Basal Cell Carcinoma in a Domestic Hedgehog (국내 고슴도치에서 발생한 기저세포암종)

  • A 1-year-old female hedgehog was presented with subcutaneous mass in the right forelimb. Grossly, an elevated subcutaneous mass approximately 4 cm in diameter was located in forelimb. Central dark brown area was surrounded by peripheral milky white zone in the cut surface of mass. Histopathologically, numerous neoplastic cells formed irregular cords or sheets in dermis. Most of neoplastic cells showed palisading features to basement membrane with or without central caseous necrosis. These neoplastic cells showed invasive tendency to adjacent tissues. According to immunohistochemistry, the neoplastic cells demonstrated strong positive signals for pancytokeratin, and negative for vimentin. Based on the gross, histopathology and immunohistochemistry, this mass was diagnosed as basal cell carcinoma in a hedgehog.

  • Thymic carcinoid or neuroendocrine tumor of thymus is a very rare disease and has poor prognosis due to frequent recurrence and distant metastasis. A 43-year-old man was refered to our hospital because of Rt. chest pain and tightness. Chest X-ray revealed $7{\times}8$cm sized mass on Rt. anterior mediastinum. Surgical excision was performed and light microscopic, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic findings were confirmed as atypical thymic carcinoid tumor with thymic cyst. The patient has been followed up without recurrence or distant metastasis postoperatively for 3 months to now. We report a case of atypical thymic carcinoid with thymic cysts.

Preventive Effects on Transmissible Gastroenteritis Using by TGEV Antiserum II. Clinical Sign, Histopathological and Immunohistochemical Findings (항혈청 투여에 의한 돼지 전염성 위장염의 예방효과 II.임상검사, 병리조직학적 검사, 면역조직화학적 검사)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate protective effects against transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) infection in piglets by administration of the TGEV antiserum orally at 2hrs, 24hrs and 36hrs after birth. Five piglets administered with the TGEV antiserum were experimentally challenged with TGEV at four-day-old. Control group was four piglets challenged with TGEV only. Clinical signs and gross, histopathological and immunohistochemical findings were examined. In clinical signs, piglets of the control group appeared the typical signs such as severe watery diarrhea, depression and anorexia but piglets of the TGEV antiserum adminstered group recovered progressively. In mortality, control group showed 75%, but TGEV antiserum adminstered group showed 20.0 %, respectively. In gross findings, piglets of the control group appeared the typical findings of congestion, distension of lumen, contaning curdes of undigested milk in stomach. But gross findings of piglets of the TGEV antiserum adminstered group appeared milder than them of control group. In histopathological findings, piglets of the control group appeared the typical findings of villous atrophy and fusion, congesion, exfoliation, vacuolation, squamation, loss of cilia and proliferation of crypt. But histopathological findings of piglets of the TGEV antiserum adminstered group appeared milder than them of control group. In immunohistochemical findings, piglets of the TGEV antiserum adminstered group showed more intensive in reaction for IgA and IgG than them of control group. The recation for IgA was stronger than that of IgG. It was concluded that oral administration of TGEV antiserum to piglets was effective to prevent TGEV infection and reduce their mortality.

  • The palatine tonsils which are located in entrance of digestive and upper respiratory tracts are the most important organ in anatomical and functional structures of the pharyngeal lymphatic tissues. As for function of the tonsil, there have been many suspected theories that were included hematopoietic, hormonal, digestive function and production of vitamin, entry of bacteria with other antigenous materials and defence mechanism of which has taken charge by Virchow in 1860 in past. But among these theories, in recently, defence mechanism of the tonsil was strongly accepted immunologically. For the purpose of elucidating immune response of the tonsil, the author observed serum immunoglobulin levels, peripheral total lymphocyte counts and populations of T, B and Null lymphocytes before and after tonsillectomy in 30 cases of patients with chronic tonsillitis and 29 cases of healthy controls. The results obtained were as follows; 1) Serum Ig M level was significantly higher in patient group than in control group but was not significantly different preoperative from postoperative patient group. 2) Population of T-lymphocyte more significantly decreased in patient group than in control group but it was not significantly different preoperative from postoperative patient group. 3) Population of B-lymphocyte more significiantly increased in patient group than in control group but it was not significantly different preoperative from postoperative patient group. On the basis of these results, it may be suggested that tonsil play partially a role in the immune response of human.

Protective Effects of Curcumin on CCl4-Induced Hepatic Fibrosis with High Fat Diet in C57BL/6 Mice (C57BL/6 마우스에서 고지방 식이와 CCl4로 유발한 간섬유증에 미치는 커큐민의 보호효과)

  • Curcumin, a major polyphenolic compound of turmeric, is well known to prevent non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) related to obesity. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of curcumin on hepatic fibrosis induced by carbon tetrachloride ($CCl_4$) in obese mice. $CCl_4$ was administrated in mice fed a normal diet (ND) or a high fat diet (HFD) for 7 weeks together with or without curcumin. It was conducted to examine for metabolic profiles, adipocyte size, and liver fibrosis by serum biochemistry, histology and immunohistochemistry. Also, Apoptosis of hepatic cells was determined by the TUNEL method. Treatment with curcumin significantly lowered the body weight, fasting glucose, serum AST and ALT, and decreased the adipocyte size, the number of macrophage and mast cells in adipose tissue, and collagen deposition in liver tissue in the HFD+$CCl_4$ group compared with the findings of the HFD+$CCl_4$ group. In contrast, treatment with curcumin on the ND+$CCl_4$ group did not show a significant difference except the body weight and mast cell number when compared with the ND+$CCl_4$ group. Furthermore, curcumin significantly reduced the number of parenchymal apoptotic cells, whereas it increased the number of non-parenchymal apoptotic cells, especially resembling an activated hepatic stellate cell in the liver. Taken together, this data suggests that curcumin might be an effective antifibrotic drug for the prevention of liver disease progression in obese mice. Thus, the development of curcumin as a therapy for obesity and liver fibrosis is supported.

