  • This paper treats with the history and current trends in the developments of liquid-propellant rocket engine in Russia and Ukraine which are among world leaders in the technology of liquid rocket engine(LRE). In 1960s formerly the Soviet Union accepted the closed cycle engine for increasing the pressure in the combustion chamber and specific impulse to the maximum. However, since financially difficult times after 1990, they have decreased the cost for the development of new rocket engines. It was achieved by using existing units for new developed engines and minimizing the total number of engines and tests through the reasonable planning in the process for the experimental improvement of LRE. In addition, nowadays international cooperation in supplying LRE for commercial rocket and development of next generation LRE, such as 3 components engines and mathane engines, are proceeding.

  • Life time and number of use of liquid propellant rocket engine (LRE) should be carefully defined since those are crucial parameters affecting development costs and period. The present study surveyed the development and qualification records of LRE for space launch vehicles, especially concerning about test numbers and duration. It was shown that a single engine for expendable launch vehicle is tested with tens of ignition and several times duration of flight at least.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute has being developed a staged combustion cycle rocket (SCCR) engine with high specific impulse to send a 3-ton class satellite into geostationary orbit while conducted Korean Space Launch Vehicle (KSLV) II project. The SCCR engine is different from the KSLV-II engine, which is open cycle engine using a gas-generator. The SCCR engine with closed cycle is composed of a pre-burner, a turbo pump, and a main combustor. The technology demonstration model (TDM0) was assembled and tested in the 7ton-class engine combustion test facility of Naro Space Center, and the combustion test was successfully conducted. Afterward engine-shaped SCCR engine model (TDM1) is being designed and developed for the next combustion test.

  • The review of the liquid propellant rocket engine is presented. The combustion instabilities which were discovered on solid and liquid propellant rocket engines in 1930, have occurred on propulsion devices, such as gas turbine, ramjet, scramjet and rocket, and thus a study on the combustion instability became necessary. However, this problem has not been solved yet. Therefore, we investigated causes and mechanisms of the combustion instability and surveyed the efforts of solving combustion instability in various countries for developing stable liquid propellant rocket engines.

  • As a result of the study on a number of the works, published in Russia, the methodical aspects of experimental improvement on working capacity of LRE (Liquid Rocket Engine) are reviewed. In the article, on the basis of the experience of Russia and USA, the special features of experimental improvement on working capacity of LRE and the methods of its rational implementation formulated. The organizational and technical solutions of experimental improvement on working capacity of LRE for achieving the required level of the reliability and decreasing the material expenditures are presented in the article. These suggested solutions can be used for the development of LRE.

  • During dynamic flight by propulsion of rocket engine, in the atmosphere, the attitude control of flight vehicle can be accomplished by the aerodynamic fin actuator. But, in the outer space, the method of TVC(Thrust Vector Control) is only depend on for it. There are many systems which were developed for TVC. In our research, among them we adopted gimbal engine actuation system which could control the vector of thrust by swivelling rocket engine connected by gimbal. There are electro-hydraulic, electro-mechanical and pneumatic system which can be used as gimbal engine actuation system, but the electro-hydraulic system that has high ratio of output power to mass is preferred for the high power system. In this note, we made a mathematical model of the electro-hydraulic gimbal engine actuation system for the TVC of KSR-III in detail and on the base of this model we performed a simulation study. And then, we verified the model by making a comparison between the simulation and the experiments on the real system.
