  • Sheet Music of the National Anthem of Korea with Lyrics in Korean, Chinese, and English is a four-sided sheet of paper folded in half. It was first introduced to Korea on November 12, 1945, by Kim Ku, the president of the Provisional Government. The sheet music was published in three languages and is a valuable document for researching the evolution of the anthem and its history. Although it was published in large quantities at the time, it is currently known as the only in Korea and has been designated and managed as a national registered heritage. The sheet music was not significantly damaged, but discoloration and physical damage suggested raised the need for conservation treatment. A pre-treatment examination of the conservation condition revealed that the artifact was received on archival film and had been folded in half for many years, leaving it vulnerable to tears at the top and bottom of the folds and partial wear and tear at the edges. In addition, the pigments used on both sides of the sheet had discolored and transferred to the opposite side. Portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis was conducted to investigate the pigments used in the sheet music cover, specifically focusing on red, black, and light blue pigments. Titanium (Ti) was detected in the light blue pigment, characterized by a powdery coloring layer. The remaining colors in the printed form were difficult to sample and could not be analyzed further. The light blue sample underwent additional analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and Raman spectroscopy. Cross-validation of the results with the artifact's historical context suggested that the bright blue color observed in the 1945 sheet music is likely due to the use of anatase white pigment, rather than rutile. Furthermore, the bright blue pigment is believed to be a blend of phthalocyanine blue, a synthetic pigment introduced in 1936. Fiber analysis revealed longitudinal striations in the hemp fibers and twists in the cotton fibers, suggesting that the paper was made from a mixture of cotton and hemp fibers. Based on the findings of the condition survey, the conservation treatment for the artifact focused on minimizing moisture to avoid stressing the paper and reinforcing the physically vulnerable areas. The reinforcement paper was dyed to match the base of the artifacts, pre-coated repair paper was used for conservation, and appropriate folders and boxes were made for storage after treatment. This study is expected to serve as an important foundational resource on the materials used in modern and contemporary records.

  • To elucidate the behaviors of alkali swelllng of woods. the dimensional change in cross section of cell elements of four major Korean woods during alkali swelling were examined by an optical microscory, an imaging analysis method and an X-ray diffrartion During alkali swelling, tracheid diameter of Larix kaempferi wood showed greater swelling property than that of Pinus koraiensis wood, and the cell wall swelled highly over 10% sodium hydroxide solution treatment. The radial diameter of vessel elements in earlywood shrunk, but it swelled slightly in tangential direction. When treated with 5% NaOH, the wall thickness of wood fiber increased about three times over the original one. The thickness of cell wall in all elements and the diameter of wood fiber and tracheid showed almost isotropic shrinkage. The diameter of cell elements during the mercerization process decreased, but cell wall thickness Increased. Crystal transformation of cellulose in wood was not occurred by alkali treatments. but relative crystallinity and crystallite width of the woods increased slightly. Consequently, it was demonstrated that the swelling properties of woods were dependant on wood species, cell elements and alkali concentration.

  • The appropriate dripper position in perlite bag was investigated for tomato production. Drippers were laid at 5(F5), 15cm (F15) away from the stem base or 5cm at first and then moved to 15cm later (M5-15). Roots were developed more near the stem base in F5, while less in F15. Roots were distributed evenly in M5-15. In vertical distribution of water in perlite bag, water content was higher as it went deeper with the variation by dripper positions. Yield was high in F15 and low in F5. In conclusion the position of dripper is the best at 15cm from the stem base in perlite bag culture in view of root distribution and yield.

  • A series of samples having different $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio were prepared by treating hydrogen mordenites with boiling hydrochloric acid and with hydrofluoric acid. The acidities of these samples were measured by TPD of $NH_3$ and by pyridine adsorption using IR, and the catalytic activities and selectivities of isomerization were measured for the reaction of ortho-xylene. For the samples treated by boiling hydrochloric acid, the acidities decreased with the increasing $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio caused by the extraction of framework aluminum. The sample having the $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio or 22 showed better activity than the others. For the samples treated by hydrofluoric acid, the content of chemically binding fluorine increased with the increasing contact time of hydrofluoric acid solution. The catalytic activities decreased with the hydrofluoric acid treatment due to the decreased acid sites resulted from the extraction of aluminum and silicon as well as the hydroxyl group replacement by the fluoride ion. The slightly increasing catalytic activities, however, came from the newly created acid sites, due to the removal of surface silicon, having enhanced by the inductive effect of binding fluorin with further acid treatment.

  • A mass treatment of head louse infestation with SumithrinB powder (0. 4% phenothrin) in primary school children was implemented during the period of September 1991-May 1992. The infestation rate of total 2,515 children was 38.6% in average (21.2 % in boys and 57.5% in girls) . The reduction rate of head louse infestation was 93.4% with a single treatment and 94.8% with double consecutive treatments with about 10 days interval, which indicated that a single treatment would be recommended for the mass treatment in the community. Long term follow-up after Sumithrin powder application for head louse control in a primary school showed that the infestation rate dropped from 33.1% before treatment to 5.4% by seven months after treatment, giving a 83.4% reduction rate. Key words: Mass treatment, Sumithrin powder, head louse, Korea.

  • In a natural fiber-reinforced composite material, many studies have been devoted to improving the interfacial adhesion between natural fiber and polymer matrix and the composite properties through various fiber surface modifications. In the present study, waste wool-reinforced polypropylene matrix composites were fabricated by compression molding and their mechanical and impact properties were characterized. As a result, the tensile and flexural properties and the impact strength of waste wool/polypropylene composites strongly depended on the treatment medium, alkali treatment with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and silane treatment with 3-glycidylpropylsilane(GPS). The composite with waste wool by silane treatment exhibited higher mechanical properties and impact resistance than that by alkali treatment. The fracture surfaces of the composites support qualitatively the increased properties, showing the improved interfacial bonding between the waste wool and the polypropylene matrix.

  • In order to investigate the effect of the chemical treatment of bamboo fiber on physical properties of polypropylene (PP)/bamboo fiber (BF) composites, silane coupling agents such as ${\gamma}$-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS), ${\gamma}$-glycidoxypropyl-trimethoxysilane (GPS) and ${\gamma}$-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MRPS) were applied to BF and alkaline treated BF. Morphological properties of the chemically treated BF were confirmed by optical microscope and SEM measurements, and chemical structure changes were confirmed by FT-IR and EDS. TGA results showed that the thermal stability of silane treated BF increased. Based on the analysis of a universal testing machine and an Izod impact test, the flexural and impact properties of PP/silane treated BF composites showed higher values than those of PP/BF composites. The enhancement of interfacial adhesion properties of the PP/BF composite was checked from SEM images of the fracture of specimens after the tensile test.
