This study was carried out for the plate and frame membrane modules equipped with and without plastic protuberances on the support frame in order to determine the effect of eddy flow induced by the protuberances on permeate flux. The initial time for rapidly declined permeate flux on the module with protuberances was delayed twice or more than that on the module without protuberances when kaolin solution was permeated at the operating pressures from 0.4 to 1.6 bar. Also decreasing ratio of the kaolin solution to pure water flux for module with protuberances was 1 to 5% lower than that for module without protuberances. The flux improvement due to protuberances at laminar flow corresponding Reynolds number 1,750 was about double as compared with that in the transition flow region. In general, the kaolin fouling reduction for the plate module with protuberances during initial filtration process was very effective, even though the permeate flux after 60 minutes filtration did not increase significantly.
The pretreatment for COD removal of acrylic wastewater and separation characteristics of ultrafiltration hollow fiber type module and reverse osmosis spiral wound type module with the variation of applied pressure and temperature were discussed. Thc optimum washing time of membranes was decided with long team operation and the degree of fouling was discussed with operating time. Permeate flux was decreased rapidly at 14 hrs and that of reverse osmosis membrane was indicated similarly. CaO find sand filter for the first step, neutralization process with treated acrylic wastewater as the second step, UF/RO processes were used as final strep. It was shown treat COD and TDS were below allowable discharge value with the result.
Effects of aeration intensity on local fouling were investigated in submerged membrane modules. Higher liquid velocities were observed at the section with the lower fiber packing density. The liquid velocity is increased with increasing the gas-liquid injection factor. The high shear stress coincided with the high liquid velocity. The shear stress increases with the increasing of gas-liquid injection factor and the liquid velocity improves with the increasing of gas-liquid injection factor. Irreversible fouling resistance ($R_{ir}$) of the fiber position is significant in a local region of high suction pressure near the suction point of the fiber (position 1). The ratio of $R_{ir}/R_m$ and $R_{ir}/R_r$ of position 1 was highest compared to the position 2 and 3. Irreversible fouling resistances results confirmed the preferential deposition of foulants near the suction part of the fiber where the local suction pressure is the highest and correspondingly, more particles are accumulated to the membrane surface. The effects of local fouling along the fiber length are significant factors to optimize the design of submerged modules.

This paper describes the preliminary study on the development of multi-stage membrane demonstration plant for removal of carbon dioxide from flue gas stream being emitted from LNG boiler in thermal power generation plant. The prerequisite requirement is to design and develop the membrane process producing a $99\%\;CO_2$ with $90\%$ recovery from LNG flue gas of 1,000 $Nm^3$/day. Asymmetric polyethersulfone hollow fiber membranes and membrane modules developed in this laboratory[1] were used in this study. Using the permeation data for the hollow fiber membranes, modelling on the membrane module and multi-stage membrane process was done to meet the requirement condition of the process design. The effects of the operating pressure of feed and permeate side and feed concentration on $CO_2$ purity and recovery were investigated experimentally with the developed hollow fiber modules. These experimental results matched well with theoretical modelling results.

To determine the pervaporation separation characteristics of 1-butanol/water mixtures, PEI/PDMS hollow fiber membrane module commercialized by Airrane Co. was subjected to both lab and pilot tests. The 1% 1-butanol of 1-butanol/water feed mixture was used. The flux of $133g/m^2hr$ and separation factor of 23.4 at $30^{\circ}C$ were obtained whereas the $505g/m^2hr$ and 5.1 were measured at $50^{\circ}C$. When compared with the performance of the hollow fiber PDMS membrane by Nagasep Co., the higher flux of $10{\sim}20g/m^2hr$ was obtained by the module of Airrane Co. In order to realized the durability of Airrane Co. module, the long-term test of 35 days has been conducted and as a result, the flux $510{\sim}520g/m^2hr$ and separation factor 20~25 were maintained with the initial values.
