Representation of Realism in Documentaries with the Case Analysis on the Application of the Off-Screen Space (다큐멘터리에서의 외화면 활용을 통한 리얼리즘의 구현)

  • Since 1960, there has been growing recognition that the moving images reveal the 'realistic illusion(L'illusion r$\acute{e}$aliste)' rather than the reality itself and many theorists and film directors have tried to suggest the methodology to solve the problem of verisimilitude of the moving images. In this paper, we describe through the case analysis of the practical use of 'off-screen space' as a methodology which actualize the reality in documentaries, by minimizing the 'suture' effect which occurs the problem of verisimilitude, based on the theories of Bazin and Burch. We, consequently, believe that the application of the 'off-screen space' could be one of the appropriate possibility for the successful representation of reality in documentaries.

Cold War Liberalism in Postwar Japan: An Interpretation of Maruyama Masao's Realistic Liberalism (냉전과 일본의 자유주의- 마루야마 마사오의 냉전자유주의와 리얼리즘)

  • This paper explains what Japanese progressive liberalism was in postwar Japan by clarifying Maruyama Masao's "Cold War Liberalism," focusing especially on his realism and nationalism searching for "democracy" and "peace" in the context of the early Cold War Japan. Maruyama's Cold War liberalism can be grasped from two perspectives: how the Cold War defined his liberalism and how Maruyama interpreted the Cold War as a liberalist in postwar Japan. The liberal interpretation of the Cold War captures the spatial manifestations of liberalism in the Cold War while Cold War liberalism was to grasp the temporal succession of modern Japan. Maruyama revealed his liberal thinking by combining it to his idea of nationalism and realism. He was concerned about the reshaping of the fascist atmosphere provoked by anti-communism emerging from 186 | 동북아역사논총 59호the Cold War confrontation structure. He sought "neutrality" and "peace" to overcome the so-called "two worlds" of the Cold War. And he stressed the importance of "fair judgment" and "autonomous association" to restrain the fascistic atmosphere in postwar Japan. For Maruyama, subjectivity aimed at the concept of "nation" rather than "citizen," and nationalism was a condition for "democracy" and "peace" in postwar Japan. Maruyama's critical liberalism worked through nationalism and realism.

Structuralization of CGI Visual Format for Digital Cinema and Digital Animation -Focused on Film - (디지털시네마와 디지털애니메이션을 위한 CGI 시각형식 구조화 -영화<정글북>을 중심으로-)

  • CGI not only performed a crucial role to make cinema and animation evolved into digital cinema and digital animation but also CGI, an important visual format, settled realism-centric spectacle image culture in public commercial cinema and animation. The fact that CGI visual format could be structuralized in three different view points is discovered through Iconicity, photorealism, verisimilitude, uncanny valley, hyperrealism, and spectacular realism discourse research which explain image culture. First, a formative viewpoint that comes up in an iconic difference between drawing and photograph. Secondly, a cognitive viewpoint that sees visually perceived naturalness and abnormality as a realistic probability issue. Lastly, a customary viewpoint which is rooted in aesthetic tradition of cinema and animation. After that, the features of CGI which is used in the movie 'jungle book'(2016) were analyzed using the structured visual format. Consequently, this movie has hyper-realistic photographic iconicity on the base of realistic probability. Also, by following image-aesthetic convention which uses overstated and amplified narrative as a visual format, at the same time, the movie also has sufficient image-aesthetic convention in animation by personified animal character.

Effect of Abstraction and Realism on Uncanny Valley in 3D Character Model (3D 캐릭터 모델의 추상화와 리얼리즘이 언캐니 밸리 현상에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to quantitatively and empirically investigate whether cartoon-realism, which is referred to as a guideline for avoiding the uncanny valley phenomenon, is actually effective. An experiment was carried out to investigate whether or not methods that try to realistically express the texture of human skin while making 3D models whose outward appearance abstract like a cartoon actually reduce the negative sentiments associated with the uncanny valley phenomenon. The results found that when human skin textures were applied to cartoon-type 3D models, the degree of eeriness significantly increased (p<0.05), while there was no change in the degree of human likeness. When cartoon-style skin textures were applied to human-type 3D models, there was no significant difference in the degree of eeriness, but the degree of human likeness significantly decreased (p<0.05). These results show that, cartoon realism is not actually effective, and rather creates a perceptual conflict and induces the uncanny valley phenomenon. The results of this study are expected to be used as quantitative and empirical data for developing design guidelines that will overcome the uncanny valley phenomenon in the future.
