Biological Evaluation of Water Quality and Community Structure of Benthic Macroinvertebrates in the Pyungchang River Water System, Gangwon-do, Korea (강원도 평창강 일대 저서성 대형무척추동물의 군집구조 및 수질의 생물학적 평가)

  • A biological assessment of water quality was carried out in the Pyungchang River water system, Gangwon-do, Korea from September 1999 through August 2000. The benthic macroinvertebrates collected seasonally from 15 field sites were identified mostly up to species level. Benthic macroinvertebrates composed of 109 species, 77 genera, 31 families, 10 orders, 4 classes in 4 phyla. Dominant species occurring in all the field sites were mostly ephemeropterans and trichopterans. On the basis of the values of species diversity and biological indices such as Trent Biotic Index (TBI) Modified Biological Monitoring Working Party Score System (BMWP) and Biotic Index (BI), the Pyungchang River Water system was generally regarded as showing oligosaprobic water quality.

An Experimental Study on the Effects of Tabs and Small Proturbances Inside Nozzle on Supersonic Jet Flowfield (노즐 탭과 노즐 내부 낮은 돌출부가 초음속 제트유동장에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The effects of vortex generators, in the form of small delta-shaped tabs or thin tapes at an axi-symmetric supersonic nozzle exit, on the characteristics of supersonic jet flowfields are investigated by Schlieren images and Pitot-tube measurements. Small tabs as small as 1 % of the nozzle exit area can introduce streamwise vortices and produce a significant effect on the jet flowfield downstream of the nozzle. The effect is stronger for the cases of under-expanded jet than over- and perfect-expanded cases, introducing a larger flow entrainment. The effects of the angle of tabs with respect to the flow direction are also investigated, and for over-expanded jet cases, it is found that the tabs bended toward upstream can weaken the interaction strength and remove the Mach disc in the jet flowfield. Introduction of small proturbances inside the nozzle surface by attachment of thin tapes is also found to change the pressure distribution in the circumferential direction of the flowfield. Its effect is also found to be dependent on the jet expansion ratio.

Change Area Detection using Color and Edge Gradient Covariance Features (색상과 에지 공분산 특징을 이용한 변화영역 검출)

  • This paper proposes a change detection method based on the covariance matrices of color and edge gradient in a color video. The YCbCr color format was used instead of RGB. The color covariance matrix was calculated from the CbCr-channels and the edge gradient covariance matrix was calculated from the Y-channels. The covariance matrices were effectively calculated at each pixel by calculating the sum, squared sum, and sum of two values' multiplication of a rectangle area using the integral images from a background image. The background image was updated by a running the average between the background image and a current frame. The change areas in a current frame image against the background were detected using the Mahalanobis distance, which is a measure of the statistical distance using covariance matrices. The experimental results of an expressway color video showed that the proposed approach can effectively detect change regions for color and edge gradients against the background.

Research about Size Effect of Solid Particles on Erosion Resistance of Aluminum Alloy and Infrared Windows (충돌 입자의 크기에 따른 알루미늄 합금과 적외선창의 입자침식 저항성 연구)

  • In this research, experimental study about size effect of solid particles on erosion resistance is presented. A high-density polyethylene particle with a mm-sized diameter is accelerated using a two-stage light gas gun up to Mach number of approximately 3.0. An accelerated particle impacts aluminum alloy such as Al1050 and Al6061 T6, and infrared windows such as ZnS and sapphire specimens. For the aluminum alloy, craters that form on the surface of the specimens are measured to characterize the erosion resistance of the material. For the infrared windows, repetitive tests are conducted until a linear or circumferential crack is found to create damage threshold curves that define a material's erosive resistance. From the comparison of test data for various sizes of high-density polyethylene particles, it is found that erosion resistance of material is linearly dependent on the size of particles.

A Study on Model Establishment and Structural Analysis for Gun Blast Load (기총 폭발 하중에 대한 모델 수립과 구조 해석에 관한 연구)

  • A mathematical model, GUNBLAST, of blast waves emitted from a gun muzzle is established, and structural response analyses for the blast load are performed. The blast wave can be divided into two kinds of waves, free field and reflected blast waves. In this research, the free field blast wave model is established by the use of a scaling approach, and the reflected blast wave is calculated by using the oblique shock theory and computational fluid dynamic calculation. GUNBLAST is applied to two kinds of structural models. To investigate the effect of the muzzle distance from a structural surface, the blast waves on a plate for various muzzle distances are compared to uniform loads. Moreover, the transient response analysis of an aircraft wing model with a 12.7mm gun is carried out by using MSC/NASTRAN. From the results, it can be shown that the blast wave can cause broad random vibration and high frequency damage to equipments mounted in the aircraft.

