Present and Future Agricultural Extension System of Malawi (말라위 농촌지도사업의 현재와 미래)

  • Malawi's agricultural extension system has been subjected to a number of criticisms in recent times for failing to contribute significantly to agricultural development and for not responding to the needs of the smallholder farmers. Despite this, extension is still seen as key to improving poverty and rural livelihoods.There is a number of challenges facing extension that require a response from the public sector and other stakeholders. A clear and positive response to these challenges will help shape the future of agricultural extension in Malawi for the benefit of all farmers and the attainment of the broad policy objectives of government: democratization, market liberalization, decentralization, HIV/AIDS crisis, shrinking public sector resources, public sector reform, and co-ordination, etc. The mission is to provide pluralistic demand driven extensions services and promote equalisation and co-ordination in service provision in order to achieve food security at household level, there-by reducing poverty. On the other hand the vision is that 'All farmers' demand and access high quality extension services from those best able to provide them'. DAES implements its extension policy through the District Agricultural Extension Services System (DAESS), based on Model Village Approach.

A survey research on the primary teachers' perception of social emotional learning in Malawi (말라위 초등교사의 사회정서학습에 대한 인식조사 연구)

  • This study aims to investigate the primary teachers' perception of social emotional learning (SEL) in Malawi. To achieve this purpose, total 78 questionnaires were gathered from 9 primary schools in rural area. The data was analyzed with independent-samples t-test, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The results of this study are follows. First, the sub-factors of the Malawian primary teachers' perception of SEL shows that Comfort is 4.10, Commitment is 4.59, and Culture is 3.78. Second, there was a significant difference in the Malawian primary teachers' perception by age, years of teaching, and participation to in-service training about SEL among the individual characteristics. Third, the Malawian primary teachers' degree of implementation of SEL in school was 4.01, and there was a significant difference by years of teaching. Forth, among the sub-factors of teachers' perception of SEL, Comfort had a positive effect on the degree of implementation of SEL. This result implied that the reason why Malawian primary teachers had difficulty in implementing SEL in the school might be not a lack of individual competence but feel uncomfortable with implementation. Therefore, in order to implement SEL in the Malawi school, it is necessary to support teachers so they have confidence and comfort psychologically.

Factors Affecting the Performance of Agricultural Project from the Perspectives of Agriculture Extension Workers - A Case Study of Malawi - (농촌지도사의 관점에서 본 농촌개발 성과 영향요인 - 말라위 사례 -)

  • This study aims to identify the factors influencing the perofrmance of agricultural projects for small farmers in Malawi. This cross-sectional study was conducted to discover the factors behind the slow performance of agricultural projects in alleviating poverty. The research was conducted in the Karonga and Phalombe Districts in the northern and southern parts of Malawi, respectively. The data were collected through a structured questionnaire survey administered to 82 agriculture extension workers, and a multiple regression analysis was conducted. The results indicated that farmers' socioeconomic factors, including high illiteracy and poverty rates, poor participation regarding project implementation, and high dependency syndrome, significantly affected the performance of agricultural projects. Within the projects them selves, this study discovered that there was no consistent flow of funds. This greatly affected the schedule of project activities, thereby compromising performance. The study recommends that the government and all relevant stakeholders work jointly to alleviate poverty. It is especially important to ensure that smallholder farmers are equipped with self-help capabilities. In addition, it is critical to examine the issues of funding disbursement.

  • 2011년 6월 기술표준원과 아프리카지역표준화기구(ARSO)가 체결한 양해각서 'Action Plan'의 일환으로 표준화, 적합성평가와 측정 분야에 대한 한-아프리카 초청교육이 지난 10월 5일~15일까지 10일간 진행되었다. 교육에는 카메룬, 에티오피아, 가나, 케냐, 말라위, 나미비아, 나이지리아, 르완다, 탄자니아, 튀니지의 아프리카 10개국의 실무자 17명이 참가하였다. 초청교육에 참가했던 탄자니아 실무자 매리 밀라 씨의 참관기를 소개한다.

