  • Outdoor cuttings studies on two coniferous species, pitch pine and needle fir, have been made at Suwon, Korea extending from March to early May, 1956. The purpose of these studies was to find the effects of ages of parent trees, topophysis, dilute hormone solution treatments and the time at which the cuttings were collected on the rooting response of the cuttings. On September 2, rooting results were examined. Pitch Pine (Pinus rigida) The total of 1335 cuttings were collected from 3- and 10-year old trees. The cuttings treated were planted on March 13 and April 20. 1. In the cuttings collected from 3-year-old seedlings, the best result (34 percent rooted) was obtained by treating ends of cuttings with a mixture of 50 ppm IBA and 50 ppm NAA. 2. No rooting was observed in lammas shoots. 3. The cuttings from 3-year-old seedlings gave better rooting than those from 10-year-old trees. 4. The root origins were developed from the lower part of the cutting and the cut surface. Needle fir (Abies holophylla) One hundred twenty-five cuttings were collected from a 30-year-old tree. The cuttings treated with any one of four mixed hormone solutions were planted on March 23. 1. Fifteen cuttings out of 75 cuttings from the lower half of the crown were rooted. The cuttings obtained from the upper half of the crown did not root at all. 2. The cuttings treated by the hormone solution made up of 20 ppm IAA, 20 ppm IBA, 20 ppm NAA, 20 ppm thiamine and 5 percent sucrose gave the best rooting (22 percent). 3. All roots originated from callus tissues and irregularly arranged parenchymatous tissues near the cut base.

  • The concentrations of some ions ($NO{_3}^-$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $NH{_4}^+$) in soil solution collected by zero tension lysimeter in mature Pinus rigida plantations in Goksung, Jeonranam-do were measured at two soil depths (10cm and 30cm) following various levels of cutting intensity treatment (uncut, $6m{\times}50m$, $10m{\times}50m$, $20m{\times}50m$ strip crearcutting) three times (July 6. July 30, and August 4) between June 20 and August 4 1998. The ion concentrations in the soil solution were significantly different among sampling times, while the concentrations were not different among cutting levels or sampling depths. The ion concentrations in the soil solution decreased in the order of $NO{_3}^-$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $NH{_4}^+$ and the mean concentration was 3.60mg/L for $NO{_3}^-$, 1.7mg/L for $Ca^{2+}$, 0.5mg/L for $Mg^{2+}$, and 0.04mg/L for $NH{_4}^+$ respectively. These ion concentrations except for $NH{_4}^+$ ion were negatively correlated with the volume of collected soil solutions (r=-0.31~-0.41). The results suggest that the change of nutrient concentrations in the soil solution collected from the P. rigida plantations was related to the temporal input patterns of precipitation rather than the cutting intensity.

  • This study was conducted to understand the long-term changes in soil physiochemical properties and seedling growth in Larix kaempferi (larch) stands planted in clear-cut larch and Pinus rigida (pine) forest soils over an 11-year period after reforestation. Two-year-old bare-root larch seedlings were planted in 2009-2010 at a density of 3,000 seedlings ha-1 in clear-cut areas that harvested larch (Chuncheon and Gimcheon) and pine (Wonju and Gapyeong) stands. We analyzed the physiochemical properties of the mineral soils sampled at 0-20 cm soil depths in the planting year, and the 3rd, 7thand 11th years after planting, and we measured seedling height and root collar diameter in those years. We found significant differences in soil silt and clay content, total carbon and nitrogen concentration, available phosphorus, and cation exchangeable capacity between the two stands; however, seedling growth did not differ. The mineral soil was more fertile in Gimcheon than in the other plantations, while early seedling growth was greatest in Gapyeong. The seedling height and diameter at 11 years after planting were largest in Wonju (1,028 tree ha-1) and Chuncheon (1,359 tree ha-1) due to decreases in stand density after tending the young trees. The soil properties in all plantations were similar 11 years after larch planting. In particular, the high sand content and high available phosphorus levels (caused by soil disturbance during clear-cutting and planting) showed marked decreases, potentially due to soil organic matter input and nutrient uptake, respectively. Thus, early reforestation after clear-cutting could limit nutrient leaching and contribute to soil stabilization. These results provide useful information for nutrient management of larch plantations.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the vegetation community structure and the distribution characteristics of Buxus koreana through analysis of the topography and soil characteristics in Kwanaksan Ecological and Scenery Conservation Area. To do this twenty two plots as $100m^2$ each were set up and investigated. As a result, the vegetation communities were classified in four groups; Pinus rigida community (I), P. rigida - B. koreana community(II), Quercus mongolica community(III), Quercus acutissima - Quercus serrata community(IV). The distribution characteristics in topography appeared that B. koreana distributed more in valley where soil water and nutrition conditions are good. The drainage condition also influenced the distribution, because the ratio of clay was low in the result of soil texture analysis. B. koreana was distributed in high-pitched slope and the high rock ratio area. According to the soil analysis, the mean soil pH of B. koreana distributed groups(pH 4.79) was higher than that of non-B. koreana distributed groups(pH 4.41). It appeared that B. koreana had tolerance to the barren soil, so the value of exchangeable cations such as $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$were showed lower than that of the average of Korean forest soil.

