An aerodynamic design for centrifugal compressor which was applied to medium speed diesel engine has been done. First of all, exact compressor specifications must be defined by accurate engine system matching. This matching program has been developed. Using the meanline prediction method, geometric design and performance curves for compressor were established and verified by comparing three dimensional viscous CFD results. The deviation at the design point was about 2.3%. Combustor has been designed and manufactured for the performance test of medium speed diesel engine turbocharger. Fuel nozzle of combustor was designed and its characteristics was analyzed by PIV and PDPA test equipment. Through these results, spray characteristics were studied and flow coefficient equation was deduced.
An experimental study was performed to investigate the characteristics of combustion pressure and exhaust emissions when the pilot injection timing and EGR rate were changed in a CRDI 4-cylinder diesel engine. The pilot injection timing and EGR rate have a significant impact on the combustion and emission characteristics of diesel engine. In this study, the pilot injection timing and EGR rate variation were conducted to 2000rpm of engine speed with torque 50Nm. Combustion pressure and heat release rate were decreased under high EGR rate conditions but increased under the pilot injection timing $20^{\circ}$(BTDC). IMEP and the maximum pressure in cylinder(Pmax) were decreased under the same injection timing with the increase of EGR rate. The NOx emission was decreased with increasing the EGR rate. On the other hand, in the same injection timing conditions, CO, HC, $CO_2$ emissions were increased with increasing the EGR rate.
Environmental regulations are being reinforced for the solution of environmental pollution, that are global issues. Exhaust gas regulations of off-road engines also demand stepwise reduction emission from beginning of Tier 4 interim(2013). Characteristically, Tier 4 regulation apply the NRTC mode which is a transient cycle. And technical studies using NRTC mode are uncommon. In this study, for satisfy the Tier 4 final regulation on the NRTC mode, experimental study was conducted using a 3.4 L off-road engine. Fuel injection timing and injector hole number are chosen as parameters for investigation of combustion and exhaust gas characteristics on off-road diesel engine.
Uncontrolled regeneration characteristics of two different type SiC DPFs(diesel particulate filters) were investigated by DPF test rig devised to facilitate DPF evaluation, especially for regeneration and MSL(maximum soot loading) test similar to engine dynamometer test. In order to estimate the limits of maximum filter temperature and temperature gradient causing filter fracture, such as crack or whitening, the temperature distributions inside the filter were measured by thermocouples. The maximum filter temperature was observed near the rear plane of central filter region due to heat accumulation by exothermic reaction of PM but the maximum temperature gradient occurred at the boundary of high filter temperature. These two parameters induced the different SiC DPFs to fracture with different modes, whitening and crack.
To reduce the soot and NOx simultaneously, a new system of stratified injection is developed. This system discharges stratified diesel-methanol in a D. I. Diesel Engine. Nozzle and delivery valve of conventional injection system were remodeled to inject diesel and methanol from one injector sequently. The quantity of diesel and methanol was controled precisely by micrometers mounted on the injection control lack. The real injection ratio of dual fuel was measured by volumetric ratio. We could confirm the capabilities that soot and NOx simultaneously were reduced by diesel-methanol stratified injection from the results of in-cylinder pressure data obtained from combustion experiment by stratified injection, heat release rate and mass fraction bumed.
The capability of pilot injection with small fuel quantity at all engine operating conditions is one of the main feature of the common rail system. The purpose of the pilot injection is to lower the engine noise and to reduce the NOx emissions. This study describes the pilot spray structure characteristics of the common-rail diesel injectors, solenoid-driven and piezo-driven type, with different electric driving characteristics So, three common-rail injectors with different electric current wave were used in this study. The pilot spray characteristics such as spray speed, spray tip penetration, and spray angle were obtained by spray images, which is measured by the back diffusion light illumination method with optical system for high-speed temporal photography. Also the CFD analysis was carried out for fuel behavior under high pressure in between needle and nozzle of solenoid-driven injector to know the condition of initial injection at experiment test. It was found that pilot injection of common-rail system was effected by rate of injection and temperature of injected fuel and electrical characteristic of the driven injector.
This study describes effects of DME additives on combustion and exhaust emissions characteristics including nano-particle in a single cylinder compression ignition engine. Considered additives include bio-diesel, n-butanol, and MTBE for increasing kinematic viscosity. Among three additives, n-butanol showed the greatest kinematic viscosity. In addition MTBE showed the highest vapor pressure. In the present study mixing ratios of additives were kept constant at 1 and 10% by volume. Experiments were performed at 1200rpm engine speed and nano-particles were measured by SMPS (Scanning mobility particle sizer) devices. Results of combustion characteristics showed that considered additives had little effects on combustion pressure. However, patterns of heat release rate were dependent on properties of additives. Nano-particles of MTBE were the lowest among considered additives.
Atomization speed of diesel fuel injected from 8-hole nozzle is faster than that of 7-hole nozzle because the hole diameter of 8-hole nozzle is smaller than that of 7-hole nozzle. But both insufficient distance between the fuel sprays and short penetration of injected sprays through 8-hole nozzle hole cause many harmful effects on combustion. In this study, we installed the 8-hole injectors to diesel 2.0 liter class engine, and optimized in-cylinder swirl and penetration via selecting and matching proper cylinder head and combustion bowl. Through this process, we found out the performance and emission potential of 8-hole nozzle installed engine are better than those of 7-hole nozzle installed one.
This paper described the effect of the multiple injections on the stability of combustion and emission characteristics in a direct injection diesel engine at various operating conditions. In order to investigate the influence of multiple injections in a diesel engine, the fuel injection timing was varied one main injection and two pilot injections at various conditions. The experimental apparatus consisted of DI diesel engine with four cylinders, EC dynamometer, multi-stage injection control system, and exhaust emissions analyzer. The combustion and emission characteristics were analyzed for the main, pilot-main injection, pilot-pilot-main injection strategies. It is revealed that the combustion pressure was smoothly near the top dead center and the coefficient of variations is reduced due to the effect of pilot injection. Also, $NO_x$ emissions are dramatically decreased with pilot injection because the decrease of rate of heat release. However, the soot is increased at early pilot injection and main injection.
To meet the Tier-4 emission standard, a variety of combustion technology in the field of off-road engine has been applied in conjunction with the engine after treatment technology. In this study, as the basis study for applying VGT and HPL EGR to 3.6 L CRDi engine, exhaust gas characteristics and fuel economy characteristics are confirmed in accordance with VGT and EGR operating conditions. Consequently, in the EGR applicable conditions, 60% VGT vane duty condition was confirmed that the trade-off characteristics between NOx and smoke are advantageous. In addition, in view of BSFC, VGT vane duty is considered desirable to control at around 50%.
