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization on soil nitrogen (N) mineralization, we monitored rates of soil nitrogen mineralization and nitrification in 41-year-old pitch pine (Pinus rigida Mill.) and Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi Gordon) stands growing on similar soil condition in central Korea. For this study, we used the buried-bag incubation method. Fertilizers were applied at three levels [control (C), 200 N kg/ha+25 P kg/ha (LNP), and 400 N kg/ha+50 P kg/ha(HNP)] on 5 June, 1996. Mineral soils (0~20 cm) were incubated 6 times with 45-day-interval from 5 June 1996 to 4 June 1997. Initial soil moisture contents were significantly different among sampling dates and between tree species. Initial soil moisture contents were 32% for C, 28% for LNP, and 26% for HNP at the P. rigida stand, and 31% for C, 31% for LNP, and 33% for HNP at the L. kaempferi stand, respectively. Mean daily N mineralization rates were significantly different among sampling dates and treatments. Annual net N mineralization and nitrification were also significantly different between the two tree species. The annual net N mineralization was 10.6 kg/ha/year for C, 23.3 kg/ha/year for LNP and 6.6 kg/ha/year for HNP at the P. rigida stand, and 2.0 kg/ha/year for C, 12.1 kg/ha/year for LNP and 16.7 kg/ha/year for HNP at the L. kaempferi stand. The annual nitrification was 2.8 kg/ha/year for C, 7.6 kg/ha/year for LNP and 4.3 kg/ha/year for HNP at the P. rigida stand, and 4.3 kg/ha/year for C, 14.8 kg/ha/year for LNP and 6.6 kg/ha/year for HNP at the L. kaempferi stand. The ratios of annual net nitrification to annual net N mineralization were 26% for C, 33% for LNP, 65% for HNP at the P. rigida stand, and 100% for C, 100% for LNP, 40% for HNP at the L. kaempferi stand, respectively. This study indicates that N mineralization in forest may be different by the predominant tree species and fertilization even under similar environments. It is likely that the quality of organic matter might control nitrogen mineralization and nitrification in soils.
