  • In this study an iterative procedure for the analysis of drilled shafts was proposed on the basis of the load transfer mechanism. Special attention was given to the estimation of bearing capacity of drilled shafts which was compared with driven piles, and then with the results of pile load test. The load displacement at the pile head was calculated by load than sfer curves (t -z curves, q-z curves) by using Vljayvergiya, Castelli and hi -linear models. Bab ed on the analytical results, it is found that the behavior of drilled shafts is different from that of driven piles the smaller the skin friction mobilized at the pile-boil interface, the smaller the development of the bearing capacity. Hence the greater pile head movement is required to mobilize the same mainitride of bearing capacity. This trend is more noticeable in sand than in clay. It is also found that as the length-todiameter ratios increase, the dirtference of ultimate bearing capacity between drilled shafts and driven piles is becoming lass ger in sand, but it is minor in clay.

  • In this study the behavior of pile groups is investigated experimentally. Special attention is given to the load transfer characteristics of pile groups and to the evaluation of the group effects under vertical and horizontal loadings. In the laboratory experiments, vertical and lateral loadings were imposed on model piles in sand. Model piles made of PVC embedded in Joomoonjin sand were used in this study. Pile arrangements($2\times2,\; 3\times3$) and pile spacings(2.5D, 5.OD, 7.5D) were considered. Load-transfer curves(t-z, q-z and p-y curves), load-deflection curves and group interaction factors were obtained from the experimental results. The group interaction factors under both vertical and horizontal loadings were proposed for the cases of $2\times2\; and\; 3\times3$ pile groups with varying ratios of pile spacings. p-multipliers in this study were found for the individual piles in $2\times2\; and\; 3\times3$ pile groups.

  • In this study, the reliability of the lateral spring constant (k1) applied during design of pile foundation for bridge abutment was evaluated. To do this, the reliability of the factors related to the prediction of the lateral displacement of the abutment pile foundation, which was designed based on the displacement method proposed by Chang (1937), was analyzed. The data used for analysis were the design statements of ◯◯ bridge and ◯◯ IC2 bridge. Then, it was derived by comparing with the numerical analysis (p-y analysis) based on the basic data.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the behavior of superstructure considering several factors such as change of pile rigidity, soil characteristics, and the constraint condition of support. The results of this study are as follows: 1. Pile-rigidity computed by the rotating deformed plane method is continuously varied up to approximately 5D(D=diameter of pile) below the ground level. This result is consistent with the previous study$^{(12)}$, in which the pile deformation occurs at approximately $3{\sim}6$ times of pile diameter from the ground level. 2. For bridge structure-pile system, analytical results of internal forces and deformations show different values for modified pile rigidity and unchanged pile rigidity. 3. Detaild analysis considering modified pile rigidity is required for the long-span bridge design with structure pile system.

  • Model pile pull-out tests have been executed to investigate the characteristics of the critical relative displacement at which the critical pile skin resistance is mobilized. Test result shows that the critical relative displacement is neither constant nor pile size dependent, but it is the most closely related with the magnitude of the critical skin resistance. The empirical relationship between the two quantities has been established. Behavior of centrifuge physical models of skin-resistance-related problems has been investigated on a quantitative basis by a computational method. A pile downdrag problem has been employed as an example of the skin-resistance-related problems. A simple transfer function type method has been developed for the analysis of the downdrag. It is concluded from the analysis that centrifuge physical modeling of skin-resistance-related problems may lead to an erroneous result on an unconservative side, as may have been expected due to the violation of the similarity rule by the quantity of the critical relative displacement.

  • The settlement limit concept is generally adopted as design criteria of rock-socketed pile foundations, therefore, the load-displacement$(\sigma-\sigma)$ behavior of the rock-socketed piles should be well understood at the design stage, which, however, is hard to achieve due to its complexity. To help this out, field pile load tests are executed on cast-in-situ concrete piles, first, to figure out the $\sigma$-$\delta$ behavior of rock-socketed piles. Next, the $\sigma-\sigma$ relations of the piles are simulated numerically using commercial package program(ELAC) varying a couple of input data which are sensitive in shaping the $\sigma$-$\delta$ curves. Finally, the relation between the best input data for the numerical simulations and the geotechnical field data are cultivated to generalize the numerical simulation procedures, which enables geotechnical engineers to predict the $\sigma$-$\delta$ behavior at the design stage, if appropriate geotechnical field data are provided.

  • When an embankment is performed on the soft ground of the coastal with possibilities of lateral flow, lateral displacement occurs to the bottom of the surface of the ground. This lateral displacement can affect existing infra structures that are buried in the adjacent underground by causing a displacement in the nearby base foundation. Soft ground supporting piles and reinforced piles were applied as reinforcement remedies against the lateral displacement. And for the effect analysis, numerical analysis was performed under the classifications of non-reinforcement base and reinforced base. The result of the numerical analysis showed that the reinforced piles had more effects by 1.9 times than non-reinforced piles. Soft ground supporting piles showed better effects by 2.6 times than non-reinforced piles. Additionally, between the two reinforced remedies, soft ground supporting piles showed greater effects by 1.3-1.6 times than the reinforced piles.

  • In this study, the centrifuge tests and numerical analyses were performed to investigate the lateral flow behavior and stability of abutment when high filling was applied on the soft ground improved by SCP. The centrifuge model tests and numerical analyses were fulfilled in the case of the back of abutment filled by EPS (case 1) and soil (case 2), and the potentiometer was installed on the abutment and fill to measure the vertical and horizontal displacement at the top of abutment. As a result of the centrifugal tests, the horizontal displacement of abutment in the case 1 was 1.4cm that is almost coincide with the results of numerical and satisfy the allowable standard. On the other hand, the horizontal displacement of abutment in the case 2 was 12 cm that is 18% greater than that of numerical analysis and exceed the allowable standard. As a result of analysis, the maximum horizontal displacement of pile was 1.26 cm in case 1 that satisfies the criterion of allowable horizontal displacement (1.5 cm). In contrast, the maximum horizontal displacement of pile was 1.005 m in case 2 that greatly exceeds the allowable horizontal displacement.

  • For the last decade, the hi-directional testing method has been advantageous over the conventional pile load testing method in many aspects. However, because the hi-directional test uses a loading mechanism entirely different from that of the conventional pile load testing method, many investigators and practicing engineers have been concerned that the hi-directional test would give inaccurate results, especially about the pile head settlement behavior. Therefore, a hi-directional load test and the conventional top-down load test were executed on 1.5 m diameter cast-in-situ concrete piles at the same time and site. Strain gauges were placed on the piles. The two tests gave similar load transfer curves at various depth of piles. However, the top-down equivalent curve constructed from the hi-directional load test results predicted the pile head settlement under the pile design load to be about one half of that predicted by the conventional top-down load test. To improve the prediction accuracy of the top-down equivalent curve, a simple method that accounts for the pile compression is proposed. It was also shown that the strain gauge measurement data from the hi-directional load test could reproduce almost the same top-down curve.
