Screen Printing Designs using the Lotus as a Source of Inspiration and Selected Design Criteria by E. Paul Torrance (E.Paul Torrance 의 디자인 기준에 의하여 선택된 연화문(蓮花紋)을 응용한 스크린 프린팅 디자인 연구)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 「Guiding Crieative Talent」의 저자이자 교수인 E.Pual Torrance에 의하여 제시된 디자인 기준(design criteria) 중에 3가지 디자인 기준을 선택하여, 스크린 프린팅기법에 의거, 일련의 디자인을 제작하는 것이다. 이 디자인 기준은 1958년, Torrance에 의하여 수행된 \"The Minnesota Tests of Creative Thinking\" 중 일부이다. 그는 \"창의적인 발상전개에 있어서 보다 더 주의를 요하는 것은 마지막 생산물(the products)이 아니라 그것의 과정(the process)인 것이다.\"라고 강조해 왔으며, 창의적 사고에 관한 개념을 제시해 왔다. 본 연구의 디자인은 그 창작의 착상의 모티브(motif)로써 연화문(蓮花紋)을 선택하여 다양한 디자인의 스크린 프린팅을 창작하였다. 12개의 디자인이 제작되었데, 그것은 Torrance에 의하여 제안된 약 20개의 기준(criteria) 가운데 저자가 디자인 착상에 있어서 최소한의 기본요소라 생각되어, 임의로 선택한 3가지 기준에 의하여 만들어졌다. :3가지 기준이란 1) 모티브(motif)의 수적증가(multiplication) 2) 모티브(motif)의 위치변화 3) 모티브(motif)의 모양변화이다. 전체적인 디자인과 테두리 디자인(border design)이 선택적으로 디자인 과정에 포함되었으며, 최종적으로 12개의 디자인이 선택, 1가지의 색채를 이용하여 스크린 프린팅에 의하여 제작되었다. 디자인 제작과정으로, Torrance의 각각의 디자인 기준에 의한 여러 장의 스케치를 그린 후, 그중 12개의 스케치를 임의로 선택하여 옷감위에 프린팅하였다. 디자인 제작 결과, 저자가 선택한 3개의 디자인 기준만으로도 다양한 수의 서로 다른 디자인 창작이 가능하였으며 본 연구에서는 1개의 디자인 기준을 선택 응용하였으나 보다 많은 디자인 기준을 선택하여 동시에 비교 연구하는 것도 필요하다고 본다. 그리고 1개 이상의 디자인 모티브(motif)를 함께 디자인 착상에 이용하는 것도 가능하다고 본다.

A study on the jewelry design inspired by birds in Chinese Sanhaeyeong (중국 산해경에 나타난 조류를 모티브한 주얼리 디자인 개발 연구)

  • Artworks inspired by birds have consistently enjoyed popularity, both in the past and present. Designs featuring birds from mythology have particularly garnered significant admiration. Therefore, this study aims to develop into the jewelry design with bird motifs from "Sanhaegyeong", a representative work of Chinese mythology. The research analyzes the characteristics of birds depicted in "Sanhaegyeong" and investigates design cases inspired by these birds. Birds in "Sanhaegyeong" are broadly categorized into divine birds and monstrous birds. Divine birds are predominantly represented with diverse color combinations and unified tones, while monstrous birds are primarily expressed in contrasting colors such as red, green, and white. The study further scrutinizes the forms, colors, and symbolism of jewelry inspired by birds in "Sanhaegyeong". These works predominantly utilize various colors, green, and red. By integrating shapes and patterns relevant to the era associated with the origin of "Sanhaegyeong", designers applied them in the designs, taking into consideration the contextual background and the relevance of design forms. It is anticipated that these research findings will be valuable to designers intrigued by mythical bird designs.

Butterfly Motif Design in Contemporary Fashion Collection - Focusing on VOGUE from 2019 to 2023 - (현대 패션컬렉션에 표현된 나비모티브 디자인 분석 -2019년~2023년 VOGUE를 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study was to pay attention to the increase in the frequency of expression of butterflies and insects, whose decrease in the number of individuals is symbolized as a measure of environmental pollution, among the various motifs of nature as we go through the COVID-19, when we realized the importance of nature. The scope of this study was limited to fashion collection fashion show photos and interview articles of online for fashion collections from 2019 to 2023. As a result of the study, 185 butterfly motivation fashion design appeared, and digital printing techniques were the most used as a type of plane expression method. Along with this, techniques such as quilting, embroidery, and beading have appeared a lot as techniques to express the planar motif of butterflies. As for the three-dimensional expression types, 3D printing, laser cutting, corsage techniques, and draping techniques showed similar proportion. It can be seen that the expressed butterfly motif had more realistic description the shape of the butterfly as it was than abstract expressions. In conclusion, it can be seen that the butterfly motif fashion design over the past five years contains a stronger message about the environment than the butterfly motif fashion in the past. It was confirmed that it is a motif with a great symbolic meaning that can convey an eco-friendly message beyond just the morphological beauty and colorful design elements of the butterfly.

