  • The purpose of this study is to verify the causal relationship between social withdrawal and peer alienation among Korean children. The survey study participants were 2,110 children in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. The 5-year longitudinal data (Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey; KCYPS) of 1st grade elementary school student cohort was used. Latent Growth Modeling was applied to analyze the causality over time of social withdrawal and peer isolation. The results revealed that the trajectories of children's social withdrawal decreased over time. Children's social withdrawal showed significant individual differences in terms of initial value and rates of change. The initial value and slope of children's social withdrawal had an effect on the peer alienation in the 3rd grade; however, there was no significant effect on the peer alienation in the 5th grade.

  • This study investigated the relationships of preschool children's interactive peer play, stimulated home environment, and mother-child interaction. A total of 255 children were selected in this study. Data were analyzed with Pearson correlations and covariance structural analysis by using SPSS and AMOS, a statistical program for structural equation modeling. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, interactive peer play was associated with stimulated home environment and mother-child interaction. Second, the results confirmed the pathway from stimulated home environment via mother-child interaction to interactive peer play showing a significantly good model fit. The paths from stimulated home environment to children's interactive peer play were mediated by mother-child interaction.

  • This research was conducted to investigate what effect personal relationship personality and temperament have on peer competence of a child. To carry out the research, this experiment subjected 137 preschoolers with age range of 4 to 5 years old attending in 5 education institution for preschoolers in Seoul. The result showed that personal relationship personality of a child and his temperament hold certain influence on peer competence. To take a detailed look on this matter we divided the independent variable into low factors. The result showed that the peer competence was influenced by the introverted personality and outgoing personality which are the sub factors of personality and was also affected by physiological regulation and adaptability which is the sub factor of the temperament.

  • Objective: To review the literature on development in the peer relationships of the adolescents within the context of their parents' divorce. Method: The cognitive and sociocultural literature was searched to analyze the social interactions of the adolescents of divorced parents. Results: The evidence supports the variations in adolescents' peer relations based on their family structure. Comparisons with the adolescents of the nuclear families and the step-families suggest certain types of interactions the adolescents of divorced parents experience. Conclusions: Divorce of the parents is associated with the difficulties their children at adolescent experience, such as the higher level of social isolation among their peers or their incompetence in social skills. For there is not much known about the integration into the world of peers of the adolescents from the divorced families, while their general psychological and cognitive development after the separation is often studied, future study will need to focus on their peer interactions at their school environment and the social treatment for the possible hardships in their peer relations.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of adolescents' mobile phone dependency on depression and aggression and to identify mediating effects of parenting attitudes and peer relationships. This study used data from the 4th and 5th waves of 2010 KCYPS (Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey). Structural Equation Model(SEM) was conducted to examine the mediating effects of parenting attitudes and peer relationships. The results showed that adolescents' mobile phone dependency had positive effects on depression and aggression. In addition, the relationship between adolescents' mobile phone dependency and depression was partially mediated by parenting attitudes and peer relationships. The relationship between adolescents' mobile phone dependency and aggression was also partially mediated by parenting attitudes and peer relationships. Based on these findings, further suggestions are provided to reduce adolescents' depression and aggression by decreasing mobile phone dependency and improving parenting attitudes and peer relationships.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between children's self-esteem, peer attachment, parenting attitudes, and children's grit, and to specifically identify the influence of children's self-esteem, peer attachment, and parenting attitudes on children's grit. The characteristics of the survey subjects were identified through frequency analysis and descriptive statistics analysis of the 11th year of the Korea Children's Panel (2018) data, and Pearson's moment correlation coefficient was calculated for correlation analysis between major variables. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the influence of children's self-esteem, peer attachment, and parenting attitudes on children's grit. The research results are as follows. First, children's self-esteem, peer attachment, and parenting attitudes were found to be positively correlated. Second, the child's self-esteem was found to have a positive influence on the child's grit, and among the peer attachment sub-variables, peer trust was found to have an influence, and among the sub-factors of parenting attitude, 'mother' affection/involvement, 'father' Democratic relationships were found to have an effect. In other words, it can be seen that children's self-esteem at the personal level, peer trust at the school level, and maternal affection and paternal relationship at the family level are useful variables that strengthen children's grit. Accordingly, in order to improve children's grit level, we must consider promotion measures through intervention and support at a multifaceted level.

  • This study investigated the effects of maternal acceptance attitudes towards children's emotional expressiveness and children's emotional intelligences on peer interaction. A total of 145 Korean mothers with children from 3-5 years old and children's teachers were selected from 4 kindergartens and 6 daycare centers in Incheon and Kyunggi areas. The results were as follows. First, generally, children's emotional intelligence was significantly different depending on gender of the children. Second, there was no difference based on age and gender in maternal acceptance attitudes towards a child's positive emotional expressiveness, but there was a difference based on gender in maternal acceptance attitudes toward a child's negative emotional expressiveness. Third, the children's positive peer interaction was significantly different depending on gender of the children, but the children's negative peer interaction was significantly different based on age and gender of the children.

  • Objective: The purpose of this research was to examine the moderating effects of relationships on the association between temperament and peer play interaction. Methods: The participants were 606 four year olds who were recruited from day care centers and preschools located in Incheon and Gyeonggi province. Teacher-child relationship was measured with Student-Teacher Relationship Scale. Peer interactions were measured with Penn Interactive Peer Play Scale. Temperament was measured with Child Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ). The data was analysed using Pearson correlation and hierarchial regression. Results: Teacher-child intimacy moderated the associations between inhibitory control and play disruption as well as between emotionality and play disconnection. Moreover, Teacher-child conflict moderated the association between emotionality and play disconnection. Conclusion/Implications: The findings suggest that teacher-child relationships buffer risks conferred by temperament.
