  • In this study, several properties of mortars made with calcium aluminate cement (CAC) such as hydrated products, strength characteristics, absorption, surface electric resistivity and chloride ions penetration resistance were experimentally investigated. The properties of CAC mortars were compared to those of ordinary portland cement (OPC) mortars. From the test results, it was found that the main hydrated products for CAC mortars were of $C_2AH_8$ and $CAH_{10}$, while CH, ettringite and calcite for OPC mortars. The surface electric resistivity and chloride ions penetration resistance of CAC mortars were significantly beneficial compared to those of OPC mortars. However, it should be noted that the absorption properties of CAC mortars were negatively examined. Thus, it needs to have more study for the improvement of surface absorption of CAC matrices. In addition, the combined mixture of CAC and OPC were ineffective to improve some performances of mortars.

  • This paper aims at estimating self-cleaning performance of mortar coated with photocatalytic suspension under various conditions. Experimental variables included the concentration (1.5 % and 3.0 %) of photocatalytic suspension for coating mortar specimen, the presence of hydrophilic agent in photocatalytic suspension, and applying the primer on the surface of mortar. The color change of methylene blue solution increased and accordingly self-cleaning performance increased as photocatalytic concentration increased. The presence of hydrophilic agent in photocatalytic suspension slightly decreased the self-cleaning performance compared to the conventional photocatalytic suspension. Test results also showed that mortar specimen including primer and specimen not including primer did not show significantly different self-cleaning performance. In addition, cracks on the surface of mortar specimens decreased as the photocatalytic concentration increased. Therefore, increase in cracks on the surface of mortar at different photocatalytic concentration might adversely affect the self-cleaning performance of mortar specimens.

  • In this study, the self-healing performance of mortar beams containing self-healing materials was evaluated through experiments. Normal mortar beams and self-healing mortar beams were used In the experiments. The self-healing performance was evaluated by comparing the mortar compressive strength, member strength, and self-healing effects of cracks. The experimental results showed that the compressive strength of mortar containing self-healing material was smaller than that of normal mortar, but the ratio of 118 days compressive strength to 28 days compressive strength was the same. The member strength tended to increase with increasing curing period. In normal mortar specimens, the member strength did not recover even if the curing period increased, but the strength of the self-healing mortar specimens tended to recover as reaction products were produced. The crack width tended to decrease after the healing periods in both specimens, but the reaction product was observed only in the self-healing mortar specimens.

  • In this study, a mortar was produced using re-dispersible polymer powders that addresses the defects of aqueous polymer and improves the durability of cement mortar. Also, an attempt was made to examine the properties of polymer modified mortars using re-dispersible polymer powders by strength and durability tests between ordinary Portland cement mortars and polymer modified mortars mixed with aqueous dispersion. The test showed that strength and durability are improved considerably compared with ordinary Portland cement mortar, and the performance of aqueous polymer cement mortar was considerably improved. Accordingly, it is expected that high-quality prepackaged polymer modified mortars can be produced using re-dispersible polymer powders.

  • This paper examined the effect of water repellent type and addition among various factors on the deicing performance of cement mortar surface according to incorporation. As a result, the compressive strength of the water repellentcement mortar compared to the cement mortar, and the compressive strength of the oligomer-based water repellent mortar was higher than that of the monomer-based water repellent. The contact angle of the water-repellent mortar was increased compared to the additive mortar, and the oligomer water-repellent agent compared to the monomer-based water-repellent. As a result of measuring the ice formation time of cement mortar due to the mixing of the water repellent, the ice formation was delayed until 25 minutes for mortar to which the water repellent was added. the measurement of the ice attachment load mortar without water repellent with water repellentwhen the water repellent was added to mortar, deicing performance was increased.

  • This study focuses on the investigation of bond strength of magnesium potassium phosphate cement mortar(MKPC) according to moisture condition of substrate. Tensile bond test, shear bond test and interfacial bond test are adopted for evaluating the adhesion characteristics of MKPC to conventional cement mortar substrate. The main experimental variables are test methods and moisture levels of substrate. Because the moisture condition of the substrate may be critical to achieving bond, optimum moisture condition for a conventional concrete substrate has evaluated in this study. The results are as follows ; The effects of moisture condition at substrate into the bonding of MKPC are less different than polymer cement mortar and epoxy mortar. But the saturated and surface dry condition is the most appropriate moisture level among the considered, followed by saturated condition and wet condition. Thus, an adequate moisture level of substrate for MKPC is essential for good bond strength.

  • This study is investigating the fire resistant finishing materials composed of fly ash and glass forming light weight aggregate has the high temperature thermal stability. High temperatures such as a fire, cementitious materials beget dehydration and micro crack of cement matrix. From the test result, developed fire resistant finishing materials showed good stability in high temperatures. These high temperature stability is caused by the ceramic binding and low thermal conductivity of glass forming light weight aggregate. Also, alkali activation reaction of fly ash and meta kaolin not showing the decomposition of calcium hydrates. Thus, this result indicates that it is possible to fire resistant finishing light weight mortars.

  • Bamboo is representing environmentally friendly building finishing materials as proven in the former researches. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the application properties of cementitious materials modified with bamboo charcoal as building finish materials. Flow test in fresh condition was conducted to assess the workability. Compressive and bending strength were measured after harding. As the thermal properties, thermal conductivity and density were measured. The properties were surpassing over them in case of using the pine charcoal in every tests. The thermal conductivity of them increased with the modified ratio. After the modified ratio 50%, the thermal conductivity decreased. Insolation and absorption performance is due to the lower density by modification of bamboo charcoal.

  • This study discusses the long-term antifungal effect and antifungal performance of Hwangtoh mortars with various natural antifungal substances on five types of mold: Chaetomium globosum, Aspergillus niger, Aureobasidium pullulans, Gliocladium virens, and Penicillium pinophilum, which can be easily detected in the indoors and outdoors of buildings in damp environments. The antifungal performances of various natural antifungal substances extracted from Marjoram, Phytoncide, Thyme, Ginkgo leaves, and Chitosan (oligosaccharide) were investigated on the five types of mold, as a basic experiment. Using the natural antifungal substances selected for the basic experiment, antifungal mortars were made, and their antifungal performance and long-term antifungal effects were also investigated. The results clearly showed that the marjoram extract and their associated mortars had excellent antifungal performance. Also, their long-term antifungal effects were outstanding and at an equivalent level to those of the mortars with organic chemical antifungal agents. The optimum addition rate of the marjoram extract in the mortar was 5% by mass of binder. It was also shown that the phytoncide extract in the mortar needed an addition rate of more than 10% according to the mass of binder, considering the long-term antifungal effect and the antifungal performance.

  • Various methods have been used to reinforce the cementitious material such as mortar and concrete that have weak tensile strength. Major reinforcing method is to mix matrix with fibers which have strong tensile strength. Recently, micro-fiber reinforced mortar has been studied which removes coarse aggregate and uses micro-fiber with small diameter in order to homogenize the matrix properties and maximize the performance of fiber. Performance of micro-fiber reinforced mortar showing multiple cracking behavior is hardly represented only by the flexural toughness. Therefore, This paper reports the cracking behavior as well as mechanical behavior for various mixtures which have different fiber type and mixture proportions to find the proper parameter representing the cracking characteristic. Correlations between flexural toughness and various cracking characteristics such as cracking area, width and number are explored. As a result, it is found that flexural toughness, volume of fiber and number of cracks are suitable for representing the characteristics of micro-fiber reinforced mortar.
