  • This paper presents a new model-based macroblock layer rate control algorithm for low bit rate video coding which generates output bits corresponding to a target bit budget. The H.264 standard uses various coding modes and optimization methods to improve the compression performance, which makes it difficult to control the generated traffic accurately in low bit rate environments. In the proposed scheme, we first estimate MAD values of macroblocks in a frame and define a target remaining bits using the estimated MAD values before encoding each macroblock. If a difference between the target value and the actual value is greater than a threshold value, the quantization parameter is adjusted to decrease the difference. It is shown by experimental results that the new algorithm can obtain more than 66% decrease of the difference between the target bits and the resulting bits for a frame with the PSNR performance better than that of the existing rate control algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose macroblock(MB)-based adaptive interpolation filter method for improving coding efficiency in H.264/AVC. In the proposed method, nine separable two-dimensional(2D) interpolation filters are applied for precisely compensating motions in various directions. The optimal cost function which considers the bit rate and distortion for coding the MB is defined. The filter is adaptively selected per MB for minimizing the defined cost function. In the experimental results, the proposed method shows more excellent in coding efficiency than the conventional methods for the various standard $QCIF(176{\times}144)/CIF(352{\times}288)$ video test sequences. It leads to about 6.25%(1 reference frame) and 3.46%(5 reference frames) bit rate reduction on average compared to the H.264/AVC.

  • This paper presents a polyphase down sampling based multiple description coding applied to H.264 video coding standard. For a given macroblock, a residual macroblock is calculated by motion estimation, and before applying DCT, quantization and entrophy coding of the H.264 coding process, the polyphase down sampling is applied to the residual macroblock to code in four separate descriptions. Experiments were performed for all the 9 test sequences of JVT SVC standardization in various packet loss patterns. Experimental results show that the proposed one gives 0.5 to 5 dB enhancement over an error-concealment based on the slice group map technolgoy.

  • H.264/AVC is the newest video coding standard of ITU-T VCEG and the ISO/IEC MPEG, offering a significant performance improvement over previous video coding standards. However, the computational complexity of H.264/AVC is drastically increased because of new technologies such as intra prediction, variable block size, quarter-pels motion estimation/compensation, etc. In this paper, we propose a fast intra prediction scheme which has two step processing. The first step is a fast block size decision which can be calculated only in one block without considering all cases of $4{\times}4$ block and $16{\times}16$ block. The complexity of the intra prediction can be reduced by using boundary difference values of macroblock. After selecting the block size, we can make mode decision using the neighbouring reference pixels and representative pixels of the block in the second step. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm saved on the average 41.5% encoding time without any significant PSNR losses.

  • Compressed video bitstreams are intended for real-time transmission over communication networks. Because video compression algorithms eliminate the temporal, spatial, and statistical redundancies, the coded video bitstreams are very sensitive to transmission errors. We propose an error resilient video coding technique to limit the effect of error propagation in low bit-rate video coding. The success of error resilient coding techniques relies on how accurately the transmission errors can be detected. To detect the transmission error, we propose a very simple error detection technique based on data hiding Next, we conceal the corrupted MB data using intra MB refresh and motion compensation with the estimated motion vector and compare the simulation results. This method will be useful in video communication in error Prone environment such as WCDMA networks.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel hardware architecture for Rate control module for real time full HD video compression. In the proposed architecture, QP is updated by using the rate control algorithm to every the macroblock line(120MB for Full HD, 20MB for CIF image). Since there are many complex arithmetic and floating point arithmetic in rate control algorithm of JM for H.264, it is impossible to process the rate control algorithm using the integer arithmetic CPU core. So we adopted floating point arithmetic unit in our architecture, and implemented the rate control algorithm using the floating unit. With this implemented hardware, the implemented hardware is verified to be operated in real time.

  • An H.264/AVC fast motion estimation methodology is presented in this paper. Advanced SIMD based NEON which is one of the parallel processing methods is supported under the ARM Cortex-A9 dual-core platform. NEON is applied to a full search technique with one of the various motion estimation methods and SAD operation count of each macroblock is reduced to 1/4. Pixel values of the corresponding macroblock are assigned to eight 16-bit NEON registers and Intrinsic function in NEON architecture carried out 128 bits arithmetic operations at the same time. In this way, the exact motion vector with the minimum SAD value among the calculated SAD values can be designated. Experimental results show that performance gets improved 30% above average in accordance with the size of image and macroblock.

  • In this paper, we propose new methods to detect a scene cut and a dissolve region in compressed MPEG video sequences. The scene cut detection method uses edge images obtained using DCT AC coefficients and the dissolve detection method utilizes the macroblock type information of the MPEG stream. The proposed scene cut detection method is insensitive to brightness and can detect scene changes more precisely than the methods using DC coefficients since AC edge images can express original images more exactly than DC edge images do. The proposed dissolve detection method using the number of intra macroblocks(MBs) computationally efficient since it does not require the decoding process. Experimental results show that the proposed methods perform better in detection scene changes than conventional other methods.

  • In this paper, we propose a video sequence coding scheme called AMV (Auxiliary Motion Vector) to minimize error propagation caused by transmission errors over the Internet. Unlike the conventional coding schemes the AMY coder, for a macroblock in a frame, selects two best matching blocks among several preceding frames. The best matching block, called a primary block, is used for motion compensation of the destination macroblock. The other block, called an auxiliary block, replaces the primary block in case of its loss at the decoder. When a primary block is corrupted or lost during transmission, the decoder can efficiently and simply suppress error propagation to the subsequent frames by replacing the block with an auxiliary block. This scheme has an advantage of reducing both the number and the impact of error propagations. We implemented the proposed coder by modifying H.263 standard coding and evaluated the performance of our proposed scheme in the simulation. The simulation results show that AMV coder is more efficient than the H.263 baseline coder at the high packet loss rate.

  • The portion of header in H.264 gets higher than those of previous standards instead of its better compression efficiency. Therefore, this paper proposes a new technique to compress the header of H.264. Unifying a sentence elementary in H.264, H.264 does not consider the distribution of element which be encoded and uses existing Exp-Golomb method, but it is uneffective for variable length coding. Most of the header are block type(s) and motion vector difference(s), and there are redundancies in the header of H.264. The redundancies in the header of H.264 which are analyzed in this paper are three. There are frequently appearing symbols and non-frequently appearing symbols in block types. And when mode 8 is selected in macroblock, all of four sub-macroblock types are transferred. At last, same values come in motion vector difference, especially '0.' This paper proposes the algorithm using type code and quadtree, and with them presents the redundant information of header in H.264. The type code indicates shape of the macroblock and the quadtree does the tree structured motion compensation. Experimental results show that proposed algorithm achieves lower total number of encoded bits over JM12.4 up to 32.51% bit reduction.
