  • The fixation characteristics of CCA and CCFZ in Japanese red pine, Japanese larch, and ezo spruce sapwood were compared at various temperatures and fixation conditions (drying and nondrying fixation). Fixation was monitored by the rates of reduction of hexavalent chromium to trivalent one, and optimal fixation time was estimated based on the results. The rate of fixation was highly temperature dependent, and the fixation rate of treated wood conditioned under nondrying conditions was much more faster than that under drying conditions, especially when the moisture content of treated wood was below fiber saturation point. Preservative types affected fixation; CCA-Type B had the highest fixation rate, followed by CCA-Type C and then CCFZ. The differences in fixation rates of preservative components were also observed among wood species; Japanese red pine fixed the fastest, followed by Japanese larch and then ezo spruce. Time required to complete fixation according to the fixation temperature could be predicted successfully using the regression equations between the temperatures and fixation time, regardless of conditioning methods, preservative types, and wood species.

  • The ultraviolet absorption spectra of AcBr lignin (Acetyl Bromide lignin) from 10 species grown in Mt. Jiri were determined. There were 3 peak positions, at 249nm (max peak), at 267-268 nm (shallow min. peak) and at 280 nm (lower max. peak). The Bjorkman lignin and lignin sulfonic acid spectra had shoulders, but the AcBr lignin had not them. Average absorbances and absorptivities of the AcBr lignins at peak positions were $0.367{\pm}0.0015$, $24.56{\pm}0.0535$, at 249 nm, $0.278{\pm}0.0016$, $18.50{\pm}0.0569$, at 267-268 nm and $0.306{\pm}0.0016$, $20.42{\pm}0.0627$ at 280 nm, respectively.

  • In this study, it was examined the characteristics of bending property of red pine(Pinus densiflora S, et Z.) related to slope of grain. At first, we have investigated the characteristics of wood species for bending property. At second, it was examined the relationships between grain angle and its related bending property. Specimens were made following to grain angle $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, respectively. Dimension of wood materials was $10mm(T){\times}20mm(R){\times}350mm(L)$. Microwave irradiation time for bending process was 30, 60, 90, 120 seconds. The result of this study were as follows ; 1. Grain angle of wood was closely related to Young's modulus on bending process. In the process of bending with various grain angle, wood bending was easily proceed on the high grain angle range. 2. However, the strength of bent wood was very weak when the grain angle was high. Therefore, it was considered suitable grain angle for bending was existed. 3. The characteristics of wood properties for wood bending were very different among wood species.

  • The initiation and cessation of cambial activities were investigated to find out the growth characteristics of the major species growing in Chuncheon, Korea. The division of cambial zone in Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis began from the middle of March through the end of March. The activity of cambial zone in P. densiflora and P. koraiensis was vigorous from the end of May through the middle of July. During this period the number of cells increased rapidly in radial direction. However, the number of cells in P. densiflora was gradually increased. The division of cambial zone in ring-porous wood, such as Quercus mongolica and Robinia pseudoacacia began in the middle of March, before the formation of vessel. The division of cambial zone in diffuse-porous wood, such as Cornus controversa and Prunus sargentii, began in early April, and then the formation of vessels began after one to three weeks. It was considered that the cambial zone in softwood was ceased from the beginning of November, whereas cambial activities in hardwood ceased in the middle of October. Consequently, the formation of growth ring was different among the species, even though the trees were grown under the same conditions.

  • Species of the pillars in the 4 different buildings(Sudaridjang, Beopbojeon, Dongsaganjang, Seosaganjang) in which Tripitaka Koreana wood blocks are conserved were identified. 1. In 114 pillars, including 6 partially piled-up pillars, 73(64%) was Zelkova serrata, 17(14.9%) was Pinus koraiensis, 16(14%) was Pinus densiflora, 5(4.4%) was Abies holophylla, 2(1.8%) was Quercus sp., and 1(0.9%) was Pinus rigida. 2. The pillars from Sudarajang were consist of various species such as Pinus densiflora, Pinus Koraiensis, Abies holophylla, Quercus sp., and Zelkova serrata, whereas all 47 out of 48 pillars from Beopbojeon were consist of only one species-Zelkova serrata. 3. We can be inferred from the characteristics of the identified species that Beopbojeon whose pillars are made of only Zelkova serrata was built at least before the mid-Koryo dynasty followed by Sudarajang, but Dongsaganjang and Seosaganjang might be built far later than that time.

  • The characteristic changes in weight, moisture content, and dimension at the early adsorptiondesorption stage of PEG-treated Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis), Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi), mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica) and sargent cherry (Prunus sargentii) woods were investigated. The wood samples were treated with PEG 1000, 2000 and 4000, and conditioned at the relative 98%, 65% and 20% for humidities of one week. The weight of Korean pine, Japanese larch and sargent cherry woods treated with PEG 1000 and 2000 during the adsorption-desorption was significantly changed, but mongolian oak was slightly changed. Moisture content was highly Moisture content was highly fluctuated by the change of relative humidity in the three species except oak wood. Although the weight of PEG-treated wood; however, changes in dimension could be prevented by PEG treatment in all species tested.

  • Ribbed birch (Betula costata Trautv.), Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi (Lamb.) Carr.), and tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera L.), were used as experimental specimens to measure the sound absorption coefficient with various resonator types, regular resonator (Type-R), eccentric resonator (Type-E), aligned resonator (Type-A), and screwed resonator (Type-S). Resonators consisted of the simple perforation by hand drilling. Sound absorption performances of the resonators installed perforations were better than those of untreated specimens. They were varied with the resonator's type and wood species. Increased area by a wood screw gave no significant change on the sound absorption.
