  • In this study, research was performed to establish the measurement and frequency of analysis for maintenance monitoring by investigation of tunnel maintenance monitoring system in the tunnel which was installed in the Seoul metro line 5, 7 and 8, using that the domestic and foreign application case, results of analyzed maintenance monitoring in the domestic tunnel and legal safety management standard of the facility. The results of the monitoring management about analysis frequency to the present are considered that the problem about measuring frequency does not occur. According to the analysis results of the maintenance monitoring which are located on the 5, 6th subway line, they are analyzed that the stress of concrete lining and reinforced bar are converged gradually after 45 months. Therefore Monitoring of measurement and analysis frequency is conduct more often within about 4 years after the measuring instrument installation. Four years later, slowing the frequency of measurement is considered reasonable.

  • Recently, due to urban development and expansion, construction plans have been increasing adjacent to existing tunnel structures such as subways, roads, and large pipelines. Structural plans adjacent to existing tunnels have different effects on tunnel stability depending on the construction method, degree of proximity, and location of new structures. In particular, the pressure water tunnel shows a very large difference from other road tunnels and railway tunnels in geotechnical characteristics and operation characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to review the safety zone due to adjacent construction in consideration of the geotechnical characteristics of the water tunnel and the new sturure construction method. In this study, the existing tunnel safety zone standards were investigated. A stability evaluation performed numerical analysis considering the deterioration of concrete lining in operation and the characteristics of water tunnel. In addition, the impact of vibration caused by pile construction and blasting excavation of new structures was reviewed. Based on this, a pressure water tunnel safety zone was proposed in consideration of adjacent construction.

  • When constructing a subsea tunnel in discontinuous rock mass, fluid flow in joints has a great influence on the behavior of the tunnel so that hydro-mechanical coupled analysis should be performed for the stability estimation. In practice, relaxed rock load is generally used for the design of tunnel concrete lining. In a continuum analysis, a method based on the distribution of local safety factor around a tunnel was proposed for the estimation of a potential relaxed zone. However, in the case of discontinuous rock mass in which joints are developed, the whole stability of tunnels depends on the behavior of the joints. In this study, therefore, a method is proposed for the estimation of a potential relaxed zone occurred by the excavation of a tunnel in discontinuous rock mass. The suggested method is validated by sensitivity analysis and the comparison with the results of continuum analysis.

  • This paper studied the cause of the deterioration of the four 3-Arch tunnels built in mid-1990. The common deteriorations of the four 3-Arch tunnels were longitudinal cracks, leakage and efflorescence at the same parts of lining concrete. Three fourths of 3-Arch tunnels, there was high percentage longitudinal cracks and a quarter was low frequency about longitudinal cracks. So the material reviewed to find out the differences between two groups in construction process and analysis was conducted such as non-destructive testing, precise visual survey and safety evaluation of one tunnel which had bad ground condition As the result, the tunnels were safety condition and the primary deterioration occurred during the construction process, namely, problems arrangement of rebar and the effects of the blast at middle tunnel.

  • Utilization of the fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) material has been enlarged as a substitution material to the general construction materials having certain long-term problems such as corrosion, etc. However, it could be difficult to apply the FRP material, which has a linear shape generally, to an arch-shaped tunnel structure. Therefore, an attempt has been made in this study to develop a device to form a designed cross section of FRP material by pulling out with a curvature. A sample of the circled FRP product was successfully produced and then the sample has been tested to identify its physical characteristics. Then, intensive feasibility studies on the circled FRP panel to be used for a tunnel lining structure have been carried out by numerical analyses. As a result, it appears that the new circled FRP-concrete composite panel has a high capability to be used for a tunnel lining material without any structural problem.

  • In this study, cause of longitudinal crack which is found on duct slab of road tunnel is studied. In-depth investigation, such as visual inspection, non-destructive testing and geometrical surveying of duct slab, is carried out. In order to perform cause analysis, the investigated results are compared to the results of numerical analysis. Many factors, which cause longitudinal crack, are classified as constrained condition of the duct slab, location of the rebar, temperature, shrinkage and so on. According to the classified causes of longitudinal crack, numerical analysis is performed considering construction stage of the tunnel lining. Especially, in order to predict shrinkage stain due to discrepancy of curing date, ACI-209 model, KCI structural design code and other researcher's shrinkage test results are compared. The results show that shrinkage strain is one of the main factors causing longitudinal crack. Other investigated tunnels are classified along with the construction method of duct slab and patterns of cracks. As a result, improving ways to construct duct slab are suggested.

  • Recently, detecting damages of civil infrastructures from digital images using deep learning technology became a very popular research topic. In order to adapt those methodologies to the field, it is essential to explain robustness of deep learning models. Our research points out that the existing pixel-based deep learning model evaluation metrics are not sufficient for detecting cracks since cracks have linear appearance, and proposes a new evaluation methodology to explain crack segmentation deep learning model more rationally. Specifically, we design, implement and validate a methodology to generate tolerance buffer alongside skeletonized ground truth data and prediction results to consider overall similarity of topology of the ground truth and the prediction rather than pixel-wise accuracy. We could overcome over-estimation or under-estimation problem of crack segmentation model evaluation through using our methodology, and we expect that our methodology can explain crack segmentation deep learning models better.

  • Due to the increase in construction of tunnels, the burdens of maintenance works for tunnel structures have been increasing in Korea. In addition, the increase of traffic volume and aging of materials also threatens the safety of tunnel facilities, therefore, maintenance costs are expected to increase significantly in the future. Accordingly, automated condition assessment technologies like image-based tunnel scanning system for inspection and diagnosis of tunnel facilities have been proposed. For image-based tunnel scanning system, it is key to create a planar image through stitching of multiple images captured by tunnel scanning system. In this study, performance of feature-based stitching algorithms suitable for stitching tunnel scanning images was evaluated. In order to find a suitable algorithm SIFT, ORB, and BRISK are compared. The performance of the proposed algorithm was determined by the number of feature extraction, calculation speed, accuracy of feature matching, and image stitching result. As for stitching performance, SIFT algorithm was the best in all parts of tunnel image. ORB and BRISK also showed satisfactory performance and short calculation time. SIFT can be used to generate precise planar images. ORB and BRISK also showed satisfactory stitching results, confirming the possibility of being used when real-time stitching is required.

  • Textile-type heat exchangers installed on the tunnel walls for facilitating ground source heat pump systems, so called "energy textile", was installed in an abandoned railroad tunnel around Seocheon, South Korea. To evaluate thermal performance of the energy textile, a series of long-term monitoring was performed by artificially applying daily intermittent cooling and heating loads on the energy textile. In the course of the experimental measurement, the inlet and outlet fluid temperatures of the energy textile, pumping rate, temperature distribution in the ground, and air temperature inside the tunnel were continuously measured. From the long-term monitoring, the heat exchange rate was recorded as in the range of 57.6~143.5 W per one unit of the energy textile during heating operation and 362.3~558.4 W per one unit during cooling operation. In addition, the heat exchange rate of energy textile was highly sensitive to a change in air temperature inside the tunnel. The field measurements were verified by a 3D computational fluid dynamics analysis (FLUENT) with the consideration of air temperature variation inside the tunnel. The verified numerical model was used to evaluate parametrically the effect of drainage layer in the energy textile.