  • The objects of this study are to induce the experimental equation suitable to estimate the height growing process, and to get some information that could be to reduce the error percent on determining the site index. The height growing process per sample plot were made up from the height age curve getted through the stem-analysis of the dominant tree. The 11 equations were calculated in the functional formulas between the age and the dominant height of Alnus hirsuta, Larix leptolepsis, L. Gmelini, P. koraiensis, Abies holophylla, P. rigida, Q. acutissima and Q. aliena. The suitable equation for estimating the guide curve were selected with the highest correlation and the low standard error with comparision on the age-height distributed map as Fig. 2. The suitable equation is different between the species as their calculated results as follows; The growing process of tree height are occasionally found to be polymorphous in the growth pattern as Fig. 3. By this result, the site index are practically found to be always not constant but shows variation to age in same plot as example 5. So, that the site index are estimated from the height-growth curve to age drawing by the stem-analysis or the polymorphic-curve, are concluded to be suitable on the study of site evaluation.

  • A microwave vacuum (MW/V) dryer was developed for drying short roundwoods, from which woodcraft souvenirs in Korean market are mostly made, and which were hardly dried without defects in a conventional kiln. It consisted of three 1.5 kW magnetrons of 2,450 MHz, a vacuum pump, a load cell of 100 kg and a cavity of $580{\times}580{\times}1,360\;mm^3$. A computer program was developed to switch on or off the magnetrons according to drying schedules, those were based on microwave injection time or the average of wood temperatures. To evaluate the new MW/V dryer the roundwood specimens of rigida pine, poplar and birch were dried. Their log diameters and lengths ranged from 125 to 25 em and from 25 to 50 cm, respectively. In spite of the presence of minor drying defects, the MW/V drying is found to be an effective method for drying short roundwoods. Wooden turneries made of red alder and ash logs were also MW/V dried from green to 4%MC without any degradation. The rates of the MW/V drying were examined for three different lengths of poplar logs.

  • Distribution and standing crops of seedling and sapling as undergrowing tree were investigated in a Pinus rigida forest. The relative light intensity(RLI) on the ground level was 3.9∼59.3% which indicates a wide range. Under this range of RLI seedlings and saplings distribute well in the stand. Eight trees were selected from the stand, then measured dry weight of stem, branches and leaves using thestratified clip technique. A possible relationship between the diameter at the bottom of the tree (Do) and standing crops was investigated. As Do increased from 0.8cm (T1) to 7.2cm (T8), the standing crops also increased from 42.6g to 7,410.4g. Since semi-log values between Do and standing crops clearly indicates a straight line, there is close relationship between these two factors. Therefore it is possible to estimate the standing crops of seedling and sapling by measuring Do. Productive structure shows that phytosynthetic layer is located above the 1/2 height of the tree and maximum photosynthetic layer apperars on 2/3 level in height.

  • To determine patterns of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) change in foliage and twig we collected branch samples of 40-year-old Pinus rigida and Larix leptolepis plantations every month during the growing season of 1996 in Yangpyeong, Kyonggi-Do. Significant seasonal differences on N and P concentrations in foliage and twig were observed for both study species because of nutrient retranslocation. P. rigida and L. leptolepis retranslocated 40 and 37% of foliar N and 86 and 16% of foliar P, respectively. Twig N and P retranslocation rates of P. rigida and L. leptolepis were 114 and 25%, and 42 and 70%, respectively. There were no significant differences in foliar N retranslocation rates between P. rigida and L. leptolepis while P retranslocation rate in foliage of P. rigida was higher than that of L. leptolepis. Our results suggested that twigs were the main sinks for retranslocated nutrients from foliages of the both study species.