Choriocarcinoma in Posterior Mediastinum A case Report (후종격 응모막암종 -1 례 보고-)

  • Primary mediastinal choriocarcinoma is characteristically seen in young males presenting with the symptomes of cough, chest pale, and gynccomastia. A 33-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of severe dyspnea and chest pain which was aggravated rapidly 2 or 3 days ago. Posterior mcdiastinal mass measuring about 1 cm in diameter was seen in Chest P-A, left lateral view of chest, and chest CT. Serum $\beta$-HCG level was markedly elevated up to 200, 000 mIxt. Whole body CT and other studies could not find any lesion on ovary and uterus. But, a single nodule nEeasuring about 1 cm in diameter was identified in the brain CT. The tumor cells (syncytiotrophoblastic cells) from resected mass revealed positivity on i histochemical staining for $\beta$-HCG. She was treated with EMA-CO after resection of tumor, But, 7 months later, she was readmitted and showed cerebral hemorrhage due to metastatic choriocarcinoma. She was operated again for the brain tumor, and was doing well for further 7 months.

Effect of Rehmanniae Radix and Pear Phenolic Compound on the STZ-Treated Mice for Induction of Diabetes (생지황(Rehmanniae Radix)과 배의 Phenolic Compound가 Streptozotocin으로 유발된 고혈당 생쥐에 미치는 영향)

  • This study has been carried out to investigate effect of Rehmanniae Radix (RR) and pear phenolic compound (PC) on the hyperglycemic mice induced with streptozotocin (STZ). For this purpose, male mice were fed with a 0.2 mL RR extract (S group) and the pear PC (90 mg/kg/day) dissolved in a 0.2 mL RR extract (SPC group) while the control group received the same commercial diet for 6 weeks. The blood glucose contents were examined from tail vein blood once a week for 6 weeks. Samples of pancreas removed after the experimental period were processed for the immunohistochemical identification of $\beta$-cells. The levels of serum glucose were decreased significalntly (p<0.05) in the S and SPC groups compared with the control group. The BUN and creatinine levels were significantly (p<0.05) decreased in SPC group compared with the control group. Intraperitoneal glucose tolerance tests peformed at 24 hours before that period revealed that glucose tolerances in S and SPC group were ameliorated. Immunohistochemical analyses of the pancreases revealed that a lot of insulin- positive $\beta$-cells were contained in a Langerhas's islets of S and SPC groups compared with the control group, and the number of Langerhas's islets were significalntly increased in S (p<0.01) and SPC (p<0.05) groups. These results suggest that RR extract and pear PC could recover the damages induced by STZ in the hyperglycemic mice.

Effects of Saengchinyanghyoltang-gamibang on the Pancreatic Islets of the Mice Induced with Streptozotocin (생진양혈탕가미방이 Streptozotocin으로 유발된 당뇨 생쥐의 췌장에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to understand the effects of Saengchinyanghyoltang-gamibang (SGT) on pancreatic islets of the mice induced with streptozotocin (STZ). In the control group, two times injected with 50 mg/kg 572 at 24-hour intervals, a few number of insulin immunoreactive-cells are observed at the pancreatic islets of the mice. In the experimental group which administered with extract of SGT during 21-day, a number of immunoreactive-cells are observed at the pancreatic islets. According to the electron microscopic observation, $\beta-cells$ of the control group were contained a few of secretory granules, but also these granules were contained electro-lucent materials. In the experimental group, a lot o( secretory granules and well developed cell organelles are observed at the $\beta-cells$. The level of glucose was significantly decreased in the experimental group compared with control group, but the level of BUN was similar in these two groups. These results suggest that administration of SGT to the mice improved the damage of $\beta-cells$ from injected with STZ.

  • Progressive dysphagia in a 53 year old man was caused by a giant polypoid tumor in the lower intrathoracic esophagus. Radical transthoracic esophagectomy and esophagogastrostomy were carried out. Microscopic examination of the tumor revealed a true carcinosarcoma, composed of a mixture of basaloid squamous cell carcinoma and chondrosarcoma with multiple cartilagenous productions. Carcinoma metastases were found in the subcarinal and perigastric lymph nodes. Immunohistochemically, squamous area displayed strong positive to cytokeratin, and basaloid area showed positive immunoreaction to high molecular weight cytokeratin (34${\beta}$E12). Spindle cell sarcoma reacted to vimentin and smooth muscle actin. Chondrosarcomatous area reacted to vimentin and S-100 protein. He received postoperative chemotherpy and radiotherapy. He has been free of disease for 11 months.

  • In the last 5 years the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) has emerged as one of the most important targets for drug development in oncology. Monoclonal antibodies targeting the external domain of EGFR have been shown to have clinical benefits in colorectal and head and neck cancer when combined with chemotherapy and/or radiation. Also the targeting of the epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) kinase domain using the closely related inhibitors gefitinib and erlotinib has generally been ineffective against solid tumors, many of which over express the receptor. We found that there were some differential expressions according to primary antibodies of the EGFR protein which being used as one of the histological tumor markers for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We also found that there are some differential expressions according to antibodies, the pH of the antigen retrieval (AR) buffer solutions and kinds of enzymes. There were some differential expressions according to the secondary antibodies and the detection systems. We analyzed the correlations between the immunohistochemical expressions of the EGFR protein and the gene mutations of the EGFR. The differences between automatic stainers and manual staining methods were also evaluated.
