A Study on Paper Currencies Design as Cultural Symbols -Focus on Case Studies from Eleven Nations- (문화적 상징기호로서의 지폐 디자인 연구 - 세계 11개국 사례비교를 중심으로 -)

  • Paper currency is a cultural symbol sign representing identity of a nation as well as a tool of barter system and a measure of value. The purpose of this study is to analyze the design characteristics shown in the pattern of the paper currencies of advanced countries and Korea and to make comparative analysis of the image type of each nation as a cultural code. The results show that 1) the usability of paper currency design was evaluated by denominations, size type, color, braille system and the paper currencies of Switzerland and EU were judged superior to those of the other counties. 2) The national image type represented paper currencies was classified as 'state oriented type' and 'culture & art oriented type'. The countries of Korea, U.S.A, Japan etc. have on the paper currencies the ruling class who contributed to organizing the national system foundation emphasizing their nationalism. In the case of European countries, their paper currencies reveal a variety of citizen who have contributed to art, science, music, architecture without distinction of gender and this fact puts an emphasis on egalitarianism and equality of both senders and importance or cultural art. 3) Paper currency design of Switzerland, Netherlands, France, U.K. was visualized as an art work with utilization of work-type subject, brilliant color, CG technique, unique layout etc. This study provides us with a valuable opportunity to examine the present state of the Korean paper currencies design in Comparison With those of the world's advanced countries. It is expected that this study could be a resource material for new paper currency design and emphasize the importance of the paper currencies representing a national image as a cultural design.

A Study on the Application of Universal Design in the Public Cultural Space -Focused on the Museums and Art Museums in Busan City- (공공 문화공간의 유니버설디자인 적용 현황 연구 -부산시 박물관 및 미술관을 중심으로-)

  • This study takes cultural space facilities as the research object, trying to grasp the status quo of universal design. By selecting Busan Museum, Busan Museum of Art, and Busan Museum of Modern Art, masters the applicability and characteristics of universal design, and gets the improvements. First, through literature review, the concepts of universal design and evaluation elements are considered. Secondly, obtains five evaluation elements by analyzing previous research. Thirdly, a field survey of various cultural spaces were conducted. gains the relevant status and problems of universal design. According to the results of the detailed evaluation project of cultural space also shuowed that the Busan Museum of Modern Art, Busan Museum, and Busan Museum of Modern Art followed in order, while the average applicability of the universal design of the three cultural spaces accounts for 53.6%. In addition, the results of the average evaluation of the facilities show that the additional facilities are the best, in turn internal facilities, sanitation facilities, other facilities, and guidelines facilities. In the future, it is deemed necessary to conduct regular surveys on universal design and renovate related facilities for public cultural facilities.

  • 본 연구에서는 흉물스러운 외관으로 도심의 애물단지로 전락해버린 전주에 대한 인식을 변화시키기 위해 문화콘텐츠 관점에서 전주 디자인을 제시하였다. 여기에서는 문화콘텐츠의 핵심 함의를 대중들과의 경험과 감정의 소통을 긴밀하게 하고, 문화적 의미가 생산 순환하게 하는 창구 역할로 보았다. 이러한 전제 아래 전주 디자인이 가져야 하는 가치 즉, 기능성, 통합성, 연속성, 감응성을 도출하였으며 이를 반영하는 전주 디자인 다섯 가지를 제시하였다.

A study on the 'Fun' in Hangul Iconicity (한글 도상성에 나타난 '재미'에 관한 연구)

  • Hangul 's iconicity based on the scientific creation principle makes it possible to expand into various designs. 'Fun' is a factor for success in the cultural contents industry. Through the design process, it is possible to apply fun elements to the design of cultural contents to meet the purpose. The characteristics of Hangul icons that can be used in cultural contents design, the concept of 'fun', the inducing factors of fun and the production methods of visual fun are summarized. The production method of visual fun has suggested the same way as the design humor creation method in visual communication design. 10 types of examples of Hangul in relation to visual 'fun' have been analyzed by the semiotic approach. This suggests a design methodology for the creation of fun elements that utilize Hangul Iconicity in cultural contents design in the future.

