  • This study investigates the actual wearing conditions of functional mountaineering garments in Korea and provides suggestions on the development of more effective functional mountaineering garments through the examination of consumer data. This survey was based on 107 respondents who enjoy mountaineering and was composed of 5 sections consisting of personal information, purchasing habits, essential features for mountaineering garments, satisfaction levels based on features and functions, and additional comments on the improvement of mountaineering garments. Respondents said that essential features for mountaineering garments are quick absorbing/drying, insulation, water and wind proof, and elasticity. These properties become more effective when users wear mountaineering garments in layers. They want lower prices and easy to wash garments. Therefore, it is necessary to consider not only the main functions, but also the needs of consumers for easy washing and price.

  • An increasing number of mountaineers are recently creating diverse consumer needs for mountaineering garments, thereby leading to a production of smart mountaineering garments with diverse-functions. Smart mountaineering garments are increasingly adding to comfort and safety, boosting their market size. This study researched on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to examine factors that influence the intention of consumers to purchase buy mountaineering garments. For that purpose, 641 people aged 20-61 years who experienced in mountaineering were surveyed online. An extended TAM was designed by adding new variables such as fashion involvement and garment involvement associated with the characteristics of clothing products to the variables such as self-efficacy sense, technological innovativeness, perceived enjoyment. The findings of the study suggested that self-efficacy sense influenced perceived usefulness, perceived easiness of use, and perceived enjoyment, while garment involvement and fashion involvement influenced the perceived easiness of use and the perceived usefulness, respectively. Also, the perceived easiness of use influenced perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment, while the perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment directly influenced the intention of purchase. Based on the findings of this research, this study seeks to determine factors variables of smart garments purchase intention, and to explore measures to enhance such purchase intention, thereby offering working implications for developing smart mountaineering garments.

  • This study investigated 1) the effects of mountain climbing motivation on the desired mountain climbing wear benefits, and 2) the desired effects of mountain climbing wear benefits on clothing usage behavior. Data were collected via a questionnaire administered to 498 consumers who make at least one mountain climbing wear purchase for personal use. All items were evaluated on a 5-point Likert scale, and SPSS 20.0 and Amos 7.0 were used for data analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis for the research variables were performed and three factors of mountain climbing motivation (social interaction, health improvement, and mental rejuvenation), four factors of mountain climbing wear benefits sought (ostentation, ideal healthy figure, conformity, and functions), and two factors regarding clothing usage behavior (sportswear usage and daily wear usage) were identified. The results from the model test were as follows: 1) Mountain climbing motivation was found to vary depending on the mountain climbing wear benefits sought. Social interaction had a positive effect on all 4 factors of mountain climbing wear benefits sought. Health improvement was the only motivating factor for consumers who sought the benefit of functions; however, the functions benefit was not found to be a consideration for consumers who climbed for mental rejuvenation. 2) Mountain climbing wear usage was affected by mountain climbing wear benefits sought. The benefits for conformity and functions had a positive effect on sportswear usage and daily wear usage; however, the ideal healthy figure only affected daily wear usage. The twofold usage of mountain climbing wear reflects a cultural trend toward the usage of mountain climbing wear as daily wear; however, consumers show this twofold usage to conform successfully to mainstream society and not to pursue the ideal healthy figure.

  • With the trend of wearing mountaineering wear as casual apparel as well as a continuous increase of mountaineers, mountaineering wear market has rapidly grown. New techniques to improve mountaineering apparel have been developed. Construction Without Sewing(CWS) is one of them. It is a sewing technique to improve performance and functions of new functional mountaineering apparel. CWS employs a welding machine with an adhesive tape and press instead of sewing so that it makes the apparel lighter and have better wearability, durability, and windproof and waterproof function, than sewed apparel. This study focuses on the concept, nature, and applications of the mountaineering wear manufactured by CWS. It also made an analysis of manufacturing process, and proposed three designs for the mountaineering wear created by CWS. With introducing the merits of CWS, the costumers will be have better understanding of CWS and break their stereotype that functional clothing is simply expensive without considering its benefits.

  • This study investigates the effects of fashion innovativeness and utilization on the price perception of formal wear and climbing wear as well as gender differences on price perception and the relationship of the variables. Price perception measurements were based on reference price and reservation price; subsequently, a premium price ratio was calculated based on the measured prices. A survey that involved male and female adult consumers was conducted in Daegu in August 2011. A total of 321 responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics, factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlations and independent sample t-test. Two factors of fashion innovativeness were derived and named as unique-oriented innovativeness and change-oriented innovativeness. The utilization of formal wear and climbing wear was higher in the male group versus the female group. Reference price and reservation price were identified similar to the actual consumer purchasing prices reported in previous studies. Male consumers showed a tendency in price perception in accordance with the utilization. The change-oriented innovativeness of the female group led to a positive relationship with the perceived price of climbing jackets.
