Analysis of Solute Transport with Steady State Groundwater Flow in Layered Aquifer (정상 지하수흐름을 갖는 층상대수층에서의 용질이동해석)

  • The Nanji-Do ladnfill is an ill-conditioned reclaimed land without pollution intercepting facilities, and has high ground water table and deep stratum. The purpose of this study is to analyze the solute transport in steady-state groundwater flow and to predict the solute dispersion in Nanji-Do landfill using HST-3D model. As results, the groundwater flows radially outward from the center of No. 1 and No. 2 landfills, and large amount of runoff is moved into Han River. The predicted relative concentration of total dissolved solute(TDS) at two years later was 0.25 in the weathering zone, 0.26 in the lower alluvium, and 0.28 in the upper alluvium. Thus, the further pollution to bottom rock and Han River was predicted by comparing the corresponding present values of 0.29, 0.32 and 0.35.

Composition of Degradation and Stabilization in Landfilled Waste (매립폐기물의 분해 성상 및 안정화)

  • This study was carried out to analyze the composition of landfill generation gas using vertical pipe wells installed at landfill. The characteristics of composed waste were examined by the open-cut test at H. landfill in Pusan. The waste compositions of landfill layer by Open-cut test indicated that organic matter was average $4.6{\sim}8.78%$ in each landfill. $CH_4$ compositions of gas in each landfill were $49.71{\sim}50.45%$(A-point), $50.39{\sim}53.74%$(B-point), and $58.76{\sim}61.62%(C-point), respectively. The chemical formula of organic matter left in the underground was $C_{36.3}H_{76}O_{30}N_{0.3}S_{0.1}$ Underground temperatures were changed to $18.8{\sim}25.8^{\circ}C$ when the ambient temperature was about $13.4^{\circ}C$. Temperatures with passed times in A, B and C-lysimeter were about $21.1{\sim}22.5^{\circ}C,\;30{\sim}32.5^{\circ}C$ and $35{\sim}38.5^{\circ}C$, respectively. After about 65 day, decomposition rates of organic matter in A, B and C-lysimeter were 9.9%, 14.9% and 22.3%, respectively.

Distribution of Gas Extruded from Sanitary Landfill (쓰레기 매립지에서 대기중에 유출하는 가스 분포)

  • This study presents a surveying of methane and carbon dioxide at sanitary landfills. The following results are obtained. (1) The majority of methane and the half of carbon dioxide pour out from vertical gas vents. (2) The quantity of carbon dioxide in cove. soil was greater than methane. (3) Even though gas extrusion in side slop area was small, the quantity of gas extrusion in side slop area was much greater than in coversoil area as especially carbon dioxide rate. (4) As were carried raw refuse layer, methane extrusion was trace, but carbon dioxide was large. (5) Gas extrusion quantity were changed by the compaction of soil, and the operating area of refuse. (6) Carbon dioxide portioned much larger in the whole landfill, but methane portioned much larger in gas vent and coversoil.

  • This research was intended to verify the stability of landfill final cover using SRSL(Self Recovering Sustainable Liner) with regard to differential settlements due to the degradation of waste and so on in a waste landfill. Numerical analysis was performed using FLAC 2D software program with input parameters based on soil characteristic tests and reference data after the blank was designed in order to represent the decomposition condition of waste. The maximum settlement of landfill cover was calculated to investigate the structural stability of landfill cover with the different condition of settlement width, settlement depth, and number of differential settlements. The allowable maximum deformation rate of SRSL, which was calculated using field permeability tests, was 6 mm. The analysis showed that SRSL was stable in case of a differential settlement width not exceeding 24.5% of total cover width.

A Study on Methohs Reducing Groundwater Contamination Around Kimpo Landfill (김포매립지 주변 지하수오염 확산 저감 방법 연구)

  • In order to reduce the groundwater contamination around the Kimpo landfill in Korea by the leakage of the leachate within it, The method establishing 5 sets of Radial Collector Well Laterals(RCWLs) within the landfill, the method utilizing the wells dewatering the condensed water, the method establishing an interception wall to the 2nd layer at the circumference of the landfill and 22 sets of RCWLs within it, and the method establishing an interception wall to the 3rd layer and 40 sets of RCWLs were studied. Hydraulic parameters were measured for this study and then the groundwater flow and contaminant transport systems around the Kimpo landfill were analyzed with the MODFLOW and MT3D models. Conclusively, the method establishing an interception wall to the 2nd layer and 22 sets of RCWLs was evaluated as the most stable and economical option to reduce groundwater contamination concentration below drinking water standards.

Stability Analysis of Waste Landfill Using Multi-interface Element Numerical Method (복합 경계면요소 수치해석에 의한 매립지 안정성 해석)

  • A finite element nonlinear stress-deformation model with multi-interface element is applied to the stability analysis of waste landfill slope. Strength parameters of waste and geosynthetic materials are obtained from the triaxial test of waste and the direct shear test of geosynthetics, respectively. The landfill models used for the numerical models are fit to regulations of the Korean waste management law. The results of the strength tests showed linear behavior for the waste and nonlinear behavior for the eosynthectic materials. The stability analysis with multi-interface element for the geosynthetic materials in the liner system showed large shear stress and slippage at the boundary of the foundation and the slope of the waste fill. This analysis verified the necessity of multi-interface analysis for waste landfills with composite liners.

Residual Settlement for Dredged Soil Deposit Considering Stress History in Incheon Area (인천지역 준설토의 응력이력을 고려한 잔류 침하량)

  • To identify the reclamation history formed by top dredged soil reclamation layer over the original ground, various field tests and laboratory tests were conducted. Especially when the original ground was not completely consolidated, CPTu test was carried out to calculate rational settlement due to the banking load. CPTu test results showed that the degree of consolidation of weak clay ground by dredged reclamation was on average 80%. As the research area was not completely consolidated by dredged reclamation in the past, the consolidation settlement should account for the residual settlement (20%) in the case of additional banking load. When the degree of consolidation of the original ground was not taken into account, the residual consolidation was expected in excessive settlement (up to 20%) and in such case PBD (Plastic Board Drain) was not effective in obtaining desired degree of consolidation.

  • Groundwater contamination caused by landfill leachate leads to various changes in aquifer environment according to the characteristics of incoming contaminants and aquifer geochemistry. These changes in aquifer environment are known to contribute to the natural attenuation phenomena of contaminants. The knowledge on changes in aquifer environment is necessary to determine the extent of groundwater pollution, to assess risk of the pollution, and to develop an appropriate remediation technologies. In this paper, the changes in aquifer environment caused by landfill leachate development of various redox zones-and the natural attenuation phenomena occurred in each redox zone are reviewed. From this review, an appropriate research direction and control action is presented for the groundwater pollutions caused by unsanitary landfills scattered across the nation.
