The equivalent lens conversion is extended to lens group conversion, and the more generalized conversion method is developed. The new conversion method can be used for hte direct thick-to-thick lens conversion. By using the equivalent lens conversion, a thin lens system can be converted into various thick lens system which have different axial thicknesses, but those converted lens systems have identical paraxial property and similar aberration characteristic. For an example, the equivalent lens conversion technique is applied to modification of a thelephoto lens design. The axial thicknesses of the front group elements of the system are reduced to 75% of their original values. The modified design by using the equivalent lens conversion has same focal length with original, and it has smaller aberration changes than the other design of which axial thicknesses are changed only.
This study was conducted to measure the central corneal thickness(CTT) changes associated with kinds of wearing contact lens. The CCT was measured using ultrasonic pachymeter in three hundred four subjects in their 20s and 30s. Although the CCT of Group 1 who had never worn any kinds of contact lens had no differences between left and right eye as well as between genders, the CCT tended to become thinner depending on the increment in refractive error. In Group 2 wearing only soft contact lens, the CCT was thinner depending on wearing period, and subjects wearing for more than 10 years had significantly thin CCT comparing with subjects wearing for less than 4 years. There was no significant difference in the CCT between Group 3 wearing only RGP lens and Group 2 for less than 4 years. Furthermore, when comparing the CCT between the Group 2 and Group 4 changing to RGP lens after wearing soft contact lens, there was no statistically significant change in the CCT. However, the CCT was significantly thinner in Group 5 changing to soft contact lens after wearing PMMA(polymethyl methacrylate) hard lens compared with Group 2.
Purpose: Analysis performance for spectacle lens which sales in domestic market and optimization design a spectacle lens which is corrected aberration. Methods: Measured center thickness, radius and aspherical surface coefficient for spherical and aspherical lenses which were ${\pm}$5.00D. Refractive index for every lens was 1.6 and they came from 4 different companies. I used 3 types of equipment to measure lenses. ID-F150 (Mitutoyo) : Center Thickness, FOCOVISION (SR-2, Automation Robotics) : Radius, PGI 1240S (Taylor Hobson) : Aspherical surface coefficient. Designed a lens which had 27 mm of distance from lens rear surface to center of eye, 4 mm of pupil diameter and small aberration on center vision $30^{\circ}C$. To shorten axial distance compared with the measured lens rise merits for cosmetic. Lens Design tool was CODE V (Optical Research Associates). Results: -5.00D aspherical lens had somewhat high astigmatism and distortion compared with the spherical lens. But it had a merit for cosmetic because of short axial height and decrease edge thickness. Improved a performance of distortion and ascertain merits for cosmetic due to short axial height and decrease edge thickness same as (-) lens in case of +5.00 aspherical lens. Though an optimization process front surface aspherical lens had a good performance for astigmatism and distortion and the merit for beauty compared with measured spherical lens. Conclusions: Design trend for domestic aspherical lens is decrease axial height and thickness to increase a merit for cosmetic not but increase performance of aberration. From design theory for optimization design front surface aspherical spectacle lens which has improved performance of aberration and merit for cosmetic at the same time compared with the measured lens. Expect an improved performance from design back aspherical lens compared with front aspherical lens.
Purpose: This review article was written to investigate how the various factors, such as lacrimal thickness, CL's thickness and Dk, affects the influx of $O_2$ diffusion into the cornea. Methods: A mathematical model was proposed to analyze the oxygen diffusion reaching the cornea through the tear layers and contact lens based on Fick's law and the principle of continuity of the diffusion flux through the each layers. Results: The model predicts how the parameters such as the thickness of tear layer on the cornea, both the Dk and thickness of contact lenses etc., affect the oxygen tension at cornea and oxygen flux entering the cornea. Conclusions: It is found that either too flat or too tightly fitted contact lenses can cause the oxygen deficiency at/inside the periphery of the cornea because of the reduction of oxygen flux resulted from too thickened tear layer.

