  • Wet compression means the injection of water droplets into the compressor of gas turbines. This method decreases the compression work and increases the turbine output by decreasing the compressor exit temperature through the evaporation of water droplets inside the compressor. This paper provides thermodynamic and aerodynamic analysis on wet compression in a centrifugal compressor for a microturbine. The meanline performance analysis of centrifugal compressor is coupled with the thermodynamic equation of wet compression to get the meanline performance of wet compression. The most influencing parameter in the analysis is the evaporative rate of water droplets. It is found that the impeller exit flow temperature and compression work decreases as the evaporative rate increases. And the exit flow angle decreases as the evaporative rate increases.

  • Optimal design of serial connected PZT driven micro compressor was investigated. Modeling equations were derived using energy equation and mass conservation equation. The results show that mass flow rate was increased as number of connected micro compresses is increased. As pressure difference between suction port and discharge port in compressor group is increased, connected compressors have much more mass flow rate than single compressor. Mass flow rate is also increased as driving frequency is increased. And optimal design scale is suggested for highest efficiency or highest mass flow rate.

  • It is essential to understand the characteristics of gas turbine components in order to carry out an off-design analysis of a gas turbine engine. In this study, a micro gas turbine engine test system was constructed to understand the performance characteristics of gas turbines. The temperature and pressure in the flow path of the micro gas turbine was collected by measuring the engine spool speed, and a compressor map was constructed by using the experimental data. The exhaust gas was collected at the turbine outlet and the combustion efficiency was calculated. An off-design performance analysis at ground static was performed using GasTurb software by applying the compressor map and combustion efficiency obtained from the experimental data. Futhermore, we compared and evaluated the analysis results with engine operating data.

  • This study analyzed the variations in the performance and operation of a 200 kW class micro gas turbine according to performance degradation of compressor and turbine. An in-house code, developed by the present authors and presented in the first part of these series of papers, were used for the analysis. The degradation of compressor and turbine were simulated by modifications in the their performance maps: mass flow rate, pressure ratio and efficiency were decreased from the reference values. Firstly, the variations in the operating conditions (air flow rate, pressure ratio) were predicted for the full load condition. Then, the same analysis were performed for a wide partial load operating range. The change in engine's performance (power output and efficiency) due to the component degradation was predicted. In addition, the change in the compressor surge margin, which is an important indicator for safe engine operation, was evaluated.

  • Tip clearance of centrifugal compressor affects the performance. Larger tip clearance results in lower efficiency. What really affects the performance is the running tip clearance, not the cold tip clearance. When the compressor is operating, blade strain and the pressure difference between impeller backplate and hub affects the running tip clearance. This paper describes measured running tip clearance and its effects on the performance of centrifugal compressor. Cold tip clearance before operation was 0.4 mm and running tip clearance varied from 0.86 mm to 0.25 mm with impeller exit pressure. As the pressure at impeller exit increases, the routing tip clearance tends to decreases. The target running tip clearance for compressor at $100\%$ speed was 0.3 mm and it turned out to be exactly 0.30 mm from experiment.

  • This paper proposes a remote supervisory controlling system of air compressor that is controlled by 80196KC microprocessor. In proposed monitoring system, air compressor located in long distance can be controlled In any condition by RS-232 serial communication. Change of data and abnormal signal of it can be also obtained. The validity of the proposed monitoring system is verified through digital simulations and experiments for air compressor driven by induction motor.

  • The energy consumed by compressor in gas turbine is equivalent to $30\sim50\%$ of energy produced by turbine and, therefore, research on reducing compression work is important in increasing the efficiency of gas turbine. One of the method to reduce the compression work is to inject small water droplets into the compressor. This method decreases the compression work by decreasing the compressor exit temperature through the evaporation of water. Researches on wet compression, up to now, are focused on thermodynamic analysis of wet compression where the decrease of exit flow temperature and compression work is demonstrated. This paper presents an thermodynamic and aerodynamic analysis of wet compression in centrifugal compressor for microturbine.

  • The easiest way to see the phenomena of compressor surge is to show the static and dynamic operation characteristic on the map. Its operation zone will be restricted by the surge limit and, static and transient process must have some margin for it. Effect of rotor moment of inertia, air/gas volumes and heat transfer are factors to cause the transition from the static line. In case a large volume such as heat exchanger exists in the system it will exert a substantial influence to dynamic characteristics. In the present paper, influence of air volume bled from the compressor exit on transient process is investigated with an example of an auxiliary power unit micro-turbine engine. Turbine mass, pressure ratio, rotation speed, power and moment are calculated based on mass and work conservation. Result from the present study can give guidance to design the control system. A computer program is developed to calculate the dynamic process using the MathCAD commercial software.
