The purpose of this study is to analyze the trail deterioration conditions and to obtain the informations for the desirable maintenance and restoration of the trails in Woraksan National Park. To accomplish the purpose, not only trail condition such as altitude, entire width, bare width, maximum depth and slope of trail, but also deterioration types of trail were surveyed at the total 111 points for 13.5km in length on the four access trails to Yeongbong which is the main peak of Woraksan. Furthermore, impact rating class, which could be effective means to check the step and extent of deterioration process, was judged on each points of trail. Results informs us that the deterioration condition of the trail in Woraksan National Park is not reached the lev- el of grave concern yet, but the active counterplan to change over from the safety-centric facility station to the integrated and organized restoration aiming to natural environment conservation is urgently needed.
To investigate the heart rate changes under the influence of physical conditions on mountain trails, heart rates of 3 subjects were recorded on 9 routes in Kyeryongsan National Park and Odaesan National Park. Maximal heart rate during uphill walking recorded between 84% and 96% to individual maximal heart rate using ergometer, thus uphill walking on mountain trail was an exhaustive exercise. The ratio of maximal heart rate during downhill walking indicated between 78% and 93% to maximal heart rate during uphill walking. And gradient of trail influenced on heart rate, but width of trail didn't. The heart rate on wooden- or stony-step-trail were rapidly increased in comparison with the heart rates on soil-trails.
To survey trail damage and vegetational change around trail at Bukhan Mountain National Park in Korea, field survey was executed over Bukhan mountain district during August, 1987. Trail damage was surveyed for he section of 7.18km from Ui valley to Jeongnung valley in which user's density was high. Ground vegetation was surveyed with a belt-transect method from trail edge to forest and edge species were surveyed with a belt method along trail edge. Interrelation between trail damage and user's density was not dear. Damage class II of trail showed 23.9% of the surveyed section and class III showed 8.0% and class II and III of natural trail showed 19.7% and those of facilitated trail showed 12.3%. The length of damage class II and III requiring readjustment were estimated as 3.65 km and 1.22km from the main trail course of 15.3km at Bukhan mountain district. In case of no intervention to forest by users, vegetational change around trails was appeared up to 6-8 m from trailside. But in case of intervention to forest by users, vegetational change was not coincident with the change of soil hardness and was diverse locally. Quercus mongolica, Lespedeza cyrtobotrya and Rbo-dodendron mucronulatum were appeared as Raunkiaer frequency class E, and Weigela subsessilis. Lespedeza maximowiczii, Rhododendron schlippenbachii and Sorbus alnifolid were appeared as class D at trail edge of ridge-Quercus mongolica was appeared as class E and Rhododenderon mucrounulatium. Stephanandra incisa were appeared as class D at trail edge of midslope. Rhododenron mucronulatum. Lespedeza maximowiczii and Stepanandra incisa were appeared as class D at trail edge of valley. Lespedeza cyrtobotrya. Lespedeza maximowiczii and Stephanandra incisa were appeared as class D at trail edge of valley beside motorway.
This study was conducted to investigate user, use characteristics and use pattern of Soknisan national park. In this study, the questionaire was used which was included the questions on socioeconomic variables of users, visiting motivations, attitudes on management and services, and so on. And to count the passingers, 9 observation points were selected. Visitor's important motivations were to escape from crowded city, to escape from daily routine, to enjoy natural seeing beauty, and so on. Their main activities were temple visit, stroll and mountain climbing. The visitor's composition showed that high school or more graduated twenties were respectively dominant. Perceived crowding level in this park were relatively high and most crowded area was Bupjusa area. Visitors had unsatisfactory attitudes on management and services as like trail, facilities, educational environment and others related services. Accordingly satisfaction level was comparatively low. A major portion of visitors merely visited Bupjusa area, only 15% and less climbed as far as top of mountain.
This study applied the normative approach to establish evaluative standards for the facilities in Moodeung-san Provincial Park. Based on the established evaluative standards, this study examined the present facility managerial conditions of the park, and suggested some management alternatives to solve the identified problems. Data were collected by on-site survey and a mail-back questionnaire during August of 1996 in Moodeung-san Provincial Park. Out of 1,173, 519 respondents (44.2%) were used for the analysis. According to the results, three indicators out of five established indicators except 'adequacy of garbage cans' and 'adequacy of trail-guidance facilities' were in worse conditions than the established evaluative standards. The three indicators were 1) adequacy of toilets, 2) cleanness of toilets, 3) waiting time for using public transportations. The present condition for 'adequacy of trail-guidance facilities' was the same with the evaluative standard. This study suggested some management strategies to improve these problematic conditions, and introduced how managers may use these information for the facility management of the park.
The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for developing the effective park management. For this, satisfaction factors and estimated model by satisfaction variables of visitors analyzed through a questionnaire survey in Weolchulsan National Park, Korea. In the evaluation of the satisfaction, variables of 'lack of visit program' was most unsatisfied, and 'lack of facility', 'charge of fee', 'lack of pamphlet & information facility' were more unsatisfied than any other variables. Satisfaction factors by Factor Analysis were loaded with 'facility management', 'usual management'. In estimated model of satisfaction by Multiple Regression Analysis showed in order of 'negative impacts of trail', 'lack of safety facility'.
In order to examine the rates and factors of path widening in Mount Halla, the retreat of path sidewalls was monitored at 32 sites of Seongpanak Hiking Trail located between 875 m and 1,400 m in elevation. The mean rate of sidewall retreat for the period 2002-2008 is 50.6 mm, equivalent to 10.0 mm/yr. The retreat rate of frozen period is 19.3 mm/yr, while the rate of unfrozen period is 4.3 mm/yr. The latter is divided into the rainy and dry periods that exhibit the retreat rates of 5.9 mm/yr and 2.9 mm/yr, respectively. The retreat rate of sidewalls is also varied with seasons; winter shows the maximum rate of 42.2 mm/yr, while summer exhibits the minimum rate of 1.3 mm/yr. Spring and fall show the intermediate rates of 13.9 mm/yr and 6.4 mm/yr, respectively. Soil hardness and elevation are not closely related to the retreat rate of sidewalls, even though the retreat rate is larger at the north-faced sidewalls than the south-faced sidewalls during the frozen period. Pipkrake is likely to be the most important factor contributing to the path widening in that the retreat of winter months accounts for 76.7% of the total retreat. The hiking trail is placed under the climatic conditions which develop pipkrake in 85 days annually. In addition, it is usual to observe the path sidewall covered with pipkrake in the freezing month of December and the thawing months of March and April. On the other hand, deflation and rainsplash erosion are not important due to the weak wind speed and the forested trail. Rainwash is also insignificant in that the path has been almost paved to mitigate trampling effects. Although biological activity is not dominant, hikers cause a large retreat of sidewalls in the thawing months since they would walk on the sidewalls to avoid snow-melting pools on the path.

For the purpose of data construction for the systematic management and sight-seeing guidance of the natural park, the Kumoh Mt. Province Park was selected as a pilot area. Digital topographic maps, thematic maps and satellite imagery covering the object area were processed and then landform analysis for elevation, slope, aspect and so on was conducted through DEM generation, and the landcover map and NDVI maP were extracted from Landsat TM data. The database was then constructed with these spatial data for GSIS. The image map was generated from IKONOS satellite data, which cover the pilot area data, with one meter resolution and also 3D visualization which was overlaid with main paths up a mountain were conducted. And the moving image files were produced along main paths up including main natural spectacular sights, cultural assets and management facilities. It is expected that the research result can be utilized as the fundamental data for re-assessing suitable land use and constructing Web-based guidance system.