  • There are lots of tries to make a combination between the technology development which is fast arisen and cultural phenomenon which imply in it. We called this research area as the cultural computing or cultural modeling. In this paper, we examine the cultural user interface design, especially cultural design structure based on the contents considering the research trend of the cultural modeling. To design of the contents based on the culture, there is a need to draw a structure of the cultural feature for the contents. To do this, we combine Hofstede's cultural dimensions model with the data of contents and then we suggest cultural index of content(CiCo). Furthermore, we draw national index of cultural content(NiCC), through conjoining CiCo with preference pattern of content consumption for the nations. Suggested CiCo and NiCC are based on Hofstede's model, however they are improved approximately 10% of the explanatory of model than the Hofstede's.

  • There have been diverse discourses arguing that new design has been emerging in the 21 st century. However, there have been very few trials to identify systematically the characteristics_of new design paradigm and to develop new design educational program based on them. Thus, this paper aims at development of strategy of new design educational program according to the characteristics of new design paradigm. At first, design is viewed as part of 'culture'and the structure of culture is identified: 'Artifact', 'Value', and 'Basic Assumptions'. Similarly, design is found to comprise of three fundamental attributes: 'Function', 'Aesthetics','Symbolic'. These levels are shown to be in the relation of mutually recycling influences. These structural framework is used to understand the design methods and qualification of designers over the development of design paradigms: vernacular design, machine age, and information-knowledge age. The result leads the list of requirements of new educational design program: 'Human-Centered','Situation-Based','User-Participatory', and 'Intangible'. The model of strategy of new educational design program is developed and proposed.

  • The research object is Huayan Street, which is located in Datong City of Shanxi Province in Northern China. And it's detailedly seated to the east of the Huayan Temple. This street is a multicultural area which covers religious and business culture, along with other kinds of civilization since ancient time. The purpose of this research is to restore the historical and cultural tradition, improving the economic development. This research will use the theory of narrative to analyze the public design of Huayan Street. It's present the new design concept to reflect the cultural story of this region. First of all, the cultural stories of Huayan Street were explored and collected by introducing the history. Secondly, the drawbacks of public design of this street were found out by analyzing the current situation in Huayan Street At the end of this paper, a design solution was proposed according to the history and culture with story-telling methods from narratology which depart the street into four scenes opening, developing, changing and concluding. The innovation point of this research is apply humanism into the public design of Huayan Street and rebuild the image of Huayan Street.

  • 본 연구는 저자가 2005년 평택시 문화상품 개발과정에 연구위원으로 참여하여 지역의 대표성을 가지는 디자인 고찰 과정을 살펴본 것이다. 연구목적은 고유문화재와 전통성을 바탕으로 한 상품 개발을 통한 인식 변화를 가져오는 것이다. 그리고 평택시의 문화성립 및 자긍심 고양 및 지역 위상을 확립하는 것이다. 또한, 국 내외 관광객 유치 및 지역 문화 알리기의 기반 마련하는 것이다. 이를 바탕으로 대표적 문화 상품의 개발을 통하여 도시 이미지 확산을 고려하는 것이다. 구체적으로는 평택농악(전통악기, 뱃지, 키홀더등), 문구사무용품(서류함, 책갈피, 시계, 키홀더), 생활용품 (컵받침, 탁상용 저금통, 북, 명함), 장식용품(주방용품등 문화관련 상품들을 개발) 등으로 세분화하여 조사 하였다. 연구 개발 과정을 통하여 도시브랜드 디자인 개발사례로 디자인 적용안을 도출하였다. 그 결과 지역의 도시브랜드 확립을 위한 결론이 선행되어야 한다는 아홉가지 결론을 구체화 할 수 있었다.
