  • This study examined the toughness improvement of a track shoe used as the undercarriage of excavator and bulldozer parts. The excavator is operated under poor conditions, such as the build-up field and quarry. Therefore, the track shoe requires high strength and impact toughness to endure immense shock while at work. The track shoe was made of heat treated boron steel. The sufficient possibility of hardenability with the theoretical Jominy curve for boron steel was confirmed while quenching. The Taguchi orthogonal array experiment method was used to optimize the process variables, such as area reduction ratio and heat treatment conditions (tempering temperature and holding time), to achieve toughness improvement. The toughness of the track shoe increased with increasing area reduction, and a tempering temperature of $210^{\circ}C$ and a tempering time of 80 min are beneficial for improving the toughness of the track shoe.

  • The purpose of this paper is to determine the effect of the autoclave inner pressure rate, heat-up rate, tool round angle, Thickness of core, height of joggle on defects, and to minimize the defects of aircraft sandwich structure reinforced with honeycomb core occurred in autoclave processing. The results showed that the geometry of aircraft sandwich structure and tool such as tool round angle, thickness of core, height of joggle, and the autoclave cure conditions such as inner pressure rate, heat up rate strongly affected the core movement, core wrinkle, bridge phenomenon of prepreg and depression of core that occurred in autoclave processing.

  • The mechanical properties such as the Young's modulus, damping ratio, vibration mode and hardness of the disk materials heat-treated under various conditions are measured, and the relations between there properties and the cutting characteristics such as early tip fracture are examined. The results obtained from this study are as follows. The circular saw with the V-Cr added disk has higher young's modulus and damping ratio than the saw with STC5 disk, preventing the early fracture of tungsten carbide due to the above properties. The circular saw with the disk which is subjected to the heat treatment at the quenching temperature of $830^{\circ}C$ and at the temperature of $550^{\circ}C$ have the best tool life and surface roughness.

  • Optimal heat treatment process in martensitic stainless steel such as SUS416 is investigated. The approach is based on the combination of the interpolation and extrapolation method of a standard heat treatment technology with the principle of quenching and tempering temperature difference. The relationship of the macroscopic structure, fracture toughness and ductility as well as the hardness and strength are considered to induce a simple rule to apply with feasibility. Consequently, Optimal heat treatment condition in martensitic stainless steel is proposed and is shown the better quality. It was found that the smaller pain size of microstructure gives the enhanced fracture toughness and ductility.

  • The tempering and magnetic annealing are used to improve the soft magnetic properties such as initial permeability coercivity and core loss of the KM35F alloy. The first heat treatmentis performed at the temperature less than the curie temperature of the KM35F alloy to remove the thermal stress for few hours in nitrogen atmosphere. The second stage heat treatment is performed the magnetic annealing at $500{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ for few hours in nitrogen atmosphere, and then quenching to room temperature in absence of oxygen. Finally, magnetic properties of the thermally treated KM35F alloy are investigated for application as a soft magnetic material of the ISO solenoid valve core and plunger.

  • In the present work, Taguchi method for electron beam welding(EBW) process in AISI 4130 steel plate has been adopted for investigating the contribution of effect of welding variables. $A L_8(2^7)$ orthogonal array is adopted to obtain the effect of adjustment parameters. The adjustment parameters consist of accelerating voltage, beam current, travel speed and focus currrent. And the quality features selected for the EBW process are bead width of weldment, reinforcement, penetration depth, undercut and area of weld metal. Variance analysis is performed in order to check the effect of adjustment parameters on EBW. The mechanical properties of electron beam welded joints for each heat treatment conditions are investigated in comparison with those of base metal, especially from the view point of tensile and impact properties.

  • This study is to evaluate dynamic fracture characteristics of alloy tool steel, STD-11, according to various tempering conditions (heat treatment). The dynamic fracture initiation toughness and some of the dynamic fracturing characteristics were evaluated by using the instrumented Charpy impact testing procedures. The distributions of Victors hardness and dynamic fracture initiation toughness with respect to varying tempering temperatures are found to be symmetric type with the help of experimental results for the STD-11. It is also found that the dynamic fracture initiation toughness is a inverse proportion to Vickers hardness. In this experimental study, it is found that the best heat treatment condition is 55$0^{\circ}C$ tempering in alloy tool steel, STD-11, because the results show high values of Vickers hardness and dynamic fracture initiation toughness.
