Three species of Chenopodiaceae, i.e. Suaeda japonica, Salicomia herbacea, Beta vulgaris var. cicla, were investigated to compare the physiological characteristics through inoic balances and osmoregulations under different environmental salt gradients. Plats were harvested in two weeks from treatments with salt gradients (0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mM NaCl) and mineral nutrition gradients(1/1, 1/5, 1/10 dilutions of Hoagland solution). Plants were analyzed for growth responses, ionic balances, osmolalities, conductivities, glycinebetaine and proline contents quantitatively. Three plants of Chenopodiaceae accumulated slats into tissues unlike some salt sensitive species, and showed unique adaptation patterns to overcome saline environments, i.e. strong growth stimulation for Salicomia herbacea, growth negative tolerance for Suaeda japonica, and growth positive tolerance for Beta vulgaris var. cicla. The absorption of inorganic Ca/sup 2+/ ions was inhibited remarkably due to the excess uptake of Na+ with increasing salinity. The K+ content in plants was significantly reduced with increasing salinity. Total nitrogen content was reduced as mineral nutritions and salinity increased. Conductivity and osmolality increased with increasing salinity regardless of mineral nutritions. The ranges of glycinebetaine and proline contents were 0.2∼2.5 μM/g plant water and 0.1∼0.6μM/g plant water, respectively.
This research was conducted to determine the amount of water absorbed by a polyacrylamide hydrogel such as Stocksorb C (STSB), effect of salts on inhibition in hydration of STSB, and the hydrogel effects on changes of nutrient concentration in external solution. Absorption of deionized water by STSB reached a maximum of 180 $mL{\cdot}g^{-1}$. Monovalent soluble salts such as $KH_2PO_4,\;KNO_3$, and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ reduced absorption of the hydrogel, but the degrees of inhibition in absorption were similar in three kinds of salts. Twenty milliequivalents per liter of $Ca_{2+}\;or\;Mg_{2+}$ reduced water absorption of STSB to $14\%$ compared to those of deionized water. Solution absorption was consistently lower in the presence of divalent cations than in the presence of the monovalent cations. But the absorption was unaffected by the uncharged salt such as urea in all concentrations tested. The final $K^+\;and\;NH_4^+-N$ concentrations of the solution remaining after absorption by STSB was higher than those of the initial solution. The soaking of STSB to full strength of Hoagland solution resulted in increase of $NO_3^--N,\;H_2PO_4^-\;and\;SO_4^{2-}$ concentrations in external solution compared to initial solution, reaching 5,300, 250 and 1,500 $mL{\cdot}g^{-1}$, respectively, at 24 hrs after soaking.
In this study, we performed an analysis of the accumulation of inorganic arsenic and growth rate with changes in phosphate concentration in Hizikia fusiforme. When exposed to inorganic arsenic for fourteen days, we found that the collection of inorganic arsenic hardly increased at high phosphate concentrations (2 mg L-1). However, when the phosphate concentration was low (0.02 mg L-1), accumulation of inorganic arsenic increased. Additionally, H. fusiforme decreased in a growth rate of 14.5% in low phosphate concentration (0.02 mg L-1) and fell in a growth rate of 30% when exposed to inorganic arsenic (10 ㎍ L-1). H. fusiforme cannot distinguish between phosphate and inorganic arsenic. Thus, when phosphate concentration was lower, the inorganic arsenic accumulation increased, and accumulated inorganic arsenic inhibited photosynthesis and cell division, reducing the growth rate. H. fusiforme is known to have higher inorganic arsenic accumulation than other seaweeds. Therefore, various studies are needed to secure the food safety of H. fusiforme which is an essential aquaculture species in Korea.

This research was carried out to investigate the plant growth, inorganic ion and amino acid content characteristics in a halophyte, Suaeda glauca, under different NaCl concentrations for cultivating in the reclaimed land. S. glauca was hydroponically cultivated under 0, 50, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mM NaCl concentrations with Hogland's nutrient solution. To evaluate growth response under different NaCl concentrations, plant height and number of branches, dry weight, Fv/Fm value, and photosynthetic efficiency were investigated. To find out physiological characteristic, inorganic ion contents and amino acids in the plant were evaluated. The optimum concentration of NaCl for plant growth were 50 mM. The plant growth were gradually decreased in the concentration ranged from 100 to 400 mM. As increasing of NaCl concentration, Na ion was increased, but K, Ca, Mg ions were decreased in the plant. The amino acid contents were varied due to NaCl concentrations, but most of amino acids content in total plant was the lowest at 50 mM. Conversely, proline was exceptionally high at 50 mM of NaCl concentration. The Fv/Fm value was the highest at 50 mM of NaCl concentration. From these results, the optimum salt concentration for the growth of S. glauca was 50 mM, but the plant seems to adapt in a variety of salt environments in view of the change of ions and amino acids depending on salt concentration and the maintenance of photosynthetic efficiency even under high salt condition.

In respect of the nutrients cycling in coastal environment, regeneration in bottom layer is one of major source of nutrients. We analyzed the bottom water quality at the 14 stations during 9 years from 2004 to 2012 to investigate the characteristics of nutrients at bottom layer in Jinhae Bay. Concentrations of DIN, DIP and DSi showed the large seasonal variation and were higher in summer. Especially, average concentrations of these nutrients were two times higher in hypoxic season than in normoxic season. In summer, high concentrations of DIN, DIP and DSi caused by regeneration were common feature, but spatial distribution of DSi differ from that of DIN and DIP. DIN and DIP were higher in Masan Bay, while DSi was higher in Masan Bay as well as in center of Jinhae Bay. In comparison with DIN and DIP, DSi was significantly affected by nutrients regeneration at bottom layer in whole season. According to time series analysis, DIN concentration was decreased from approximately $14{\mu}M$ to $6{\mu}M$. This result induce that Si:N ratio at bottom layer in Jinhae Bay changed from approximately 1 to 3.

