Mask Cognition Types of Korean in the COVID19 Era using the Q Methodology

  • This study attempted to investigate what kind of perception people in their 20s have about masks and to find out the characteristics of each type by categorizing the perception. The Q methodology was used for the study. The cognition types of masks were categorized into three. Type 1 was a 'always wear impact-important type' that always wears masks and thinks masks affect non-verbal communication and the wearer's image. Type 2 was a 'function-important negative recognition type' that wears masks to prevent germs and thinks that masks have a great negative impact. Type 3 was a 'concealment wear positive image type' that wears a mask to cover the face and thinks that a person looks young when wearing a mask. It is thought that the development of masks of various designs and functions reflecting the needs of consumers should be carried out. Also, it is thought that various products should be developed and sold so that consumers can choose according to important considerations such as design, fit, and function.

Development and Image Sensibility Evaluation of Jacquard Fabric Fashion Masks with Traditional Patterns (전통 문양을 활용한 자카드 직물 패션 마스크 디자인 개발과 이미지 감성 평가)

  • This study aims to develop jacquard fashion masks using traditional patterns and investigates the preference and emotions of consumers for them. Nine patterns were designed with the motifs of plum flower, turtle, and geometric patterns using an Adobe Illustrator program. After that, 20 kinds of jacquard fabrics were developed using those patterns, and prototype masks were made. Furthermore, data were collected using a survey of 231 adult consumers to understand the emotional images evoked by jacquard fashion masks with traditional patterns. The results of the research show that the emotional dimension derived from jacquard fashion masks with traditional patterns consists of seven factors: luxurious image, frugal image, feminine image, oriental image, sporty image, geometrical image, generous image. We found that consumers preferred the M6 with the plum flower pattern as the motif as the most preferred design, while M13 with the geometric pattern as the motif was the lowest preferred.

Structural analysis and design proposal of fine dust mask with nanofiber filter fabricated using electrospinning (전기방사 나노섬유 필터를 활용한 미세먼지 마스크의 구조 분석 및 디자인 제안)

  • The microstructures of nonwoven fabric with and without nanofibers used as a filter for air purification type mask were investigated using scanning electron microscope. Moreover, we proposed a new mask design which is effective in the improvement of the fine dust blocking property. When comparing to nonwoven fabrics of which an average diameter was $25{\mu}m$, the nanofibers formed by the electrospinning process had a tight mesh structure arranged irregularly with a relatively large specific surface area, which could be associated with their much smaller diameter ranging from 25 to 120 nm. Such a prominent structural feature at nanofibers led to mechanical adsorption of fine particles, resulting in enhancement of filtering behavior maintaining high permeability. In addition to the excellent performance of the mask filter, wearing the mask properly is expected to maximize the blocking property of fine dust. To meet such a requirement, a new mask design that can be closely attached to the face in order to effectively block fine dust entering the gap between the face and the mask.

  • This research investigated the needs analysis on consumers of fine dust masks to effectively develop a design prototype. Data were collected through focus group interviews on 32 individuals who have used fine dust masks. As a result, there is a new demand by consumers for technology based design changes that better fit the nose and face. Consumers preferred the smell and feel of traditional Korean paper. Young adults expressed the importance of masks that can be used for protection as well as fashion. The prototype improved the drawbacks of existing models using an origami-inspired design in a variety of colors, patterns and in sizes that are customized to fit the wearer. The proposed prototype is made of Dak felt fibers and jersey materials. It is characterized by downward-facing ear bands made of polyurethane to improve the fit around the ears and chin to more effectively block incoming air. The mask is foldable and has a crease that goes along the chin to increase the amount of enclosed space against the face making it easier to breathe compared to existing mask designs.

Analysis of trends and meanings of fashion masks under the pandemic influence (팬데믹 영향 하의 패션 마스크 디자인 경향 및 의미 분석)

  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, the obligatory wearing of masks has led to increased consumer demand and the diversification of mask design. Accordingly, it is necessary to understand the inner meaning and characteristics of masks in the pandemic situation. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to analyze the characteristics of fashionable masks and their new cultural meaning under the COVID-19 pandemic. This research is based on literature review and empirical research. Drawing on an investigation of the historical evolution of masks and their transition under the pandemic (exhibiting differences in mask culture among countries and regions), this study analyzed 54 distinctive fashion masks designed by fashion brands and influencers that appeared from January 2020 to January 2021. The characteristics of fashion masks identified under the influence of the pandemic are as follows: Message delivery on political issues and human rights; psychological defense and expression of individuality; and conspicuous display via luxurious materials and luxury brand logos; moreover, the design of the mask uses the same material, color, pattern, decoration, and other methods as clothing to achieve the overall style. Over the course of the pandemic (and even in post-pandemic lifestyle), fashion masks are becoming more diversified conveying new social and cultural meanings.

Art Mask Converged Design Based on an Expression Method of Cubism (입체주의 표현기법을 활용한 아트 마스크 융합 디자인)

  • Contemporary art make-up is being widely developed in line with the trends of individualization and differentiation departing from basic desires or logical thinking about the desires of human beings who ultimately pursue beauty and experiencing diversified convergence and integration befitting customer needs. Cubism that has been playing a central role at the center of art history in the $20^{th}$ century can act as a good material based on creativity with regard to expression of the art make-up. In this regard, the study was focused on creating new concepts of design and novel areas of expression by combining expressive methods of cubism with art make-up to suggest an art mask. As for a method of the study, cubism and art make-up were examined based on preceding studies, Internet data and technical books, and the expression method of cubism was divided into plural points of view, partition of shape and collage and motivated the works of Picasso for the purpose of art mask-converged design. As a result of the study, it was found out that the expression method of cubism was applicable to the art make-up, and creative art make-up converged design could be generated to make a suggestion. In this regard, it is hoped that further studies will be facilitated and that this study can be instrumental in developing art make-up design.
