  • Recently, the generalized Hoek-Brown (GHB) failure criterion has been actively employed in various rock engineering calculations, but the analytical form of the corresponding Mohr failure envelope is not available, making it difficult to extend the application of the GHB criterion. In order to overcome this disadvantage, this study proposes a new method to express the tangential friction angle as an explicit function of normal stress by invoking the polynomial best-fitting to the relationship between normal stress and tangent friction angle implied in the GHB failure function. If this normal stress - tangential friction angle relationship is best-fitted with linear or quadratic polynomial function, it is possible to find the analytical root for tangential friction angle. Subsequently, incorporating the root into the relationship between shear stress and tangential friction angle accomplishes the derivation of the approximate Mohr envelope for the GHB criterion. It is demonstrated that the derived approximate Mohr failure envelopes are very accurate in the entire range of GSI value.

  • Drag reduction produced by the dilute solution of polymer under turbulent flow in a rotating disk apparatus(RDA) was investigated in this study for the purpose of potential application to the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion(OTEC) system. Four different molecular weights of poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO) were used as drag reducing additives, and synthetic seawater was adopted as a solvent. Experiments were undertaken to observe the dependence of drag reduction on various factors such as polymer molecular weight, polymer concentration and the rotating speed of the disk. The concentration dependence on the drag reduction of this polymer system was shown to obey an empirical drag reduction equation of the Virk's universal correlation.

  • In this study the behavior of pile groups is investigated experimentally. Special attention is given to the load transfer characteristics of pile groups and to the evaluation of the group effects under vertical and horizontal loadings. In the laboratory experiments, vertical and lateral loadings were imposed on model piles in sand. Model piles made of PVC embedded in Joomoonjin sand were used in this study. Pile arrangements($2\times2,\; 3\times3$) and pile spacings(2.5D, 5.OD, 7.5D) were considered. Load-transfer curves(t-z, q-z and p-y curves), load-deflection curves and group interaction factors were obtained from the experimental results. The group interaction factors under both vertical and horizontal loadings were proposed for the cases of $2\times2\; and\; 3\times3$ pile groups with varying ratios of pile spacings. p-multipliers in this study were found for the individual piles in $2\times2\; and\; 3\times3$ pile groups.

  • In this paper, numerical pile segment analysis is conducted with an advanced soil elastoplastic model to investigate the diameter effects on skin friction behaviour of a drilled shaft in sand. Ultimate skin friction and 't-z' behavior from the pile segment analyses for drilled shafts show good agreement with those from design methods. Higher ultimate skin friction for the smaller diameter pile is related to the greater increase in the effective radial stress at the interface due to the localized dilation at and near the pile interface. Stiffer t-z curve for the smaller diameter pile is related to the early occurrence of three shear stages (early, dilation, constant volume shear stages). The diameter effects on ultimate skin friction of drilled shafts are more prominent for denser sand and lower confining pressure.

  • The analytical results of wear metals such as Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, Ag, Cd, Sn, Ba, Pb in oil samples are compared by portable and bench-top XRF methods as a basic study for the development of portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. The instrumental parameters such as measurement time of portable and bench-top XRF were optimized using certified reference materials of hydrocarbon oil with 20 wear metals in concentration range from 10 to 900 mg/kg. The analytical results of 20 wear metals in certified reference materials and new/used engine oil samples were compared by empirical and fundamental parameter methods.

  • This study investigated the dynamic instability of a ceramic-on-ceramic artificial hip joint system through complex eigenvalue analysis. We examined the mode-coupling mechanism through eigenvalue sensitivity analysis with the variation of system parameters. In addition, we constructed a finite element model including the negative slope of friction curve for investigating the negative-slope mechanism in the hip squeak problem. The numerical results show that the torsion-dominant mode becomes unstable due to the presence of the negative slope while the axial load is the important factor influencing the negative-slope type instability.

  • Structures with additional frictional damping system have strong nonlinearity that the dynamic behavior is highly affected. by the relative magnitude between frictional force and excitation load. In this study, normalized response spectra of the structures with non-dimensional friction force are obtained through nonlinear time history analyses of the mass-normalized single degree of freedom systems using 20 ground motion data recorded on rock site. The variation of the control performance of frictional damping system is investigated in terms of the dynamic load and the structural natural period, of which effects were not considered in the previous studies. Least square curve fitting equations are presented for describing those normalized response spectrum and optimal non-dimensional friction forces are obtained for controlling the peak displacement and absolute acceleration of the structure based on the derivative of the curve fitted design spectrum.

  • The damping of a shock absorption device composed of nonlinear disk spring stacks and rubber rings was investigated. Friction forces of rubber rings and hysteresis of disk springs were obtained experimentally. The hysteresis curves of several types of disk spring stacks were approximated, from which the energy dissipated was estimated. Based upon the friction force and the energy dissipated, 4 damping models were presented and shock responses of the damping models were investigated. The hysteresis of disk spring is more meaningful than the friction of the rubber ring for the damping. For practical use, equivalent viscous damping model for total energy dissipated per cycle was suggested.

  • This work is concerned with the development of an analytical model to predict the friction in longitudinally finned rod bundles. Such bundles are currently considered in KMRR design. The present model assumes the validity of the Law of the Wall over entire flow area. The flow channel area is divided into the interfin region and a number of element channels, and the algebraic form of the Law of the Wall is integrated over each element channel and interfin region to yield an analytic expression for the pressure drop. The model reasonably predicts the 6 fin KMRR data, and overpredicts the 8 fin data about 15 percent.
