  • Several studies regarding depolymerization of polycarbonate waste to get the essential monomer, bisphenol A, have been reported in recent years. However, those methods have some environmental safety problems of using highly toxic organic solvents as well as product separation problem due to the use of alkali catalyst. In this study, we proposed the combination of glycolysis and methanolysis to depolymerize the polycarbonate waste. Glycolysis reaction reached at the reaction equilibrium after about 180 minat 473.15K and dissolution of the polycarbonate was found to be a rate controlling step of the reaction. The yield of BPA was improved with the aid of combination of glycolysis and methanolysis. The methanolysis was carried out at a temperature range of $303.15K{\sim}363.15K$ and MeOH/PC molar ratio $0.5{\sim}3$. The yield of BPA had a maximum at 1.0 MeOH/PC molar ratio and increased with the reaction temperature.

  • A kinetic study of the methanolysis of t-butylbromide and benzoylchloride in methanol-acetonitrile mixtures is reported. First order rate constants for the methanolysis of t-butyl bromide show maximum at $X_{MeOH}$=0.75∼0.9 and 25∼$50^{\circ}C$. Apparent second order rate constants for the methanolysis of benzoylchloride also show maximum at $X_{MeOH}$= 0.6∼0.95 and 12∼$26^{\circ}C$. The maximum rate is ascribed to the solvent structure change; the addition of acetonitrile to methanol perturbs the methanol structure increasing the free methanol molecules available to stabilize the transition state for the methanolysis of t-butylbromide and benzoylchloride. It has been shown that methanol acts as nucleophilic and electrophilic catalyst upon methanolysis of t-butylbromide and as electrophilic catalyst upon methanolysis of benzoylchloride.

  • In the present study, an attempt was made to investigate the effects of steeping treatment on browning of onion hydrolysate. After steeping treatment with solvents, phenols content of methanol and ethanol were showed 25.1mg/ml and 24.9mg/ml. And absorbance of methanol and ethanol was showed 0.26 and 0.22. L and b value of treatment with methanol and ethanol were lower than other solvents. Browning reaction of onion hydrolysate was decreased with increasing concentration of ethanol. Treatment of above 80% ethanol was effective to remove phenols and was showed a low color intensity. Treatment with 80% ethanol was more effective than addition of cystein to remove phenols and to decrease browing degree.

  • Cu-Zn and Cu-Zn-Ti catalysts for the steam reforming of methanol were prepared. This reaction was carried out at atmospheric pressure, $250^{\circ}C$, steam/methanol molar ratio 1.5, and contact time 0.1 g-cat.hr/mL-feed. In case of the catalyst with 3 mol% of $TiO_2$, the activity was superior to that of catalysts without $TiO_2$. The reaction products were mainly hydrogen and carbon dioxide. It was found that catalytic activity was not related to specific surface area but affected by metallic copper area which was measured by $N_2O$ decomposition and increased with the addition of $TiO_2$ content. XPS and XRD showed that the oxidation state of zinc was not changed during reaction, but oxidation states of copper existed in Cu(0) or Cu(I).

  • Composite membranes were prepared by the solution casting method from sulfonated poly(etheretherketone)(sPEEK) and imidazole and phosphotungstic acid(PWA) to enhance the electrolytic properties of the membrane. TGA measurements showed that physical crosslinking due to acid-base interactions improved the thermal resistance to the desulfonation of sulfonic acid groups of the composite membrane and the addition of PWA enhanced the resistance to thermal decomposition of the composite membrane. The acid-base interaction decreased the water uptake, proton conductivity and methanol permeability of the sPEEK/imidazole composite membranes. The addition of PWA increased the proton conductivities while it decreased the water uptake and methanol permeability of sPEEK/imidazole/PWA composite membranes. Therefore, the selectivity of the composite membranes was enhanced by the addition of PWA.

  • Decomposition reaction of methanol was conducted on Ni-Cu/SiO$_2$catalysts with several variables. Variables used in this study are S.V(Space Velocity), partial pressure of methanol, reaction temperature, and composition rate of Ni-Cu. The range of S.V is 10,000-30,000h$\^$-1/, the temperature range is 150-400$^{\circ}C$ and values of Cu/(Ni+Cu) are 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1. Over Ni/SiO$_2$, and Ni-Cu/SiO$_2$, the conversion rate of decomposition reaction of methanol arrived at 100% with increasing of temperature. At this time the selectivity of CO on Ni/SiO$_2$, was suddenly decreased, but on Ni-Cu/SiO$_2$, it was still sustained highly. The main products of reaction were CO and H$_2$, and by-products were CO$_2$ and CH$_4$mainly.

  • This study investigated the degradation of phenol using sonication and/or UV-C. The effects of frequency, temperature, pH in solution, argon purging, with UV intensity were estimated in sonication-only, UV-only, and the combined reaction of sonication with UV. The optimum condition for degrading phenol in the sonication-only reaction was 35 kHz, $5^{\circ}C$, and pH 4. As this condition approximately 30% degradation of phenol was achieved within 360 min. However, phenol in the UV-only at $19.3\;mw/cm^2$ under the same condition was completely degraded within 60 min. In the combined system of sonication with UV, the degradation of phenol was well fitted to first-order rate model, and phenol was completely degraded within 360 min and 45 min at UV intensity of $7.6\;mW/cm^2$($17.3{\times}10^{-3}\;min^{-1}$) and $19.3\;mW/cm^2$($138.1{\times}10^{-3}\;min^{-1}$), respectively. Adding methanol, as a radical scavenger, in the phenol degradation in the sonication reaction indicates that OH radical is a major factor in the degradation of phenol. The order of degradation efficiencies of phenol was in the order of as follows; combined reaction of sonication with UV > UV-only > sonication-only.

  • The gamma radiolysis of C$O_2$, in the presence of organic additives, was studied at the total absorbed dose of 6.7 Mrad. Considerable quantity of CO was produced by adding these additives to $O_2$, though no CO was found without them. The maximum G(CO) values of 4.1 and 4.6 were obtained by addition of 0.5% methanol and 0.25% ethanol, respectively. The G(CO) values of 6.3 and 8.4 were noted by the addition of 1% acetaldehyde and 1% formaldehyde, respectively. The maximum CO concentration of 0.65% was obtained by the addition of 1% acetaldehyde at the dose of 40 Mrad.

  • Rate Constants of hydrolysis of N-(benzenesulfonyl)-C-(N-methylanilino)imidoyl chlorides were determined by UV spectrophotometry in 50% (v/v) aqueous methanol at 25$^{\circ}C.$ On the basis of rate equation, substituent effect, solvent effect, salt effect, thermodynamic parameters and hydrolysis product analysis, it may be concluded that the hydrolysis of N-(benzenesulfonyl)-C-(N-methylanilino)imidoyl chlorides proceed through $S_N1$ mechanism via azocarbonium ion intermediate below pH 9.0, while aebove pH 10.0 the hydrolysis proceeds through nucleophilic addition-elimination ($Ad_{N-E}$) mechanism.
