  • Scenario is a guiding principle of launch operation and control for rocket and ground support system. Therefore, developing a scenario is the first step to prepare for rocket launch, which is a critical task for success of KSR-III flight test. The launch scenario for KSR-III flight test is a procedural sequence of command and control signals to be given to rocket and ground support systems. In this paper, the UML object modeling method is applied to development of a launch scenario. First, the subsystems of the launch system are modeled by objects, and then the interfaces between each two subsystems are modeled by association links. The finally obtained object diagram of KSR-III launch system is used to analyzing flow of data and commands and control signals, and interactions. The scenario includes the sequences of pre-launch/launch operations and emergency operations.

  • This study investigates the far-field noise from three Falcon 9 vehicle launches from Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA, USA, as measured from the same location within the nearby community of Lompoc. The overall sound pressure levels for the three launches are shown to be similar, but some differences in the early launch period are thought to be weather-related. The peak directivity angle in overall level is approximately 65 deg, which is consistent with horizontally-fired, static rocket data. For the third launch, waveforms and spectra are analyzed for different events during the launch sequence. The measured spectral bandwidth decreases with time, but spectral levels remain above the ambient noise throughout the main-engine firing. Additionally, late-launch phenomena observed in the data appear to be correlated with main-engine cutoff and second-stage engine start.

  • Water rocket is a non-chemical rocket mechanically powered by pressurized gas and liquid (water) propellants. Since water rockets share many engineering commonalities with liquid propellant rockets for space launch vehicles, it is as a education tool for rocket engineering. Present paper investigated the availability of water rocket as an engineering education model by surveying the history of water rocket and making examples from K-12 education, commercial products and club activities. Finally, a way of improvement is suggested for water rocket competitions make changes in the perception on water rockets by examining the limitations of present competitions.

  • An experimental and numerical study of aerodynamic charateristics of KSR-III and jet impingement on a deflector during launch has been conducted. To investigate aerodynamic characteristics of KSR-III configuration, wind tunnel tests using 6.4% scale model were performed by 4x4 feet ADD trisonic wind tunnel on the Mach number range of 0.4~3.8. Solutions of Three dimensional Euler equations were also obtained and compared with test result. For the study of KSR-III jet impingement flowfield on a deflector during launch operation, unsteady computation using CFD-FASTRAN was performed.

  • This paper is about a short survey on the recent research activities regarding health monitoring and management for liquid rocket engines. For this, we investigate the precedent techniques developed in advanced space-industry countries which are USA, EU, Russia, Japan and China. Particularly, we focus on the technologies applied in China, a recently joined to the advanced space-industry countries in this field. Then we discuss some important points to be considered to apply to the development of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle KSLV-II and other related projects.

  • It is a known fact that much effort, time and cost are needed to develop a new launch vehicle. Among the many components consisting of the launch vehicle, a rocket engine is a one of the most important and difficult part to develop in which many risks may lie dormant because very active chemical reaction occurs inside the engine while the engine is also required optimum ratio of the mass and performance. This research focused on the risk mitigation to develop the rocket engine using the example of recently developed US rocket engine.

  • This paper introduces ground feeding facility for flight test of sounding rocket(KSR-III) which use liquid propellants and addresses facility configuration, development process and results. Supply of propellants and pressurization gases to vehicle according to predefined launch scenario is the primary goal of ground feeding facility. It was constructed at KSR-III launch site, verified by several tests and used for the flight test successfully.

  • There has been significant increase in demand of launch opportunities from the small satellite sector that represents the new space era. Providing smallsat-dedicated launch service at an affordable price is a new business model many startup companies have pursued, which requires innovative solutions for cost reduction in combination of low cost components, volume production and optimized manufacturing. We set out a preceding study at KARI to develop a suite of critical and cost-cutting technologies in preparation for a two-staged small launch vehicle development, based on the liquid rocket engine technologies developed from the Nuri program in accordance with the 3rd master plan for national space development. In this work, we introduce the concept of a two-staged small launch vehicle that aims to be innovative and cost competitive for small satellites, and describe mission design results including staging as well as overall vehicle configuration of the launch vehicle.
