  • The damping of a shock absorption device composed of nonlinear disk spring stacks and rubber rings was investigated. Friction forces of rubber rings and hysteresis of disk springs were obtained experimentally. The hysteresis curves of several types of disk spring stacks were approximated, from which the energy dissipated was estimated. Based upon the friction force and the energy dissipated, 4 damping models were presented and shock responses of the damping models were investigated. The hysteresis of disk spring is more meaningful than the friction of the rubber ring for the damping. For practical use, equivalent viscous damping model for total energy dissipated per cycle was suggested.

  • Stable haptic interaction with virtual environments is essential not only for the safety of the user but also for improving the immersion of the user. If the coefficient of a virtual spring is increased, the system becomes unstable. Therefore, the coefficient of the virtual spring is limited. The haptic system with the high-frequency zero-order-hold (HF-ZOH) is proposed to enhance the stability margin of a virtual spring. In this paper, the relationship among the sampling period of HF-ZOH, the coefficient of the physical damper, and the maximum stable margin of the virtual spring is analyzed. The lager the coefficient of the physical damper is, the shorter the sampling period of the HF-ZOH is, the larger the stable region of the virtual spring becomes. If the ratio N is larger than 40, the stable region of the proposed method is about three times to eight times that of the previous method, according to the coefficient of the physical damper. Hence the method enables to improve the user's realism in virtual environments.

  • A general method is proposed for stiffness analysis of the leaf springs only using the geometric data and Young's modulus of the leaf springs. In this method, an engineering beam theory and Castigliano's theory are applied for the derivation of the stiffness of the leaf springs. To show realiability and effectiveness of this method, the stiffness from the proposed method is compared with the results for various types of leaf springs. From these comparisons the proposed method has been proved to be effective and reliable to estimate the stiffness of the leaf springs.

  • This study examines the response when the shock by underwater explosion is transmitted to a vertical launch air-vehicle mounted on a ship using modeling and simulation, and is about a plan to increase method shock resistance to protect the air vehicle. In order to obtain an accurate mathematical model, a dynamic characteristic test was performed on similar equipment, and through this, the mathematical model could be supplemented. And, using the supplemented mathematical model, the air vehicle simulated the shock response by the underwater explosion specified in the BV043 standard. As a result of the first simulation, it was confirmed that air vehicle could not withstand shock, and air vehicle protection method using a ring spring type shock absorber was studied. In addition to the basic shape of abosber, it was confirmed that the ring spring absober can be used to increase the impact resistance of a shipborn vertical launch vehicle by performing simulations for each case by changing deseign varables.

  • A virtual rigid is modeled as the parallel structure of a virtual spring and a virtual damper. The reflective force from the virtual model is designed to be as large as possible to improve the realism of the virtual environment while maintaining the stable interaction. So, it is important to analyze the stability boundary of the virtual spring and damper. In the previous researches, the stability boundary is analyzed based on the zero-order-hold (ZOH) method, but it is analyzed based on the first-order-hold (FOH) method and the virtual damper in the paper. The boundary value of the stable virtual damper is inverse proportional to the sampling time and the maximum value of stable virtual stiffness is inverse proportional to the square of the sampling time. And the maximum value in the FOH method is increased to 110% of the value in the ZOH method. If the virtual damper is smaller than about 50% of the boundary value of the virtual damper in the FOH method, the stable virtual stiffness in the FOH method is several times larger than that in the ZOH method.

  • Air springs are now widely used in bus or truck suspensions due to their advantages over conventional metal spring as coil or leaf springs. Air springs have soft spring rates, which give better ride quality, and additional leveling system provides constant ride height and maintains almost same vertical natural frequencies. A mathematical model of an air spring suspension system with height control system is constructed and dynamic responses of the suspension system are investigated in the light of leveling valve motion characteristic, vertical motion natural frequency. Also, using a full vehicle model, handling characteristics of an air spring suspension is studied and the results are compared with real test results, which shows good agreements.

  • Payload fairing(PLF) protects satellites and related equipment from the external environment. They are separated before the satellite separation. Payload fairing made of composite sandwich materials due to their considerable bending stiffness and strength-to-weight ratio. Payload fairing have compression, shear and bending load during the flight. In this study, To check the strength of PLF and connected part, structural test of PLF accomplished using an actuator and a fixture. Purpose of structural test is to verify the strength of PLF in force of separation spring and combination structural load applied. Test result shows that the PLF have an acceptable margin of safety for the combination structural load and force of separation spring.
