  • An attempt is made to predict the wear behavior of ion-nitrided metal, when wear arises from asperity interactions. The analysis demonstrates that wear mechanisms are not inconsistent with observed behavior, indicates and approaches to a better appreciation of the effects of such factors as nitrided layer formation and surface topographical features. It was found on ion-nitriding that penetration rate and case development are faster and wear properties of the final product are more improved than conventional gas and salt-bath methods of nitriding.

  • A fretting wear test rig for dry ambient condition, which employs a piezoelectric actuator, has been developed. It is driven and loaded in a very simple manner with acceptable experimental accuracy. By using the rig, Inconel 690 tube has been tested under the normal load of 10 and 15N with sliding amplitude of less than $100{\mu}m$ during $10^6$cycles. The wear resistance of the material has been characterized in terms of the wear coefficient based on the work rate model. SEM micrographs show the complex structures of the scars, which consist of risen peaks, plate-type thin layers and locally exposed bare surfaces. The cracks spread over the layers give clue to the fretting wear mechanism of the material.

  • Oxidation characteristics of Zirlo and Zircaloy-4 tubes, which are widely used as nuclear power fuel cladding, are studied in steam environment up to $1200^{\circ}C$. Oxidation resistances are compared in terms of the mass increase due to the absorption of oxygen. The evolution of microscopic structure accompanied with the oxidation process is investigated. Also, the influence of oxidation on the fretting wear characteristics of the tubes is studied. Piezo-electrically actuated rig is employed to fret the tubes with cross-contacting arrangement. Wear scar is observed and measured, by using microscopes and a 3D-profiler. The results of fretting wear are quantified in terms of scar size, wear volume and wear coefficient, and compared for the three different tube materials of oxidated Zirlo, virgin Zirlo and Zircaloy-4.

  • In the previously reported Part I, the behavior of the flank wear for carbide tool was studied as a preceeding step to present a simple method for Quick Tool-Life Testing, and the following general equation was obtained $W_{f}$ =(a+bt) $V^{m}$ . In this study the following step-cutting formula for the constants a, b and m in the above general model is derived by using step-cutting data [a numerical formula] To check the validity of the above formula, the comparison is made between the tool-life equation inferred in this method and that inferred in the conventional tool-life testing method, when the wear criterion is 0.3mm. The equation obtained in the present method is V(T')$^{0.57}$=1763 whereas the equation obtained in the conventional tool-life testing method is V(T)$^{0.56}$=1605 The results of the above two formula are satisfactory and also verify the validity of the present research.earch.

  • The characteristics of corrosion resistance for the surface of ductile cast iron(GCD40) by plasma nitriding process have been studied in terms of electrochemical polarization behaviors including corrosion potential($E_{corr}$), anodic polarization trends, polarization resistance($R_p$), and also have been studied microstructures, hardness and specific wear of nitrided layer Nitrided layer showed an enhanced hardness values in all the plasma nitriding condition investigated. In the result of wear test, specific wear of nitrided specimens were much decreased than that of non-treated specimens. In the results of XRD, ${\gamma}'phase\;and\;{\varepsilon}$ phase were detected in nitrided surface. And it was found that ${\varepsilon}$ phase was decreased and ${\gamma}'phase$ was increased respectively, as the nitriding time became longer. In the test of corrosion resistance, natural potentials in all the nitrided specimens were towards noble directions than in the case of non-treated specimens. The measurement of electrode potentials revealed that corrosion resistivity of plasma nitrided specimens were higher than in the case of the non-treated specimens.