The oxygen permeability of a soft contact lens is an important parameter for determining corneal health when considering the physiological response of the eye. The aim of this study is to evaluate the oxygen permeability of soft contact lenses based on thickness, using the polarographic method. The thickness of lens was measured using contact and non-contact method. To assess accuracy and reliability, the Bland-Altman plot was used. The reliability was high for the oxygen permeability based on center thickness measured by contact method, whereas the accuracy was high for the oxygen permeability based on center thickness measured by non-contact method. These results indicate that the permeability characteristics were variable according to the measurement and criteria of thickness of soft contact lenses and the measurement of soft contact lenses by non-contact method was more reasonable. Thus, contact lens practitioners should consider some basic differences between methodologies when interpreting or quoting oxygen performance data.
Differential equations and its numerical solution program using Turbo-C were formulated to describe the radical distribution and average displacement amplitude of vibrating dehydrated contact lens(HEMA) driven by sinusoidal or rectangular pressure. The natural resonant frequency of the lens diaphram(thickness 0.08mm, diameter 14mm, curvature radius 8mm) was measured to be 5730 Hz from the extrapolation of frequency vs addedmass to the diaphram curve. The Young's modulus of the lens was measured to be $4{\times}10^9$ Pa with altering the original shape. The effect of parameters such as thickness, effective radius, damping coeff., amplitude of driving pressure on the vibration characteristics was illustrated by the computer simulation of the derived program. When the frequency of driving pressure coincides with the integral multiple of fundamental resonance frequency of the lens the wave pattern changes from arc to bell-shape along the radial position of the diaphram. If this happens to the contact lens on the cornea in vivo, it might create the feel of pull of the lens due to the increased rise of central part of the lens.
As a first step in the optical design process, we derive a recursive numerical calculation method that can give a solution to the Gaussian equation that the paraxial rays satisfy. Given the refractive power, the angle of incidence to the first principal plane of the lens, the angle of exit to the second principal plane of the lens, and the distance between the principal planes, the radii of curvature of the front and back surfaces of a lens can be obtained by applying the recursive numerical calculation method proposed in this paper according to the thickness of the lens. If a module consists of two or more lenses, the thickness and radius of curvature of each lens can be similarly determined after selecting the distance between the principal planes of the lens under the condition of the design specification while increasing the number of lenses one by one.
A mathematical model was proposed to analyze the damped motion of contact lens which is initially displaced from the equilibrium position. The model incorporates the differential equations and their numerical solution program, based on the formulations of restoring force arising from the capillary action in the tear-film layer between the lens and cornea. The model predicts the capillary action induced surface tension, time dependence of displacement of lens when it is released from the equilibrium position. It seems that the motion of lens is similar to the typical over-damped oscillation caused by the large viscous friction in the liquid layer between the cornea and lens. The effect of variables such as base curves, lens diameters and thickness of tear film layer were illustrated by the computer simulation of the derived program. The time required for the lens to return to the original position increases as the liquid layer thickness increases and it decreases as the diameter of lens increases. With the certain value of base curve the time interval is found to be minimum. The free vibrations of lenses were also simulated varying the parameters such as base curve, diameter, layer thickness. The resonant frequencies are inversely proportional to the liquid layer thickness and it increases as the lens diameter increases. The resonant frequency of lens has a maximum when the diameter is of certain value. If the external impulse or force of the same frequency as the natural frequency of contact lens acted on the cornea in vivo it may cause an excessive movement and thus it might cause the distortion 10 the lens or be pulled off the eye.
An equivalent lens is a lens which has the same total power of refraction and the same paraxial imaging characteristics for the marginal rays as another lens, but has a different axial thickness. In this study, an analytic lens conversion from a thick lens to its equivalent lens is investigated, then it is shown that the equivalent lens is a solution of a quadratic equation. Every thick lens corresponds to one of two real roots of this quadratic equation. Therefore, except in the case of a unique solution, the equation has a conjugate solution, the other of the two roots. The conjugate solution has the same axial thickness, power, and paraxial imaging characteristics, but it has different shape and aberration characteristics. The characteristics of an equivalent lens and its conjugate solution are examined by using a sample lens.
