Cable TV with largest subscription base in pay TV market has difficulty in managing the task of digital switch over. This study analyzed the factors in delay of cable TV switch over and examined the impact of pay TV market structure and competition. The delaying factors turned out to be the lack of incentives and resources of cable TV operators, insufficient policy measures and acceptance tolerance issues of subscribers. Since cable TV operators with monopolistic status in pay TV market had continuous profit from analog service, they were not responsive to digital switch over which requires additional investment. Policy measures including support for the low income household and mandatory cut-off point for stopping analog broadcasting. Subscriber's willingness to accept digital broadcasting in terms of price sensitivity and preference for convenient operation also played a role. Introduction of IPTV in pay TV market influenced the speed of digital switch over of cable TV operators. MSOs with economies of scale showed higher digital switch over rate than independent SO.

본 연구에서는 다양하게 정의되고 있는 IP-TV 정의 및 매체 특성을 살펴보고, 이를 통해 IP-TV의 개념을 분명히 하였다. 또한 IP-TV 서비스를 위해 필요한 플랫폼, 네트워크, 콘텐츠 및 IP-TV 성패에 영향을 주는 여러 요소들을 디지털케이블 TV와 비교 분석하였고, 분석 결과 디지털케이블 TV와 IP-TV는 물리적 측면이나 서비스 제공 콘텐츠 측면에서 거의 동일함을 알 수 있었다.

디지털 케이블TV서비스는 헤드엔드(Head-End)센터로부터 QoS (Quality of Service)가 보장되는 케이블 HFC(Hybrid FiberCable)망을 통해 디지털 영상 방송이나 양방향서비스를 가입자 단말까지 제공하는 방송 통신 융합서비스이다. 본 고에서는 디지털 케이블TV 서비스를 제공하기 위한 디지털 케이블 네트워크 기술에 대해서 설명하고, 디지털 방송 및 양방향 서비스를 송출하는 방송센터시스템과 디지털 방송 기술에 대해 알아본 후 마지막으로 디지털 케이블TV의 향후 전망에 대해서 살펴보기로 한다.

Due to rapid convergence trends in the digital pay TV market, differentiation among the competing medias decreases and substitutability is increasing. The current study aims to explain the effect of service substitutability among competing media on the size of domestic digital pay TV subscribers. For the analysis, the Lotka-Volterra model, an ecological competitive diffusion model, was used to obtain the basic model for a simulation study. A simulation was performed by adjusting independent variables of substitutability to estimate the size of subscriber for particular media. The relationship between the digital cable TV and the IPTV is identified as a predator-prey relationship and the digital cable TV is found to be superior to the IPTV. The simulation results showed that the increase of convergence and substitutability result in the decrease of the entire media market. Especially, the IPTV is estimated to face the greatest loss in this context.

최근 발행한 LG경제연구소 보고서에 의하면 올해 연말부터 시작될 디지털 위성 방송은 풍부한 채널, 선명한 화질 및 음향 다양한 부가 서비스를 제공할 것으로 보이며, 가전, 컨텐츠, 전자상거래 등 관련 비즈니스에도 상당한 파급효과를 몰로 올 전망이라고 설명했다. 위성, 지상파, 케이블 방송 등은 TV방송을 수신하는 방식에서 차이점이 있다. 위성방송은 방송국에서 전송한 방송신호가 위성을 통해 시청자에게 전달되며, 시청자는 접시 형태의 안테나를 TV에 연결함으로써 방송신호를 수신할수 있다. 반면 지상파 방송은 방송국에서 전송탑을 통해 전송한 지상파 방송신호를 옥외 혹은 옥내 안테나를 통해 수신하는 방식이며, 케이블 방송은 동축 케이블을 통해 방송신호를 수신한다.

The digital signal is terminated on Dec.31, 2012. But most of the analog cable subscribers are faced with the difficult reception of the digital because the government has defined the terrestrial broadcast as digital transition obligation operators. It is estimated that half analog of the total pay-TV subscriber that is approximately 10million households that are directly receiving terrestrial signal must hold the digital TV or DtoA convertor to transit digital. But cable system subscriber should buy Set-top box that are expensive and pay the expensive rates. The cast of analog cable subscribers has been classified as a group that can cause the most damage after digital switch. This study investigate the problem, and cause, solution of the analog cable subscribers that are placed in the blind spots of the digital switch.

Local cable channels has been contributing to settlement of grass root democracy and local business facilitation in decentralization era compared to other broadcasting media, and duly performs its role as local-tied media and produces local closeness type programs. But this is the time of need for change of perception by the producers, business entrepreneurs and relevant organizations on various production environment following process of conversion to digital cable TV. For successful settlement of local digital cable channels, this study has forecasted change on broadcasting production and organization following conversion of digital cable TV through the in-depth interview with people who produce and organize actual programs, and factors that interfere with digital cable TV conversion. Furthermore, the study learned plans to establish role and function of local cable channel as new close media to realize local value.

This study deals with the effects of the extension of terrestrial TV VOD holdback on the viewing behavior focusing on IPTV & digital cable TV. And this study presents the implication by analyzing a time series trend of the digital media service. Thus researcher has analyzed the VOD performance trend of IPTV & digital cable TV, based on the real data of media player's internal fact sheet. First, researcher confirmed that the repetition of the peak value goes to January and August seasonally. Also, it was confirmed that the viewing rate of terrestrial broadcasting companies is affected by the hit drama program. And researcher confirmed that the terrestrial VOD, movie and kids VOD, and terrestrial VOD purchases is falling down by analyzing a time series relationship. Terrestrial broadcasting companies did an extension of the holdback for the purpose of trying to increase the viewership of the broadcast, but it was confirmed that it was reduced both purchasing desire VOD viewing and viewing of the broadcast audience rather. Thus the researcher expect the customer familiar policy of media players in the future.

최근 본격적인 지상파 디지털 방송 서비스가 급속히 확산되면서 케이블 TV와 지상파 TV에 공통으로 사용되는 셋탑박스(settop-box)개발이 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 또한 이러한 셋탑박스를 검증할 수 있는 검증 어플리케이션의 필요성이 증가하고 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 지상파 TV와 케이블 TV에 공용으로 사용되는 디지털 셋탑박스(settop-box)가 ACAP과 OCAP 미들웨어 표준에 따라 개발되었는지 여부를 검증할 수 있는 어플리케이션을 설계하고 구현한다. 이 검증 어플리케이션은 ACAP과 OCAP 표준에 명시된 자바 API를 셋탑박스에서 제공하는지 여부와 올바른 필수 기능의 구현 여부를 검증할 수 있다. 그리고 실험을 통하여 본 논문에서 구현한 검증 어플리케이션을 사용하면 OCAP 표준의 경우 99%, ACAP표준의 경우 95%를 검증할 수 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Digital broadcasting areas are leading information technology and having been strengthen the competitiveness of industries. In this paper, we developed HSS(Home Stream Station) for recording and transmitting digital broadcasting on digital TV without additional devices, which is based on cable TV network at home. The HSS can record a broadcasting program selected by user while digital TV shows the other channel. User can watch the program stored on the HSS at any time and any digital TV in the home. LAN interface of the HSS was also developed for supplying high quality digital broadcasting-contents through home network using IP-STB(Set Top Box).