An Empirical Approach on Textile Designer's Mental Model focused on the Motif Development for designing CAD tool of Digital Textile Printing (텍스타일 디자이너의 인지적 모형에 대한 실증적 접근 - 디지털 나염 전용 캐드 설계를 위한 모티브 개발을 중심으로-)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 비디오/오디오 프로토콜 분석 방식을 이용해서 텍스타일 디자인 프로세스 중 모티브 개발 단계에서 디지털 나염(DTP : Digital Textile Printing) 전용 캐드(CAD)와 같은 디자인 저작도구를 설계할 때 어떤 요소에 중점을 두고 개발 할 것인지에 대한 향상된 지침을 마련하는데 있다. 텍스타일 디자인 프로세스에 대한 프로토콜 분석을 위해 선행 연구를 고찰하여 디자인 행동 범주의 틀을 하향식(top-down)방식으로 설정하고 실제 행동 프로토콜 (action protocol) 분석을 통해 상향식(bottom-up)방식으로 세부 디자인 행동을 도출하였다. 텍스타일 디자인은 선행연구의 건축디자인과는 다른 특징을 지니기 때문에 프로토콜 분석에서도 새로운 디자인 행동 범주(action category)가 필요하게 되었다. 이를 위하여 모델 휴먼 프로세서(Model Human Processor)이론을 근거로 디자인 행동을 모터 행동(motor action), 지각 행동(perceptual action), 인지 행동(cognitive action)의 세 가지 범주[4]로 나누었으며 텍스타일 디자인 프로세스에 적합한 코딩 스킴(coding scheme)을 개발하였다. 본 연구에서는 이 새로운 코딩 스킴을 토대로 디자인 저작도구에 대한 디자이너의 인지적 모형(Cognitive Model)을 개발하였다. 이렇게 개발된 디자이너의 인지적 모형은 디지털 나염을 기반으로 하는 모티브 개발 단계에서 스케치와 렌더링에 대한 디자인 저작 도구의 향상된 설계지침 뿐만 아니라 방향도 시사하였다.

The Visual Representation Methods based on natural objects in Information Design (자연물을 모티브로 활용한 정보디자인의 시각화 기법)

  • The issues of generation, delivery, and processing of information which have been treated importantly in information design field have evolved along with the evolution of the humankind. In the modern society, the vast amount of, complex, and artificial forms of information such as big-data is accounted for the majority and claims of interest focusing on how to effectively design those kinds of information are being increased. This study explored the visualization methods applied with the natural objects as motives as one of the ways for users to easily get their perception and cognition to the information. Nature has long influenced on the human figural activities. The natural objects take the optimum visual shapes and provide the diverse inspiration and emotion to the designers in the various design fields such as product design, architecture design, and so on. Through the literature studies, we suggested the compositional principles of natural objects and the principles for observing and analysing natural objects as a principle to use the natural objects for information design domain. We, also, suggested the information design approach model which is inspired the natural objects by linking those two kinds of principles to the information design's visual realization factors and explored the possibilities of utilizing of the approach model by the case studies.

Visual Expression Effect by Digitization of Embroidery Design (자수 디자인의 디지털화에 의한 시각적 표현효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide basic information about various methods to easily affix unique embroidery effects to clothes due to the current expansion of digital fashion technology. A comparison of design techniques using virtual and real clothing was used to show the visual expression of embroidery designs. Actual embroidery motifs were created using a computer embroidery machine, DTP embroidery motifs were made by utilizing digitalization techniques, and digital motifs were produced. Then patch pocket type T-shirts were produced using each embroidery technique to compare the visual expression effects on clothing. The results of this comparison are as follows: for real clothing color (3.5), texture (4.0), gloss (3.8), and thickness (3.5). It was found that the color and thickness of the embroidery floss was visually sufficiently show the design texture and gloss. In terms of the embroidery design on virtual garments, the resutls of color (3.8), texture (4.3), gloss (3.9), and thickness (3.6) showed a high degree of similarity to the non-virtual results, confirming that digitized embroidery motifs are also a tool that can fully realize unique embroidery effect.

