The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for improving the life satisfaction of elderly women with chronic diseases by analyzing the factors affecting life satisfaction. Using the 6th Korean Retirement and Income Study, 1846 elderly women aged 65 years or older with chronic diseases were included in the study. In order to investigate life satisfaction, instrumental activities of daily living and interpersonal relationship according to general characteristics, descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA were used. We used hierarchical multiple regression analysis to find out the factors affecting life satisfaction. The results showed that elderly women with chronic illness were more satisfied with life when they were younger, spouses, higher education, proper sleep, regular exercise, and regular health checkups. This study has limitations in that the number of chronic diseases, types, and psychosocial aspects are not considered. However, it is significant that the elderly panel with the representative of the whole nation was used to grasp the life satisfaction of the elderly women with chronic diseases. Therefore, in order to improve the life satisfaction of elderly women with chronic illness, appropriate sleep, exercise, instrumental daily life ability, interpersonal intervention will be needed.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of depression, self-esteem and daily life ability on suicidal ideation in elderly people with chronic illness. The subjects were 170 outpatients and inpatients in a general hospital in D city. After conducting questionnaires for data collection, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression analysis were performed and analyzed using SPSS 12.0 / win program. The results showed that suicidal ideation was influenced by gender, health status, chronic disease diagnosis, and experience of suicide attempt, with a positive correlation with depression and a negative correlation with daily life ability. The suicide attempt experience, depression, self-esteem and daily living ability showed 50.8% explanatory power against suicidal ideation. In order to reduce suicidal ideation, it is necessary to reduce suicidal ideation of elderly people with chronic diseases by managing an intervention program that reduces depression and improves daily life ability.
The increased needs for medical cost containment and the quality of life improvement for the low-income elderly with chronic disease require the complementary relationship between hospital care and community health services. This study investigated the current status of the linkage between Korean hospital care and community services using Seoul Welfare Panel Study(SWPS) data. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the effects of experiences of hospitalization and outpatient health services on use and needs of community health services. The analysis results indicated that the elderly with chronic disease who have not experienced outpatient health services were unlikely to receive health and social services in the community. Even those who have experienced hospitalization were not provided complementary health services in the community despite the increasing demand.

This study determines the difference in prevalence of anemia and hemoglobin concentration between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and control groups in the elderly. Moreover, this study also examines the prevalence of anemia and hemoglobin concentration according to the severity of COPD in the elderly. Medical records of 8150 participants who answered the 7th National Health and Nutritional Survey conducted in 2016 were reviewed, and a total of 694 participants was included in the analysis. Participants were classified into two groups: COPD and control groups. Laboratory studies on hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cell concentration and prevalence of anemia were collected. Subgroup analysis was also conducted according to the severity of COPD. No significant differences were determined for the prevalence of anemia and hemoglobin concentration between both groups. Hemoglobin concentration was significantly higher in the COPD group. Although not statistically significant, there was a tendency for decrease in the prevalence of anemia and increase in the hemoglobin concentration as the severity of COPD increased. Our findings present specific data about the prevalence of anemia and hemoglobin concentration in elderly patients with COPD. Hence, we propose that occurrence of anemia in elderly patients with COPD requires further evaluation of the causes.

This study explored whether the transition to living with a chronic disease changes the level of depression symptoms among middle-aged and older adults in South Korea. We hypothesize that the transition to living with chronic disease leads to a higher level of depressive symptoms. A nationally representative sample (N = 6,284) of adults 45 years and older from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA) was analyzed. Multi-regression modeling was used to examine the association between the diagnosis of chronic disease and the level of depressive symptoms in patients. The findings highlight the need for policy makers, clinicians, as well as patients and their caregivers to become more aware of mental health risks in patients diagnosed with chronic diseases, particularly first-time patients. This study contributes to encouraging greater psychosocial support, including monitoring the level of depressive symptoms of patients who develop chronic conditions and providing appropriate treatments for those at the highest risk.
This study aims to identify depressive symptoms status and factors to affect depressive symptoms in the elderly. The research selected 1,429 adults aged over 65, who appeared with depressive symptoms, from the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2012. We analyzed states of depressive symptoms using descriptive statistics. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the main factors associated with depressive symptoms in the elderly. The result shows that depressive symptoms in the elderly is significantly associated with gender, age, income level, subjective health status, smoking and the number of chronic diseases. Females, higher age, lower income, lower subjective health status, smoking and the higher the number of chronic diseases were the significant factors of higher depressive symptoms. Therefore, it is necessary to develop effective social programs and individualized approach to improve the quality of life in the elderly. In the future, these findings can be used as important data for health care policy and assessment.
