  • Comparisons of surface sediment distributions in summer 1997 and 2011 and elevations on the tidal flats in April 1998 and March 2013 had been used for understanding the long-term changes of sedimentary environments at southern Kanghwa tidal flat, west coast of Korea. The mud sediments dominated in the eastern part and sandy mud sediments dominated in the western part of the tidal flat in 1997. In 2011, the surface sediments were dominant mud and sandy mud at Sunduri and Tonggum in the eastern part, sandy mud at Tongmakri in the middle part, and sand and muddy sand at Yeochari and Changhwari tidal flats in the western part. The area of mud sediments had decreased, but that of sand-mud mixed sediments extended to eastward tidal flat for 14 years. The long-term topographic changes showed that deposition occurred at Tongmakri and Yeochari and erosion occurred at Changhwari tidal flat during 15 years. These changes should be effected the local hydrodynamic changes by several constructions near the tidal flat since the 1990s.

  • Acoustic characteristics of water sediment were experimentally studied in laboratory. Water saturated sand sediment less than the grain size of 0.5 mm diameter is uniformly distributed in an acryl box (100 mm×100mm×42mm) with material thickness 1 mm. Pores in the acryl box are modeled as the structure of cylindrical pore tubes (diameter 3 mm and length 42 mm) filled with water. Cylindrical pore tubes have porosities 0%, 5%, 11%, 18% and 26 % controlled by the tube numbers. Transmitted acoustic waves through sand sediment specimen are analyzed as the functions of porosity and frequency from 0.3 MHz to 4 MHz. Transmitted acoustic waves are mixed with the first-kind wave from whole specimen and the second-kind wane from cylindrical pore tubes. For the center frequency 1 MHz, the first kind wave is dominant but for the center frequency 2.25 MHz, the second kind wave is dominant. In the case of the first-kind wave, as the porosity increases, the transmission coefficient decreases and the sound speed decreases to the sound speed of water. As the frequency increases, the transmission coefficient decreases but the sound speed is almost constant. In the case of the second-kind wave, as the porosity increases, the transmission coefficient increases but the sound speed is almost constant. The transmission coefficient and the sound speed are almost constant as a function of frequency.

  • The southern tidal flat of Kanghwa Island is one of the biggest flats on the west coast of Korea. Tide is typically a semidiurnal with maximum range of about 10m. The tidal flat receives large amount of sediments from Han River system. Surface sediments for sedimentary analyses were sampled at 83 stations in the study area in August 2003. The surface sediments consisted of five sedimentary facies. Generally, sandy mud sediments dominated in the southern tidal flat of Kanghwa Island, whereas sand sediments dominated in channel and subtidal zones of the western part of Kanghwa Island. The area of sandy mud sediment extended to eastward tidal flat compared to sedimentary facies in August 1997. Sedimentary facies analysis of three core sediments from the tidal flat to the south of the Kangwha Island revealed three sedimentary facies: trough-cross-bedded sand, laminated silt, and bioturbated silt. Distribution of the facies in the cores suggested that sedimentation rates has been generally high in the margin of main tidal channel, especially in the east of the Donggeum Island. Twelve-and-half-hour anchoring survey was carried out for measurements of hydrodynamic parameters at Yeomha channel near Choji Bridge(K1) and channel near Donggeum Island(K2) in June 2003. Residual flows indicated strong ebb-dominated tidal currents. Depth-integrated net suspended sediment loads for one tidal cycle were seaward movement with 309,217.9kg/m and 128,123.1kg/m at station K1 and K2, respectively. The higher value of net suspended sediment loads at station K1 suggested that lots of suspended sediments from Han River deposited in the eastern part of tidal flat.

  • The modal analysis was carried out for the total of 216 subface sediments of southern continental shelf of Korean peninsula. Sandy mud or muddy sand distributed in the range of 70∼100 m water depth revealed the bimodal type (sand and mud components). The relations of textural parameters obtained from every modal were consistent with those of shallow marine sediments. The characteristics of sand component between bimodal were as follows: (1) the distributions of mean grain size, sorting, shell content were repeatedly distributed like the directions of depth contour lines. (2) Sand component was composed of medium to fine sand (Mz, 1-3$\psi$) containing many shell fragments, a few pebbles, and iron-stained quartz. (3) The surface of quartz revealed the concordial breakage and V-shaped features formed at high energy environment. (4) In CM-pattern, sand component was plotted in rolling and bottom suspension area. These characteristics imply that sand component probably derives from shoreface sediments deposited at the beach environment.