Plants were harvested in two weeks from treatments with salt gradients(0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mM NaCl) and mineral nutrition gradients(1/1, l/5, 1/10 dilutions of Hoagland solution). Plants were analyzed for growth responses, ionic balances, osmolalities, conductivities, glycinebetaine and proline contents quantitatively. Three plants of Chenopodiaceae accumulated salts into tissues unlike some salt sensitive species, and showed unique adaptation patterns to overcome saline environments, i.e. strong growth stimulation for Salicomia herbacea, growth negative tolerance for Suaeda japonica, and growth positive tolerance for Beta vulgaris var cicla. Shoot tip explants from germinated seeds of Alnus hirsuta were cultured on NT (Nagata and Takebe, 1971) mineral salts medium supplemented with 6% glucose, MS (Murashige and Skoog, 1962) vitamin mixture, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and $0-50\;\mu\textrm{M}$ 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). Five $\mu\textrm{M}$ BAP was found to give the highest shoot multiplication rate. Accordingly about 200 shoots were obtained for further experiments by multiplying shoots on this medium for 4-5 months. Regardless of carbon sources, NT mineral medium produced 3-12 times of shoots than MS mineral medium did. On NT mineral medium, 3% sucrose, 3% glucose and 6% glucose yielded no significant differences. It was observed that media consisting of 1/4-1/2 strength NT mineral salts, 3% sucrose and $1-8\;\mu\textrm{M}$ IBA produced about 100% rooting rate. Almost 100% of the resulting plantlets survived after transfer to the soil by decreasing humidity stepwise.epwise.
Growth, inorganic solutes and glycine betaine accumulation in spinach beet (Beta vulgaris var. cicla L.) were studied under different salt conditions. Plants of fortythree days old were assessed by growing for a further 10 and 20 days at four NaCl concentrations (0, 100, 200, 300 & 400 mM). The dry weight of leaves was maximal in plants which were grown at 100 to 200 mM NaCl treatments and after 10d it was decreased slightly at salt treatments of more than 300 mM NaCl. Under the salt conditions, leaves of B. vulgaris contained high inorganic ions to maintain low water potential, but low water soluble carbohydrate contents. Total ionic content and osmolality increased with increasing salt concentration. Salt stress led to a preferential accumulation of glycine betaine in leaves of B. vulgaris, especially for the 200 mM NaCl treatment. These findings suggest that a high degree of NaCl tolerance of B. vulgaris resulted from the accumulation of glycine betaine, which is known to have osmoprotectant properties in the cytoplasm.
This study was conducted to investigate the growth and physiologycal activitis of Aruncus dioicus var. kamtschaticus (Maxim.) H. Hara under the NaCl treatment conditions (0, 100, 200, 300 mM). After 30 days treatment, the growth and physiologycal activitis were investigated. In the growth of plants, the plant height, leaf width, leaf length and ion level were reduced at NaCl treatments of more than 100 mM. The total polyphenol content was decreased by NaCl in a concentration-dependent manner compared to the control group. The contents of total flavonoids did not show any difference at the concentration of 200 mM and 300 mM. However, the content of total flavonoid decreased compared with that of control. In antioxidant activity, the DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity and reducing power activity were decreased by NaCl concentration compared to the control. When changes in the content of NO production was monitored by ELISA, production inhibitory effect was 94.5%, 70%, 63%, 56.9% in NaCl concentration of 0, 100, 200, 300 mM, respectively. The growth, ion level, antioxidant and anti-inflammation activity of Aruncus dioicus var. kamtschaticus was reduced at NaCl treatments of more than 100 mM.
In order to see the seasonal variation of nutrients and the limiting factors to the primary production in Deukryang Bay, both dissolved inorganic nutrients and salinity were measured in the surface waters during the periods from July 1992 to March 1993. The mean value of salinity was the lowest in ?all and the highest in early spring. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) was the highest in winter and the lowest in summer. However, both phosphate and silicate were the highest in summer and the lowest in fall. Salinity was generally higher in the outer region than in the inner region of the bay.DIN content was nearly depleted (less than $2{\mu}M$) in summer. From fall to spring, DIN content was nearly depleted in the inner region and relatively high in the outer region of the Day. Phosphate was the highest in summer showing an opposite distribution pattern to salinity, and it was nearly depleted (less than $0.1{\mu}M$) in fall and winter. In spring, however, phosphate content was slightly high in the outer region. Silicate content showed an opposite distribution pattern to salinity in summer. in other seasons, However, the distribution pattern of silicate was similar to the salinity. DIN seemed to be a limiting factor for the primary production at all area of the bay in summer and at the inner region in other season. However, phosphate seemed to be a limiting factor at all area of the bay in fall and winter and at the inner region in spring. Silicate may limit the production of diatoms at the inner region of the bay in winter and spying. Both phosphate and silicate showed a good inverse relationship with salinity in summer, which indicates inputs of these nutrients from the freshwater runoff. In the other seasons, both nitrate and silicate showed a positive linear relationship with salinity in the outer region of the bay, suggesting that these two nutrients were mainly supplied by the inflow of the offshore costal water which had high nitrate content associated with vertical mixing.