The Situation of Mushroom Cultivation Growing at High Temperature in Africa Malawi (아프리카 말라위의 고온성 버섯재배 현황)

  • 1) 버섯종균 생산 시스템 개선 버섯의 품질과 수량을 좌우하는 주요 요인은 종균의 활력이다. 그러나 말라위에서는 종균의 활력이 낮아 조그마한 350cc 음료수 병에 배양 완성하는데 20일이 소요되는 등 노동력의 비효율성을 개선하였다. 따라서 350cc 병을 3500cc 비닐봉지로 개선하여 입봉하는데 소요되는 시간을 10배 이상으로 단축 개선하였다. 또한 곡립종균을 액체종균으로 대처한 결과 균사생장 속도가 빨랐으며 작업속도가 빨라졌다. 곡립 수수를 밀로 대체하여 종균제조 노동력을 효율적으로 전환하였다. 2) 버섯재배사 환경관리 개선 버섯재배의 4대 환경조건은 온도, 습도, 환기, 광이다. 그러나 말라위의 버섯재배사는 4대 환경조건 조절을 자연상태에 의존하고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 비닐로 커버된 상태에서 문을 닫아두어 과습이 되고 환기가 되지않았다. 이를 개선하기 위하여 직경 5cm 환기공을 버섯재배사 당 4개씩 만들도록 지도하였다. 3) 버섯배지 개선 말라위에서는 옥수수 대를 잘라 버섯배지로 주로 이용하고 있다. 이를 개선하여 말라위 북부지역(다광)에 대규모 사탕수수 공장을 방문하여 사탕수수 박을 이용하여 버섯재배 기술을 교육하였다. 이를 이용함으로서 버섯 균사생장속도를 빠르게 하고 균사량의 축적을 높이도록 하여 고품질 다수확하는데 교육을 하고 컨설팅을 실시하여 개선하였다. 4) 버섯 배지 야외발효 후 지면재배 시도로 시간 단축과 비용절감 말라위 버섯배지 혼합제조법은 옥수수대 한가지로서 영양원이 없다. 이를 개선하여 배지를 수분을 흡수시킨 후 야외 퇴적하므로서 배지의 물리성을 개선하고 야외발효 과정 중 양분이 합성되어 양질의 배지를 만드는 방법이다. 야외발효한 배지를 봉지에 담아 균상에 입상하는 불편함과 나무로 만들어진 균상대의 과습으로 인한 곰팡이 발생과 개미 침입으로 썩는 것 등을 방지하기 위하여 지면재배 방법으로 개선하였다. 이 지면재배는 균상 만드는 나무재료와 인건비 절감. 병해충 발생 방제 뿐만아니라 고품질 다수확할 수 있는 방법으로 개선 교육과 시범 시연을 실시하였다.

Consumers' Perceptions and Valuation of an Organic Chicken in Malawi (유기농 닭에 대한 말라위 소비자 인식 및 가치 추정)

  • In general, an increase in consumer income increases interest in safe foods and increases consumption of environmental friendly foods. Meanwhile, even in Malawi, interest in safe food and environmentally friendly food has been increasing due to increase in per capita income, but research related to this has not been done yet. The purpose of this study is to estimate the value of environmentally friendly foods in Malawi consumers. For this purpose, we surveyed the consumption patterns and estimated the value of organic chicken for consumers visiting supermarkets. As a value estimation technique, Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) was used. Probit model analysis showed that price, expenditure on regular chicken, and knowledge of organic food affect the willingness to pay for organic chicken. CVM analysis shows that Malawi supermarket consumers are willing to pay MK2,514 (3.59) dollars per kilo of organic chicken, which is 25.7% higher than the average price of a regular chicken. Thus, Malawi supermarket consumers can deduce that they have a higher value for environmentally friendly food than regular food. These findings can be used in formulating policies on food safety by government officials, organic chicken meat marketing strategies by supermarket mangers, decision making to enhance organic food production by producers, in order to develop organic food industry.