  • To investigate the controlling factor and accumulation of trace metal concentrations in Chun-su Bay sediments, grain-size, specific surface area, organic carbon content, calcium carbonate content, and concentration of Al, Fe, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Ti, Mn, P, S, Ba, Sr, Li, Co, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Cs, Sc, V, Sn were analyzed. Controlling factors of metals were quartz-dilution, calcium carbonate and coarse sand or K-feldspar. Although the distribution of V, Co, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sn, and Cd concentration was explained by grain-size effiect, Mn and As showed the similar importance of grain-size effect and coarse sand or K-feldspar factors. By virtue of enrichment factor and 1 M HCl experiment, there were little enrichment in all the trace metals in bay sediments, which were explained well by geochemical properties of sediments. Since the concentration levels of As in coarse sand were high as much as those in fine-grained sediments and it was combined with Mn oxide (1 M HCl leached) and K-feldspar (residual), it was suggested that when the enrichment of As in sediments would be assessed, it is necessary to separate the coarse sand from bulk sediments or to use only sediments with higher than 10% in < $16{\mu}m$ fraction.

  • Analysis of chirp high-resolution seismic profiles from the central Yellow Sea reveals that depositional environments in this area can be divided into three distinctive zones from west to east: (1) subaqueous delta system near the Shandong Peninsula, (2) erosional zone in the central Yellow Sea, and (3) tidal sand ridges and sand waves near the Korean Peninsula. The Shandong subaqueous delta, extending southward from the Shandong Peninsula, changes gradually into prodelta southeastward. The sediments originated from the Yellow River are transported southward along the Chinese coastal area. The erosional zone in the central Yellow Sea contains numerous paleochannels and shows linear erosional features trending northwest-southeast. The erosional zone would be dominated by non-depositional or erosional processes during the Holocene. Tidal sand ridges and sand waves are well developed along the western coast of Korea. The residual sands, which were originally fluvial sediments at the sea-level lowstand, are interpreted as the result of winnowing process during the sea-level rise. Modern sand ridges generally migrates in a northeast-southwestern direction, which coincide with dominant tidal current direction.

  • From the analyses of 16 bottom sediment samples and current data obtained during field expert ments from August to September 1987, the textural characteristics and transport mode of sand grains of a tidal sand ridge in Gyeonggi Bay are studied. The textural characteristic of the bottom sediments are diverse depending on their location on the tidal sand ridge. Sands on the crest are well sorted. near symmetric in skewness. leptokurtic in kurtosis. and are unimodal in peakedness. On the other hand, Poorly sorted gravelly sands in the trough are coarse skewed in skewness and plartkurtic in kurtosis. The mean values of U/SUB 100/ (velocity at one meter above bottom) and U/SUP */ (boundary shear velocity) are calculated to be 41.4 cm/sec and 2.39 cm/sec, respectively. From the analyses of characteristics of the sediments and currents in the study area, it can be concluded that almost all the sands of the tidal sand ridge (esp. on the crest) are transported as bedload (mainly as saltation).

  • Hampyeong Bay has a narrow seawater channel and a complex topographical structure. The sand content of the tidal flat soil is increasing due to asymmetrical sedimentation. Through the investigation of the vegetation distribution and the use of the line-transect method, sand flats were observed to gradually change the vegetation distribution of salt marshes. Comparing the vegetation area between 2016 and 2022, the obligate halophyte Suaeda maritima decreased by 74% and Zoysia sinica increased by 75%. Z. sinica seems to support the robustness of the dune environment by trapping sediments such as sand in the colony, because the underground rhizomes and stems are highly developed. To establish an effective conservation management plan for tidal flats, an integrated study should be conducted to assess the impact of changes in tidal flat soil and the interaction of vegetation communities in Hampyeong Bay.

  • Surface sediments for sedimentary analyses were sampled at 199 stations in the study area in August 2003. The surface sediments consisted of six sedimentary facies. Generally, sandy mud sediments dominated in the southern tidal flat of Ganghwa Island and sand sediments dominated in channel and subtidal zones of the western part of Ganghwa Island. The area of sandy mud sediment extended to eastward tidal flat compared to sedimentary facies in August 1997. In 30 surface sediment samples from the Ganghwa tidal flat and subtidal zone, 61 species were recorded in total assemblages, including 34 species of living population. Ammonia beccarii and Elphidium etigoense in living population and Ammonia beccarii, Elphidium etigoense, Jadammina sp. and Textularia earlandi in total assemblage were widely distributed. Generally, relatively large numbers of species and high values of species diversity occurred in the area of western part of tidal flat. Cluster analysis of total assemblages discriminates four biofacies. Biofacies 1 indicated eastern part of the tidal flat and biofacies 4 indicated western part of the tidal flat. Biofacies 3 were transitional zone between biofacies 1 and 4.
