  • In this paper, a phased array antenna based on thin-film dielectric technology at 60 GHz is designed. In order to reduce dividing/combining loss and avoid high loss of phase shifters, Rotman Lens has been employed as a feeder of antenna. The lens has 3 beam ports and 5 array ports with 2 dummy ports. The simulation for the design was performed by simulator using MoM(method of moments). The measured results of fabricated lens show magnitude deviation less than ${\pm}2dB$ and phase aberration less than ${\pm}5^{\circ}$ over $58{\sim}62GHz$. The antenna shows ${\pm}7^{\circ}$ of scan angles.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel interactive 3D floating image pointing device for the use of 3D environment. The proposed system consists of the 3D floating image generation system by use of a floating lens array and the a user interface based on real-time finger detection. In the proposed system, a user selects single image among the floating images so that the interaction function are performed effectively by pressing the button event through the finger recognition using two cameras. To show the usefulness of the proposed system, we carry out the experiment and the preliminary results are presented.

  • The underwater acoustic lens system is one of the systems getting high-resolution images on the seafloor by the beam forming method using acoustic lens. The beam forming using acoustic lenses reduces complexity and driving power. When receiving an incoming beam with the acoustic lens array, beam pattern analysis and arrangement problem of the array sensor must be addressed. Introducing SIR (Signal to Interference Ratio), the relationship among sensor interval, beam pattern and image quality would be analyzed. Generally if the sensor interval getting wider, the less effect of the side lobes makes SIR high. If the amplitude of a side lobe is high, SIR is generally getting low. The type of the apodization function changes the width, shape and amplitude of both main lobe and side lobes. Thus an appropriate apodization function can improve SIR. In this paper, SIR is stable at the sensor interval of 13mm with 0-10dB, which is not high relatively. By applying the Chebyshev function, the SIR becomes 80dB over the sensor interval of 37 mm or higher. The Hann and triangular functions demonstrate better SIR when the sensor interval becomes narrower.

  • Compound eyes in nature present intriguing topics in physiological optics due to their unique optical scheme for imaging. For example, a bee's eye has thousands of integrated photonic units called ommatidia spherically arranged along a curvilinear surface so that each unit points in a different direction. The omni-directionally arranged ommatidium collects incident light with a narrow range of angular acceptance and independently contributes to the capability of wide field-of-view (FOV) detection. Artificial implementation of compound eyes has attracted a great deal of research interest because the wide FOV exhibits a huge potential for medical, industrial, and military applications. So far, imaging with a FOV over $90^{\circ}$ has been achieved only with fisheye lenses which rely on bulky and expensive multiple lenses and require stringent alignment. In this talk, we will discuss about the spherical 3D arrangement of the photonic structures of biologically inspired artificial compound eyes in a small form-factor to have and the functional and anatomical similiarity with natural compound eyes.

  • Micro array lens systems are designed for a faximile or copy machine. The array type is hexagonal. Diameter of a lens is 0.16 mm and the distance of the center of the nearest neighbor is 0.192 mm. The magnitude of the lens system is 1:1. Working distane is 10.55 mm and the spot size is less than 0.04 mm radius on axis and 0.20 mm off-axis in case of single layer system. Working distance is 7.90 mm and the spot size is less than 0.07 mm radius on axis and 0.09 mm radius off axis in case of double layer system. Performance of single layer micro array lens system and double layer micro array lens system are compared with the characteristics of the ray fans.y fans.

  • In this paper, a new integral imaging method with horizontal parallax only is proposed by modified use of elemental images pickuped from conventional integral imaging. The modified elemental images are obtained by magnifying single horizontal elemental image vertically and from which 3D images could be reconstructed. The proposed method can provide us large reduction of transmission information data for elemental images by eliminating the vertical parallax. The feasibility of our approach is experimentally demonstrated and its results are presented.

  • PMMA(poly-methyl methacrylate) microlens array is fabricated using transparent acrylic resin. PMMA is commonly used material for plastic lens due to its excellent visibility larger than 90% and other optical characteristics so much close to those of glass. Orthodontic resin (DENTSPLY International Inc.), commonly used in dentistry, is an transparent acrylic resin kit including MMA liquid and polymerization powder. Their mixture results in PMMA through polymerization. Using the resin PMMA layer is formed on the substrate through spin-coating. Designed pattern of lens structure is transferred to PMMA layer by RIE (Reactive Ion Etching) with oxygen plasma. Final lens shape is formed by thermal treatment that causes PMMA to reflow, The thickness of PMMA spun on the substrate is $17{\mu}m$ that is also final sag of microlens, Designed diameters of the microlenses are $200{\mu}m$, $300{\mu}m$,and $500{\mu}m$, respectively.