Combustion Test for a Supersonic Combustor Using a Direct-Connected Facility (직결형 설비를 이용한 초음속 연소기 연소 시험)

  • A combustion test for a supersonic combustor was conducted using a direct-connected type supersonic combustor test facility. The facility was verified for the capability of simulating required flow conditions. The test condition was maintained at Mach 2.0, $915^{\circ}C$ and 496 kPa for 15 s. Using gaseous hydrogen as the fuel, the combustor model was also tested for its ignition and flame holding capability at the fuel equivalence ratio of 0.12. Combustion efficiency was 71%, and the supersonic flow regime was obtained at this test condition.

  • When supersonic underexpanded jets are exhausted from the nozzle, complex shock cell configurations such as barrel shock, expansion fan, Mach disc, and exhaust-gas jet boundary are appeared repetitively. The shock cell is smeared by turbulence dissipation and disappeared in long distance from the nozzle. When underexpanded jet is suddenly impinged on a flat plate, it forms very complex flow structure. In this paper, we solve compressible Wavier-Stokes equation adapting finite volume method to obtain jet impingement flow structure and compare calculated data with experimental ones. It is shown that numerical simulation data are in good agreement with experimental one in a short distance between nozzle exit and flat plate and little influence of underexpanded ratio is appeared in jet impingement now distribution.

Regional bond strength of dentin bonding systems to pulp chamber dentin (치수강 상아질에 대한 상아질 접착제의 결합 강도에 관한 연구)

  • 본 연구는 치수강 상아질 부위 및 상아질 접착제 종류에 따른 결합 강도를 측정하고 이들 사이의 상관관계를 구명하고자 시행되었다 45개의 대구치를 포매 후, 대조군에서는 교합면 법랑질 제거 후 #600 SiC paper까지 순차연마하여 상아질을 노출시켰고, 실험군에서는 치수강 개방 후 1시간동안 NaOCl에 보관 후 axial wall과 pulpal floor를 노출시켰다. 노출된 상아질 면에 상아질 접착제를 적용한 후 Z-100을 충전한 다음 40초간 광중합하였다. 사용된 상아질 접착제는 Scotchbond Multi-Purpose와 Single Bond, Clearfil SE Bond였다. $37^{\circ}C$ 증류수에 24시간 보관 후, 저속 diamond saw를 이용하여 0.7mm 두께로 수직절단하고 고속 diamond point(#104)로 단면적 $1{mm}^2$가 되도록 시편을 제작하고, Universal testing machine에서 미세인장 결합강도를 측정하였다. 1. 모든 상아질 접착제의 미세인장강도는 대조군, axial wall군, pulpal floor군 순으로 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 2. 대조군에서 SM과 BB는 SE에 비해 유의성 있게 높은 결합강도를 나타내었다(p<0.05). 3. SM과 SB는 대조군에 비해 axial wall군과 pulpal floor군에서 유의성있게 낮은 결합강도를 보였으나, SE에서는 pulpal floor군만이 유의성 있게 낮은 결합강도를 보였다(p<0.05). 4. Axial wall군과 pulpal floor군에서는 상아질 접착제의 종류에 따른 유의차를 보이지 않았다. 5. 전자현미경 소견에서는 대조군에 비해 axial wall군과 pulpal floor군이 더 부드러운 접착 계면을 나타내었다. 혼성층의 두께는 결합강도의 감소와는 관련이 없었다.

Recirculation Characteristics by the Inlet Angle and Dome Size of a Liquid Ramjet Combustor using PIV Method (PIV측정을 통한 램제트 연소기의 유입각과 돔 크기에 따른 선회 유동 특성)

  • Flow characteristics in a liquid fuel ramjet combustor were investigated using the PIV method. The combustor has two rectangular inlets that form a $90^{\circ}$ angle each other. Three cases of test combustors are made in which those inlet angles are $30^{\circ},\;45^{\circ}\;and\;60^{\circ}$. The experiments were performed in a water tunnel test with the same Reynolds number as Mach 0.3 at the inlet. PIV software was developed to measure the characteristics of the flow field in the combustor. A large and complex recirculating flow was measured in the dome area with 4 different dome size. Experimental results shows that 1/3 dome size of combustor diameter is suitable and smaller inlet angle provide large recirculation flow at the dome of combustor as a frame holder in this experimental ranges but need to consider secondary recirculation flow in a junction region to optimize the configuration of ramjet combustor.

  • An experimental study to improve the impingement characteristics of the assist gas in laser cutting was carried out. For various assist-gas pressures, and locations and installation angles of the nozzle, the characteristics of the impingement of the jet from a supersonic rectangular nozzle were compared to those previously observed for typical circular nozzles. Schlieren flow visualizations and Pitot pressure measurements downstream of the kerf surface were utilized for this purpose. The present rectangular supersonic nozzle decreased the strength of the Mach disc occurring at the corner of the kerf surface, and thus, could weaken the separation of the assist gas on the kerf surface and increase the Pitot pressures downstream compared to conventional circular nozzles.