An Exploratory Approach to Textile Designer's Cognition Model -focused on the Stage of Motif Development- (텍스타일 디자이너의 인지 모형에 대한 탐색적 접근 -모티브 개발 단계를 중심으로-)

  • This study was an exploratory approach to the cognitive model of textile designers on the stage of motif development in textile design process. Prior to the main research, several previous studies adopting methods of video/audio protocol analysis were reviewed. On the basis of the review, the categories of design action were derived as an analysis frame by application of top-down access method, meanwhile the sub-groups of each category of design action were identified through a bottom-up access method. To summarize the research result, total three categories of textile design action appeared based on the theory of ‘Human processor’ model : ‘motor action’, ‘perceptual action’ and 'cognitive action'. In next, a new coding scheme suitably explaining these three categories of fertile design action was developed. Finally, a cognitive model of textile designer on the stage of motif development, employing the new coding scheme, was suggested in this study.

A Fashion Design Recommender Agent System using Collaborative Filtering and Sensibilities related to Textile Design Factors (텍스타일 기반의 협력적 필터링 기술과 디자인 요소에 따른 감성 분석을 이용한 패션 디자인 추천 에이전트 시스템)

  • In the life environment changed with not only the quality and the price of the products but also the material abundance, it is the most crucial factor for the strategy of product sales to investigate consumer's sensibility and preference degree. In this perspective, it is necessary to design and merchandise the products in cope with each consumer's sensibility and needs as well as its functional aspects. In this paper, we propose the Fashion Design Recommender Agent System (FDRAS-pro) for textile design applying collaborative filtering personalization technique as one of the methods of material development centered on consumer's sensibility and preference. For a collaborative filtering system based on textile, Representative-Attribute Neighborhood is adopted to determine the number or neighbors that will be used for preferences estimation. Pearson's Correlation Coefficient is used to calculate similarity weights among users. We build a database founded on the sensibility adjectives to develop textile designs by extracting the representative sensibility adjectives from users' sensibility and preferences about textile designs. FDRAS-pro recommends textile designs to a customer who has a similar propensity about textile. To investigate the sensibility and emotion according to the effect of design factors, fertile designs were analyzed in terms of 9 design factors, such as, motif source, motif-background ratio, motif variation, motif interpretation, motif arrangement, motif articulation, hue contrast, value contrast, chroma contrast. Finally, we plan to conduct empirical applications to verify the adequacy and the validity of our system.

A Presentation of Guidelines for Layout Techniques in Designing of the Floral-patterned Scarves based on Consumer Emotion : Part II (소비자 감성을 기반으로 한 꽃문양 스카프 디자인의 레이아웃 기법 제안 : 제 2보)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 (1)꽃문양 스카프 디자인의 레이아웃 변인이 소비자의 감성에 미치는 영향을 본 연구의 제 1보의 결과 및 전통적인 디자인 이론들과 비교하고, (2) 소비자 감성분석을 기반으로 하여 꽃문양 스카프 디자인을 위한 레이아웃 프로토타입을 제시하는 데에 있다. 이를 위하여 두 종류의 꽃 모티브를 세 가지 레이아웃 변인에 따라 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션하여 총 20개의 자극물을 개발하였다. 또한 44개의 형용사쌍으로 구성된 7점의 의미미분척도를 개발하여 세 가지 레이아웃 변인에 따른 소비자의 감성효과를 측정하였다. 피험자는 편의표집된 110명의 20대 여성 소비자였으며, 이들에게 자극물을 제시하고 응답척도에 감성반응을 응답하게 하였다. 총 100부의 데이터를 사용하여 주성분분석, 다변량분석, 삼원변량분석 및 다중비교검정을 실시하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.: (1) 꽃문양 스카프 디자인에 대한 소비자의 감성은 ‘호오(좋아함-싫어함)·심미감’, ‘액센트감’, ‘온화함’ 그리고 ‘리듬감’의 네 가지 하위차원으로 구성하였으며, 이는 제 1보의 결과와 일치하였다. (2) 제 1보와 2보의 결과에 따르면, 꽃 모티브의 크기가 큰 비반복배열의 디자인이 다른 디자인들보다 더 ‘온화감’있게 느껴졌다. (3) 제 1보와 2보의 결과를 종합하여, 두 세트의 꽃문양 스카프 디자인의 레이아웃 프로토타입을 제시하였다.
